Kershaw

2018 Chardonnay ‘Deconstructed Lake District Cartref CY96’, Kershaw

Western Cape, South AfricaVintage: 2018

This outstanding Chardonnay from Richard Kershaw MW is sourced from a parcel in the western part of Elgin, the CY96 in the wines name is in reference to a clone of the Chardonnay grape that is known for its excellent quality, creating wines that are nervous, aromatic, elegant and crisp with slightly lower alcohol and finely balanced, the fruit profile being subtle with hints of citrus/orange peel and peach blossom and with time, some nutty elements. The Cartref soils, a mixture of decomposed granite, pebbles and quartz, add delicacy and heighten the fruit intensity.

 Only 780 bottles were produced.

Notable Awards

Wine Advocate 90/100
The 2018 Lake District Cartref CY96 Deconstructed Chardonnay offers a more expansive expression than the Bokkeveld Shale bottlings. It has soft notions of butterscotch, crème brûlée and buttered popcorn on the nose, while sweet citrus aromas waft from the glass along with elements of poached yellow apples. Medium to full-bodied, the palate expands to display width and breadth of expression yet still possesses acidity to keep its balance in check. The wine concludes with persistent flavors of buttered popcorn and subtle hints of smoke and Meyer lemon.

Description

Made in tiny quantities, Richard Kershaw MW’s wines are always in high demand. Born in Sheffield, Richard trained and worked as a chef before discovering wine. After extensive travelling, he settled in South Africa in 1999, and by 2009 he was Group Winemaker at Mulderbosch and Kanu. He established Richard Kershaw Wines in 2012, specialising in the cool-climate wines of Elgin. Being one of the few MW’s to make his own wine, he uses his vast knowledge to craft stunning wines that are easily a match for some of the world’s very best wines.

Grapes were hand-picked on an early autumnal morning, placed into small lug baskets and tipped directly into a press before being gently whole-bunch pressed up to a maximum of 0.6 bar or until a low juice recovery of 615 litres per ton was obtained using our new Willmes Sigma 5 Press. The juice gravity-flowed directly to barrel (no pumps were used at all) without settling. The unclarified juice had no enzymes or yeast added to it and therefore underwent spontaneous fermentation until dry, with malolactic discouraged. The wine rested in barrel for 4 months prior to judicious sulphuring and a further 7 months’ maturation in barrel before racking and bottling.

BARREL SELECTION: A small number of artisanal coopers were selected, all from Burgundy and only French oak was chosen. Importantly, this wine was micro-vinified as a separate batch. Over the years we have developed an algorithm to ascertain which coopers work best and how many new and used barrels are utilised. In 2018, 52.5% was new oak; 100% using 228 litre barrels.
