Guerrieri Rizzardi2017 ‘Calcarole’ Amarone della Valpolicella Riserva DOCG, Guerrieri Rizzardi
Veneto, ItalyVintage: 2016
Calcarole is the flagship Amarone Riserva from Guerrieri Rizzardi—produced only in exceptional vintages and in very limited quantities. Sourced from the historic marogne (dry stone-walled terraces) of the Calcarole vineyard, perched up to 230 meters in Negrar di Valpolicella, this prized cru benefits from a uniquely warm microclimate, calcareous soils, and an ideal southwest exposure.
Hand-harvested from naturally low-yielding, mature vines, the grapes are selected at peak ripeness and air-dried for several months in traditional wooden crates. After a slow fermentation, the wine undergoes extended ageing in oak, allowing its complexity and structure to evolve gracefully.
The 2017 vintage is already showing remarkable generosity and approachability. Deep and expressive, it reveals layers of dried cherries, ripe plums, spice, cocoa, and earthy undertones. The palate is rich yet beautifully balanced, combining intensity and concentration with lifted freshness and a long, refined finish. A rarefied Amarone that offers both immediate pleasure and cellaring potential.
Ageing Potential: Enjoy now or cellar through 2035+
Food Pairing: Perfect with braised meats, aged cheeses, game dishes, or enjoyed on its own as a special occasion wine.
Why we love it
A masterful Amarone – crafted from one of Valpolicella’s most iconic vineyards, Calcarole is depth, elegance, and terroir in perfect harmony.

Description
Guerrieri Rizzardi is a renowned winery located in the Veneto region of northern Italy, specifically in the Valpolicella area. The winery has a rich history and is well-known for producing high-quality wines that highlight the traditional and modern winemaking techniques of the region.
Guerrieri Rizzardi’s vineyards are situated in some of the finest wine-growing areas in Veneto, primarily in the Soave and Valpolicella regions. These regions are famous for their volcanic soils, which provide ideal conditions for growing the region’s signature grape varieties. The terroir, combined with the winery’s commitment to sustainable farming practices, contributes to the distinctive characteristics of its wines.
The winery’s vineyards are located at varying altitudes, which helps to create a balance between the ripeness of the fruit and the freshness in the wines. The combination of different climates and soils enhances the complexity of the wines and allows for a broad range of wine styles.
Made from 100% dried grapes, raisined in the drying rooms for 3 months. The grapes were crushed on the 4th and 5th of December 2017 then follows a long fermentation of one month in stainless steel vats (20°C to 25°C) followed by malolactic fermentation in oak. 12 months in barriques (225l) oak barrels then 24 months in 2500 litre oak barrels.
