Paringa Estate

2015 The Paringa Chardonnay, Paringa Estate

Mornington Peninsula, AustraliaVintage: 2015

The Paringa Chardonnay is the estates top chardonnay wine and a single vineyard wine.

The bouquet has a complex floral lift of citrus and stone fruit, with some delicate lees aromas. Cool climate white fleshy stone fruits, citrus notes and savoury nutty oak flavours characterise the palate. This Chardonnay has a round, textured palate harmoniously balanced by a fine natural acidity that leads to a long, persistent finish.

The name ‘The Paringa’ denotes the single-vineyard origin of this wine. Lindsay McCall planted the first vines on the Paringa Estate vineyard in 1985, with ten acres being under vine by 1990. From this site fruit of distinction is born from a combination of red volcanic (Ferrasol) soil, a north-facing aspect and altitude of 146m on Paringa Road, Red Hill South. In creating this wine viticulture and winemaking practices are approached with the intent of preserving a pure expression of the site from the soil through to bottle.

Description

Paringa Estate was founded in 1984 by Lindsay McCall when he purchased a derelict orchard in 1984 on Paringa Road, Red Hill South. Lindsay continued his day job of teaching while he set about planting the first vines in 1985 – the first vintage was in 1988 and was just a mere 3 tonnes. In 1996, Lindsay gave up teaching to focus entirely on Paringa Estate and making great wines. Twenty-five years on the production is now 200 tonnes and Paringa Estate is one of the most highly awarded wineries in Australia regularly winning gold trophies for their Shiraz, Pinot Noirs and Chardonnay.

The hand-picked fruit was whole bunch pressed and the unclarified juice was fermented in new, one and two-year-old French oak barriques. The wine was matured for 11 months, during which time it was stirred monthly, to build weight and complexity while retaining the freshness of the fruit.
