White WineDomaine Jean Goulley is well regarded for their mineral style of Chablis’s that have a purity and vivacity that pays homage to the Chablis of the past. 2019 is being hailed as an excellent vintage in Burgundy, with Chablis being no exception. The grapes were harvested at optimum maturity and were fermented with natural yeast in temperature-controlled vats using organic principles. Philippe believes in highlighting terroir, and he produces his wines in an unoaked style, allowing them to reveal the purity, minerality and vitality of the soil.
In the glass, this 2019 Chablis is pure, lively and full of minerality showcasing the Goulley style. Starting with clean, pronounced greengage aromas and a steely mineral, saline character. A classic Chablis with a mouthwateringly razor sharp finish.
This Chablis-style single-vineyard, limited-release, unoaked Chardonnay has been fermented and aged for eleven months in a concrete egg. The shape of the vessel causes the yeast to be in a constant state of flux, giving the wine richness and complexity, without any wood flavour to mask the fruit character. Concentrated baked yellow apple, peach, dried apricots and graphite with hints of almond and spices on the nose. In the mouth, it is full-bodied with a complex depth of flavour. Highly layered with a persistent, creamy, spiced apricot finish. The bottles are sealed with vegan wax.

White WineDomaine des Deux Roches translates as ‘Estate of the Two Rocks’, a reference to the position of this wine estate between the two distinctive, rocky escarpments of Solutre and Vergisson, in the Maconnais area of southern Burgundy. Owners of the Domaine, Jean-Luc Terrier and Christian Collovray make this great Saint-Veran, a white that beats many Burgundies for sheer deliciousness.
Terres Noires is a single vineyard on the south side of the landmark rock of Solutré, where limestone soils mix with black decomposed rock. One-third of this Chardonnay is matured in oak barrels for four months and it is this careful use of oak that is key to the style. It has a lovely forward and expressive peachy fruit style. A medium oaked chardonnay with lemon and butter and a touch of honeysuckle on the nose. Soft and creamy with plenty of body and texture.

The vines are grown in the heart of the Chablis appellation, where the climate is continental. Cold winters allow the vine to rest and the sap to descend and warm summers, enable the grapes to ripen. The yields are carefully controlled to ensure the highest quality of fruit, by concentrating the flavours in the grapes. The vineyards are cultivated in the traditional manner in accordance with the appellation regulations, but also in order to respect the land and its environment and the biodiversity of the soil. The soils are predominantly Kimmeridgian, which comprise limestone and clay, from which the wines of Chablis draw their unique character, purity and minerality.
Piemonte produces some of the finest, most Burgundian, examples of Chardonnay in Italy. This is one of the best – a complex barrel-aged style, and one of Italy’s finest examples of the grape. The Chardonnay grapes are sourced from two parcels of vines. One is in Barbaresco, just below Martinenga, facing south-west at an altitude of 230m. The second is on the north-east side of Monte Aribaldo in the commune of Treiso, 370 metres above sea level.
Ripe, honeyed style with intense hazelnut, nougat, caramel and butter on the nose. A generous silky textured mouth feel is nuanced and savoury with fine citrus and stone fruit characters and taut acidity. Layered and complex with subtle use of oak giving an elegant style with notable minerality. Perfectly balanced, with considerable length.
White WineIn the glass, the Organic Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Nuits is straw yellow with white highlights. It has very intense bouquet perfumes with notes of citrus zest, green apple and toasty aromas of fresh brioche. The palate has excellent tension with concentrated fruit flavours that linger on the finish.
The Hautes Côte de Nuits vineyards run parallel to those of the Côte de Nuits but are situated at a higher altitude. This wine comes from 1.05ha of organically certified Chardonnay vines. They are 35 years old on average and are planted at a density of 3,500 vines per hectare. The vineyard is east-facing and planted on limestone soil, which gives the resulting wine great freshness and fine minerality.
White WineA complex and layered single vineyard Chardonnay from Waihopai Valley in Marlborough, made by the Blank Canvas duo Matt Thomson and Sophie Parker Thomson. It shows fleshy white nectarine and orchard fruit, alongside a flint-focussed precision on the palate, with a grainy and honeyed richness. It shows crystalline purity, with powerful savoury oak, and layered complexity.
The Reed vineyard is home to growers Pete and Anne Reed. Situated at the mouth of the Waihopai Valley, they first planted vines on their land in 2001. The soil is low-vigour clay, with a naturally dry micro-climate. The vineyard is planted solely with Clone 95 Chardonnay, a Burgundian clone that Matt Thomson thinks is ideally suited to Marlborough. It is flavour ripe at modest sugar levels, and retains its acid, a balance that Matt likes.
Lismore Estate is based in Greyton within the Overberg region of the Western Cape of South Africa. It’s here with the Sonderend mountains as a backdrop that winemaker & proprietor Samantha O’Keefe makes her fabulous wines. ‘ I had a farm in Africa….’ The opening line of Karen Blixen’s classic memoir Out Of Africa comes to mind when you hear Samantha’s amazing story. A native Californian, Berkeley educated, Sam realised her dream and bought a mountain in Africa.
In December 2019 Samantha’s farm, home, cellar and just-opened wine cellar was all lost in a bush-fire. Samantha has proven herself to be one of the winemaking stars of South Africa and gaining respect from all around the world. The day this tragedy took place Samantha was receiving calls from winemakers all around the Cape, giving her some of their top grapes and asking her to make the wine in their cellars in order for her to continue making wine and not miss a harvest. A remarkable woman making remarkable wines.
The 2020 Lismore Chardonnay is delicious in the glass. The nose is a complex, expressive bouquet of citrus and tropical fruits layered with brioche, honey and walnut. The palate is carried through by a distinct minerality and crisp acidity through to a lingering citrus finish.

