  Kooyong’s Haven Pinot Noir is a great Pinot Noir and exceptional with a few years of age – this 2011 is singing right now.

  Almost indistinguishable from a Premier Cru Vosne Romanée, this gradually uncurls with swirling to reveal focused spicy, smokey, gamey aromas, permeate in the mouth with hints of anise and heather over succulent black cherry fruit. Well-structured, with richness and a warm, enveloping texture.

  Planted exclusively to Pinot Noir, the Haven Vineyard is the most sheltered site, being bordered by trees on both the North and South, hence the vineyard name.  The soil is loam over clay, with less sand than Meres and fewer sandstone pebbles than Ferrous.

  2005 Shiraz ‘Savitar’, Mitolo

  Savitar, the flagship Mitolo Shiraz, is a tightly structured wine produced in very limited quantities. Powerful yet elegant Savitar is opulent, brooding and intense.

  The wine name ‘Savitar’ refers to a mythical dragon-like monster.  The fruit for Mitolo Savitar Shiraz comes from the Lopresti vineyards Chinese Block, which is located in the Willunga district at the southern end of McLaren Vale. Savitar Shiraz is sourced from a particularly unforgiving, skeletal soil patch in the North-Eastern corner of the block, where the vines are pushed hard to create very low yields of outstanding depth of flavour and quality.

  In the glass this outstanding Shiraz has a rockstar level aromas with a mocha top note followed by liquorice, spice and vanilla finishing with a blackberry end note. Mouthfilling palate, great concentration of flavours – strong black pepper and spice palate flavours, with white pepper rolling out on the back palate. Fine grained perfectly balanced tannins. Very long aftertaste of liquorice, blackberry and vanilla.

  2018 Rifle Range Cabernet Sauvignon, Rockford

  The nose on this elegant cabernet is generous, rich and ripe with plenty of classic blackcurrant fruit with cocoa and tobacco notes. The palate is fresh and herbal with thyme notes that lift the concentrated black fruit. Smooth, silky tannins and a wonderful freshness on the finish.

  Rifle Range Road which runs parallel to Krondorf Road, is in the heart of the Valley Floor and winds its way up the hills to Kaiser Stuhl National Park. The old rifle range is long gone, but the farming land and vineyards that have long been part of the landscape are still there.  “Because most of our Cabernet Sauvignon comes from vineyards adjacent to Rifle Range Road, it seemed the most appropriate name for this wine which has been part of Rockford since the very beginning.”

  2018 was the kind of vintage winemakers look forward to. They were able to pick some parcels early and some later across a three-week period, ensuring a complex, naturally balanced wine that will reward cellaring for a further 6-8 years and we suspect much longer for those able to resist!

  2012 Hanlin Hill Riesling, Petaluma – Magnum

  This is rightly regarded as one of Australia’s great Rieslings and this 2012 vintage in magnum is a perfectly aged example of this magnificent Riesling

  In the glass, the nose displays aromas of lemon and lime followed by some orange rind and minerals. Possessing excellent intensity the palate is filled with mineral-infused lemon and lime flavours followed by some orange rind with a crisp minerally finish. Excellent length with long lime, citrus and mineral aftertaste.

  The Hanlin Hill vineyard was planted in 1968 (by Len Evans) on a west-facing slope on the eastern edge of the Clare Valley at a relatively high altitude of 550m.

  2013 Voices of Angels Shiraz, Charles Melton Wines

  This 2013 single vineyard Shiraz from the legendary Charles Melton is sweetly perfumed with just a hint of whole bunch character. Great density in the bouquet. Not wildly fruity, just intensely perfumed rounded sweet, almost Burgundian palate. Rich and round right to the edges. Spicy complexity in the mouth feel and firm tannins to finish. Enough complexity and weight to see out a decade or two at least.

  This wine is sourced from the Mount Pleasant vineyard which sits on the boundary of Eden Valley and the Adelaide Hills. Technically, this wine is from the Adelaide Hills, but spiritually the fruit is Eden Valley.

  The Paringa Chardonnay is the estates top chardonnay wine and a single vineyard wine.

