2021 Chianti Classico, Tenuta di Bibbiano

    £2450

Bibbiano is one of the oldest estates in the Chianti Classico belonging to the same family. Since 1865, the entrepreneurial spirit and tradition has been handed down from father to son. Their philosophy is based on responsibility and consistency; `Responsibility for what we do for the earth, for the area and for the unique wines; consistency in following one`s vocation, respecting the nature of the territory and family traditions.

This energetic Chianti Classico jumps from the glass with candied mixed berries, fresh flowers, dusty earth, and fresh, sandy herbs. Medium-bodied and juicy on the palate, it has refreshing acidity, fine tannins, and a snappy finish with a hint of white pepper spice.

2022 ‘The Apple Doesn’t Fall Far From The Tree’ Malbec, Matias Riccitelli

    £2475

Deep purple in colour, with beautiful aromas of wild dark fruits, vanilla and chocolate on the nose. This is a complex and rich Malbec with smooth ripe tannins and a long finish.

The grapes are hand-picked from Matias Riccitelli’s vineyards. Half the grapes come from the Perdriel vineyard at 950 metres above sea level in the subregion of Lujan de Cuyo. Located at the banks of the Mendoza River, the rocky soil delivers a rich wine, with ripe fruit and smooth tannins. The other half comes from Gualtallary, which is situated at 1,400 metres altitude in the northern part of the Uco Valley. The vines here deliver fresh, spicy Malbec from calcareous soils. A green harvest is performed in December to concentrate the flavours in the berries. Both vineyards are influenced by diurnal temperature changes which encourages a long hang time, promoting concentrated flavours in the berries while retaining balancing acidity.

2021 ‘The Apple Doesn’t Fall Far From The Tree’ Bonarda, Matias Riccitelli

    £2475

This deep purple-hued wine has a beautiful aroma of red dark fruit combined with a touch of mint, layered with chocolate notes. Complex and smooth on the palate with ripe tannins and a long finish.

The Vistalba vineyards are located in Lujan de Cuyo and are situated at an altitude of 1,050 metres above sea level. The continental climate is characterised by cold winters and mild summers, with warm days and cool nights. The heat assists the promotion of sugar levels in the ripening grapes, while the coolness of the night retains the acidity level, achieving healthy and balanced berries. The average rainfall is 200mm and the traditional technique of flooding is used for irrigating the vines. The average age of the vines is 60 years; planted as “ espaldero” (vertical shoot position) resulting in a naturally low yield which results in a fresh wine of great concentration. The Vistalba soils are clay, loamy soils above the rocky subsoil. This soil has good drainage, promoting the healing and growth of roots.

From the winemaker: The wonderful world of wine gives us around 60 or more synonyms for one of our favourite varieties, Mataro, well-known ones such as Mourvedre and Monastrell, lesser-known ones such as Balzac and Exparte. We love the mutts at Teusner (dogs can sometimes outnumber humans!)… it’s somewhat ironic that we chose this particular name for Mataro…Estrangle Chien in France…The Dog Strangler in the Barossa.

2021 ‘NightJar’ Pinot Noir, Blackbook Winery

    £2495

English wine has really come on leaps and bounds in the last five years, go longer a gimmick but serious players on the world scene.  Blackbook Winery is one of those at the forefront of this, particularly with their extraordinarily brilliant Pinot Noir.

This 2018 ‘NightJar’ Pinot Noir is reminiscent of old-world Pinot Noir, showing elements of sour and black cherries, blackcurrant with delicate hints of violet. It marries ripe fruit with sweet spice and black pepper while refined tannins lend structure through to a long, savoury finish.

The grapes for this wine are sourced from a single vineyard ‘Clayhill’ vineyard, which is situated on the coastal peninsula of the Crouch Valley in Essex, between the Crouch and Blackwater Rivers. Planted in 2006, the vineyard is south facing to optimise the sunlight. The mesoclimate is sunny and warm, ideal for the production of quality fruit. The soil is made up of clay, which offers good water retention properties, nourishing the vines throughout the summer growth period. The gapes are hand-picked into small crates to retain the quality of the fruit.

2018 is being hailed across the UK as the ‘harvest of the century’ following record-breaking summer, with warm temperatures throughout the growing period. The ideal weather conditions carried through into the autumn, creating a long slow ripening period, allowing the fruit to reach good phenolic maturity with good balance. The vines produced high yields of excellent quality fruit.
