Cape of Good Hope

2015 Serruria Chardonnay, Cape of Good Hope

Elandskloof, Western Cape, South AfricaVintage: 2015

In the glass aromas of orange blossom and spice fill the nose. It is fresh, lively and zippy in the mouth with ample orange and citrus flavour cloaked with creamy vanilla oak. The flavours grow like a peacock fantail, starting off quite reserved and then revealing more depth and richness. There is a lovely harmonious integration of oak and fruit. Long and yet light and bright.

The grapes for this wine are harvested from the Altima vineyard, situated in Elandskloof, an isolated valley north of Villiersdorp which is 5km wide and is surrounded by a steep mountain range that rises 1km from the valley floor. The steep topography causes the valley to receive less direct sunlight due to the overshadowing mountains, which together with the elevation of 600 to 900m equates to a very cool climate for the valley. is unique terroir produces wines with high natural acidity and upfront aromas. Grapes are harvested much later than other sites in the Western Cape, with harvest usually starting in late February/early March.

Description

In 2006, Johann Rupert initiated the search for all vineyards in South Africa older than 35 years. Traditionally the South African wine industry depended on tonnage, meaning that the meager yields of older vines dictated them to be removed. What was left was some pretty spectacular pockets of vines tended by people who either kept them out of sentiment or foresight. Old vine wine guaranteeing intensity, texture and a real sense of place. Johann Rupert passionately believes preserving them then is an act of social responsibility toward South African wine and the people who invested in them despite the odds.

From this the Cape of Good Hope was born, with the vineyards selected for the range representing exceptional vineyard sites and some of the oldest vines in the country, lovingly tended to produce only the finest reflection of their terroir. These vines are a reflection of a countrywide search that was to spark a worldwide old vine movement.