The Chardonnay grapes come from the Côtes Catalans, which is the principle IGP allowing only mono-varietal wines. The vines thrive at an altitude of 385 metres’ elevation in the Haute Vallée de l’Agly, in the Roussillon region. The climate is Mediterranean, strongly influenced by cooling coastal breezes combined with mountain-freshness from the foothills of the Pyrenees which balance the hot, arid summers. The terroir is made up of a mosaic of black schist soils, which date back to the Cretaceous period. The schistous marl produces shallow soils, which force the vines to send their roots deep in search of water and nutrients. The vineyard is certified
organic.
White WineA full-flavoured and complex Premier Cru Chablis, delivering rich, ripe fruit enveloped in a creamy texture through to a long, sustained finish.
Mont de Milieu is a 1er Cru vineyard site located on the eastern banks of the Serein River and produces age-worthy wines from this exceptional terroir. The vines are planted in Kimmeridgian soils, which are rich in clay and limestone with fossilised seashells. Domaine Goulley’s old Chardonnay vines were planted in 1968 and were converted to organic status in 2005, since then it has been cultivated without the use of chemical treatments.
The vineyard has a south to southwestern exposure and sits at 150 to 190 metres elevation which encourages good diurnal temperature differences, encouraging the grapes to accumulate good fruit concentration while retaining refreshing natural acidity from the cooler nights.
White WineIn the glass the wine has mineral aromatics with background savoury flinty notes. The fruit is in the fresh white pear spectrum with perhaps some citric elements. The palate is vibrant and light. The old vine depth of fruit provides a complexity not seen in most Chardonnay – there is always more to find in the wine without it being overworked or over-blown. This is a beautiful wine with depth of flavour and texture that will stand up in a fine dining situation.
White WineThe 2020 Montmains has an intense mineral nose followed by fresh vibrant fruit, crisp acidity and citrus notes. Beautifully balanced, this is pure and round on the palate, with a creamy texture and a long, salivating finish. Classic Chablis.
The 1er Cru of Montmains is one of the best known Premier Cru vineyards and stretches along an exposed hillside to the southwest of the town of Chablis. It is angled slightly east toward the morning sun, the slopes of the vineyard have enough sunshine to ripen grapes, while still retaining the fresh acidity that is so important to Chablis wines. Montmains is known for producing fresh, elegant wines with good minerality.
