Heinrich

2016 Zweigelt, Heinrich

Burgenland, AustriaVintage: 2016

If you’re a lover of Beaujolais or Valpolicella then this Austrian Red made from 100% Zweigelt could be the one for you.   In the UK we drink very little Austrian red wines and the Wine Republic team are guilty of that as well BUT we we do we are always pleasantly surprised by how good they can be, and this Zweigelt from Heinrich is one of those wines.

The vines of 2016 bequeathed grapes with extraordinary finesse.  In the glass you will find a dance of cherry aromas from morello to wild.  On the palate the tannins are fine but catchy. Despite all finesse and cool elegance, one attribute remains at the heart of this Zweigelt: pure juiciness. To allow this mouth- watering juiciness to flow unhindered, serve best at 15-16° C.

Description

Gernot and Heike Heinrich have never been afraid to innovate. After taking over Gernot’s family winery in 1985 Heinrich was one of the first producers in the region to branch out from making simple whites to produce high-quality reds, seeing the potential in local varietals like Blaufränkisch, Zweigelt and St Laurent. They are passionate about biodynamics because they feel it’s right for the planet but also that they can producer better wine with a more precise expression of vineyard and soils. They converted in 2006 and were one of the founding members of Respekt, a certifying body for biodynamic viticulture in Austria. Gernot believes that the best wines express a sense of place, and that they can only do this if they’re rooted in a biologically diverse environment and the vines live in symbiosis with a healthy ecosystem. As you would expect from a biodynamic producer, Heinrich aim for a little intervention in the winery as possible, choosing not to rush their wines, but give them the time they need to achieve balance.

Bottled with conscientious handcraft and great care throughout the entire life cycle. Organic cultivation of the vineyards. Handpicked from the beginning to mid-September, spontaneous fermentation, two weeks maceration on the skins in wooden fermentation vat and steel tank. 17 months maturation in wooden vats and 500-litre oak barrels.