  The bouquet has a complex floral lift of citrus and stone fruit, with some delicate lees aromas. Cool climate white fleshy stone fruits, citrus notes and savoury nutty oak flavours characterise the palate. This Chardonnay has a round, textured palate harmoniously balanced by a fine natural acidity that leads to a long, persistent finish.

  The name ‘The Paringa’ denotes the single-vineyard origin of this wine. Lindsay McCall planted the first vines on the Paringa Estate vineyard in 1985, with ten acres being under vine by 1990. From this site fruit of distinction is born from a combination of red volcanic (Ferrasol) soil, a north-facing aspect and altitude of 146m on Paringa Road, Red Hill South. In creating this wine viticulture and winemaking practices are approached with the intent of preserving a pure expression of the site from the soil through to bottle.

  2017 The Old Bloke and The Three Young Blonds, d’Arenberg

  A mix of gnarly, old Shiraz partnered with youthful, exotic and fragrant white varieties. The Shiraz offers a nose brimming with dark, earthen fruits, woody spices and rich blackberry aromas. Viognier adds fragrance in the form of apricot, ginger and florals, Roussanne delivers an exotic, dried almond and papaya note, and the Marsanne contributes pistachio and yellow stonefruit.

  The palate is generous, with layers of fruit characters that ebb and flow through the entire length. The tannin structure is unique, thanks to the mingling of red and white phenolics. The rustic, chunky, mid-palate Shiraz tannins are tempered by the lusciousness of the white varieties, the finish enhanced by the addition of fragrant, flowery tannins, mainly on account of the Viognier and more nutty, walnut skin texture, from the Roussanne.

  A complex and alluring wine that evolves in the glass. So much individual character and much to take in, but somehow we are left with a sense of harmony between the old bloke and the three young blondes.

  2002 Charles Melton Sparkling Red, Charles Melton

  Charlie Melton uses the traditional Australian technique for their sparkling red, as pioneered by Seppelts at Great Western. The base wine is aged for around two years or so in oak and then tirage bottled and left on lees for up to four years. This gives a complex aromatic of fruit sweetness and classic autolysis character and fine bubble. An important factor is the liquering dosage as this degree of sweetness ensures they will develop for decades.

  This 2002 Sparkling red was disgorged in August 2005 so has had a further 16 years in bottle.   It is an incredible bottle of wine and still has decades to go!   Rich black cherry and plum on the nose with a delightful charry element. It has a fine mousse with powerful red and black fruits. Spicy, dense with a beguiling sweetness. It has a tight, dense core of rich fruit. Off-dry and has fabulous intensity and complexity.  Fabulous!

  Charles Melton Wines has produced premium Barossa red wines since 1984. Charlie and a small band of Barossa winemakers turned their winemaking efforts to what was then considered a couple of unfashionable varieties: Shiraz and Grenache. These wines were initially styled on those from the Rhône but are now considered leading examples of the varieties in their own right. The wines have always attracted national and international recognition, and an enduring commitment to dry-farmed vineyards and careful crafting of the wine will ensure that this continues.

  This phenomenal wine was made from dry farmed old vine Shiraz, has a very deep colour with a toasty nose – some high-quality oak lifting the bouquet. A hint of sweet plums, strawberries poking through. Good firm tannins but with sufficient middle palate weight to match. The spiciness shows through onto the palate with a food-friendly savouriness being knit together with the traditional Barossa richness and sweet fruit finish.

  The 2002 Shiraz from Standish Vineyard is a remarkable wine with a rich history and a complex profile. The grapes were sourced from 89-year-old vines, which is quite significant as older vines tend to produce fruit with more concentrated flavours. This Shiraz spent 30 months aging in French barriques (barrels), specifically ones that were 3-5 years old. This aging process contributes to the complexity and depth of the wine’s flavour. It has a very deep garnet colour, indicating its maturity and concentration. The wine offers intense aromas of dried plum and warm blackberries, layered with notes of dusty earth, menthol, coffee, tree bark, black truffle, tobacco, and liquorice. This combination of aromas suggests a rich and savoury character with a balance of fruit and earthy elements.
