  Laroche is a famous name in Chablis, with family history dating as far back as 1695. Michel Laroche is the patriarch of the family and after decades as the director of Domaine Laroche he decided in 2010 to sell his stake in this business, keeping the historic vineyards that he had inherited, and created a family domaine with his children Margaux and Romain and his wife Cécile, that would be called Le Domaine d’Henri, in homage to his father.

  The Chablis region is renowned for its Kimmeridgian marl, a limestone-rich clay formed over 160 million years ago from fossilized marine deposits. This unique soil imparts a distinct minerality and sharp edge to Chablis wines.

  The wine expresses flint, herbal notes and citrus in the nose, classic traits of Chablis. Bright crisp acidity provides tension and backbone to the ripe flavors of melon, pear and almonds. Wonderfully versatile with food, this wine is as serious or playful as you would like.

  Domaine des Deux Roches translates as ‘Estate of the Two Rocks’, a reference to the position of this wine estate between the two distinctive, rocky escarpments of Solutre and Vergisson, in the Maconnais area of southern Burgundy. Owners of the Domaine, Jean-Luc Terrier and Christian Collovray make this great Saint-Veran, a white that beats many Burgundies for sheer deliciousness.

  Terres Noires is a single vineyard on the south side of the landmark rock of Solutré, where limestone soils mix with black decomposed rock. One-third of this Chardonnay is matured in oak barrels for four months and it is this careful use of oak that is key to the style. It has a lovely forward and expressive peachy fruit style. A medium oaked chardonnay with lemon and butter and a touch of honeysuckle on the nose. Soft and creamy with plenty of body and texture.

  The Hautes Côte de Nuits vineyards run parallel to those of the Côte de Nuits but are situated at a higher altitude. This wine comes from 1.05ha of organically certified Chardonnay vines. They are 35 years old on average and are planted at a density of 3,500 vines per hectare. The vineyard is east-facing and planted on limestone soil, which gives the resulting wine great freshness and fine minerality.

Intense yet elegant aromas of melon and candied fruit are complemented by stone fruit and floral notes, with a delicate mixture of brioche, honey and flint.   Hawke’s Bay’s Gimblett Gravels winegrowing district lies on the ancient bed of the Ngaruroro River, which changed course in 1867 to expose the soils for possible viticulture. The relatively low altitude and proximity to the sea yet sheltered from the direct effect of the sea breeze, creates a temperate maritime climate. This location, altitude, and the stony soil’s warming influence make it the warmest site in Hawke’s Bay. The lack of excessive heat in the Gimblett Gravels is also a critical factor as it means the aromatic characters in the fruit, which contribute to the floral notes, are retained. The soils are composed of small to medium-sized greywacke stones interspersed with layers of silt and sand down to a depth of at least 40 metres. The stones on the surface absorb sunlight and heat during the day and then radiate heat at night, enhancing the vine’s ripening capacity. The stony soil structure allows for very rapid drainage after rainfall events; the low water-holding ability the vine’s growth to be controlled. The soils in this locality produce rich, ripe, yet elegantly structured red wines with a distinctive mineral, hot stone and fine dusty character, affectionately known as ‘Gimblett Dust’.

  Te Kahu means ‘the cloak’ in Maori and refers to the mist that envelops Giants Winery in the Tukituki Valley. Legend has it that this mist was used to protect a mythical Maori maiden from the sun as she visited her lover Te Mata.

  This white wine is made from the dark-skinned red variety Nerello Mascalese.

  The grapes for this wine come from a 15 hectare vineyard is situated in the Contrada Feudo S. The vines are grown in volcanic soils, which are rich in minerals and fossils. The climate is Mediterranean, strongly influenced by cooling coastal breezes combined with mountain freshness from the foothills of the Pyrenees which balance the hot, arid summers. The soils are made up of alluvial marls of the Roussillon plain, along with black schist; the latter imparts great aromatic complexity to the wines, characterised by freshness and notes of the garrigue. The vineyard is certified organic.
