  • 2019 ‘The Black’ Shiraz ‘Winemakers Reserve’, Berton VineyardRed Wine

2019 ‘The Black’ Shiraz ‘Winemakers Reserve’, Berton Vineyard

    £1225

The Winemakers Reserve Black Shiraz is a multi-award winning wine and an outstanding example of Australian Shiraz with deep colour and aromas of blackberry and plum over toasty coffee and spicy oak. The palate is full-flavoured and intense with rich plum, blueberry and mocha notes. The tannins are ripe and dense imparting great structure and length to the palate.

Predominantly sourced from the vineyards in Padthaway, South Australia, where the soils are sandy loam over clay, formed on old lagoon sediments. These sandy soils lead to poor nutrient and water retention which helps to concentrate the flavours in the fruit. The vines are grown on single wire trellises, ensuring an open canopy. Drip irrigation is used in the vineyards to manage the water supply and reduce evaporation, as water is applied directly above the roots. The fruit was harvested during the cooler nights to retain freshness.

  • 2014 Côtes du Rhône, Domaine Roche AudranRed Wine

2014 Côtes du Rhône, Domaine Roche Audran

    £1250

The highly motivated and energetic Vincent Rochette is only in his mid-30s but has already made a name for himself for his superbly sculpted Visans and Cotes du Rhones. He owns land in both the communes of Visan and Buisson and this diversity of terroirs largely explains the extraordinary complexity in his wines.

Stunning is a word that can easily be over-used but it is hard to think of another word for the quality. His organic, biodynamic wines have an additional depth to them and exhibit a purity of fruit and ripeness which manifests itself in the wines’ silky texture as much as its flavours.

This is a wonderful Cotes du Rhone made from a 60-year-old vineyard on the slopes of Rasteau and Cairanne.  The vineyard is surrounded by natural vegetation that contributes to the aromatic complexity of the wines: Aleppo pine, white oak, viburnum, boxwood, rosemary, dogwood, thyme.   It is intensely fleshy, generous and full-bodied red wine packed with mulberry spice and damson fruit.   Smooth and soft tannins with excellent length and freshness.

  • 2018 Sauvignon Blanc ‘Sibaris’ Gran Reserva , UndurragaWhite Wine

2018 Sauvignon Blanc ‘Sibaris’ Gran Reserva , Undurraga

    £1250

This exceptional single vineyard Sauvignon Blanc has a complex nose of zesty grapefruit and lime is accompanied by hints of black pepper and delicate floral aromas, with herbaceous and mineral undertones. Harmoniously balanced on the palate with delicious acidity offering mouthwatering citrus and mineral tones through to a persistent finish.

The grapes are grown in the Lomas de Leyda vineyard, situated in the Leyda Valley. The climate is moderated by the cooling influence of the Pacific Ocean and summer coastal fogs which last until midday. This effect extends the ripening period, ensuring slow ripening and the development of intense and very fresh flavours and aromas. Average rainfall in the Leyda Valley is 250 millimetres. The soil is finely textured and of low fertility. The upper layer is thin loamy clay, with a layer of cracked clay over decomposed granite, which has a varied mineral structure. The valley has gentle slopes with areas exposed to differing levels of sunlight exposure.

  • 2021 Chenin Blanc ‘Steen op Hout’, MulderboschWhite Wine

2021 Chenin Blanc ‘Steen op Hout’, Mulderbosch

    £1250

Mulderbosch was one of the very first producers in the Cape to ferment Chenin Blanc in barriques. The resultant wine garnered an avid following and Mulderbosch has since become synonymous with the variety.

This 2021 Chenin Blanc ‘Steen op Hout’ is a vibrant and fresh expression of Chenin Blanc. Aromas of fresh pear, apricot and subtle oak spice lead to a firm texture with a beautiful crisp line penetrating the length of the palate supporting flavours of ripe Granny Smith apples and cinnamon spice.

The fruit for the ‘Steen op Hout’ blend is sourced from vineyards in Stellenbosch, mostly on soils derived from decomposed granite, and with high gravelly clay content.  There are two Chenin Blanc vineyards at Mulderbosch: one a trellised vineyard and the other a dryland farmed bush vine block and they vary in age from five years old to 35 years old. Significantly, they are all within a range two to eight miles from the Atlantic Ocean at False Bay, and as such are strongly influenced by a maritime climate, which plays a crucial role in the ultimate wine’s freshness and poise.

  • 2020 Chenin Blanc, Ernst Gouws & CoWhite Wine

2020 Chenin Blanc, Ernst Gouws & Co

    £1250

Ernst Gouws, the jovial patriarch of the Gouws family and winemaker extraordinaire, firmly believes in the French philosophy that the quality of the wine is inextricably linked to the origin of the vineyards and its terroir. Grapes are therefore hand-harvested from site-specific vineyards around the town of Stellenbosch, which is world-famous for producing quality, fruit-driven wines.

This 2020 Chenin Blanc is a fabulous everyday wine.  Whiffs of paw-paw, granadilla, yellow- and green apples, and peaches dominate the aromatic spectrum. The crunchy acidity and slight textural mouthfeel combine with the vibrant tropical fruit characters to result in a fresh, more-ish, typical Stellenbosch style of Chenin Blanc. Lingering flavours of cling peach and pineapple on the finish.

Light and tasty, this is an ideal refreshing wine for those long al fresco lunches during the warm summer months! A perfect accompaniment to a wide array of vegetable dishes, salads and fresh seafood.

2008 Muscat de Beaumes de Venise ‘Cuvée Les Trois Fonts’, Domaine de Coyeux – 375ml

    £1250

A delicious sweet wine, with notes of lychee, candied apricot and pear, tropical pineapple complemented by honey undertones. Rich, smooth and sweet on the palate, beautifully balanced by freshness and elegance.

The vineyard provides naturally healthy conditions, due to its altitude, exposure to the sun and the microclimate of the vineyard and enables gentle methods of cultivation to be employed, in order to maintain a healthy vineyard. The vines are planted in alluvial, sandy soils. Excessive buds and leaves are removed in the spring to aerate the strains and increase the leaf’s surface area exposed to the sun. Debudding reduces the production of berries and concentrates the flavours and aromas in those remaining. The living soils, where microbial life creates organic soil enrichment, nourishes the vines.
