2022 ‘Pojega’ Valpolicella Ripasso Classico Superiore, Guerrieri Rizzardi – MAGNUM

    £4500

A magnum of 2022 Pojega Ripasso Valpolicella by Guerrieri Rizzardi

Crafted from hand-harvested grapes grown on the historic Rizzardi family estate—established in 1649 and nestled in the heart of the Valpolicella Classico zone—this Ripasso showcases both tradition and finesse. The inclusion of 10% Amarone in the Ripasso process brings added depth and structure to the wine, while preserving the hallmark freshness and elegance of the region.

In the glass, the nose of the 2022 Pojega is aromatic and expressive, offering layers of ripe dark cherry, blackberry, and plum, with subtle hints of spice, dried herbs, and cocoa. The palate is medium to full-bodied, with a vibrant acidity that lends lift and drinkability, balanced by a supple texture and fine-grained tannins. The Amarone component adds richness and complexity, contributing to a long, persistent finish with notes of dark fruit and earthy undertones.

Multi-dimensional and refined, Pojega is a red that captivates now and promises even more with time in the bottle. A perfect companion to hearty dishes, but equally compelling on its own.

    2017 Syrah ‘Clonal Selection’, Kershaw

    £4750

A subtle, precise style of Syrah built on fine tannins that educe harmony and freshness with flavours of black fruits, iodine and ground white peppercorns.  Only 9253 bottles and 33 Magnums.

The grapes come from five small vineyard parcels in several locations in the Elgin Valley. Elgin is the coolest wine region in South Africa and is situated on an inland, hexagonal shaped plateau, at an altitude of 300 metres. The region is surrounded by mountains and lies just over six miles from the Atlantic Ocean, which brings occasional sea-borne mists. February is the hottest month of the year, with daytime temperatures peaking at 23°C and night-time temperatures dipping to 14°C. The benefit of this cooler climate is that the grape cluster stays connected to its roots for longer, so it develops complex characteristics and achieves physiological ripeness more gradually, resulting in lower sugar levels and consequently lower alcohol levels.

2018 Estate Grown Pinot Noir, Sleepy Hollow Vineyard, Talbott

    £4800

Talbott Vineyards is defined by its iconic Sleepy Hollow Vineyard, where the conditions are ideal for exceptional, cool-climate Pinot Noir. Located in the northern area of the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA in Monterey County, it has been designated one of California’s Grand Cru vineyards by Wine Enthusiast in 2016, for its ability to produce exceptional wines year after year. The vines were first planted in 1972 at an elevation of 168 metres and cover 228 hectares. Due to the proximity of the Pacific Ocean and the east-to-northeasterly exposure, cooling fog and frequent ocean breezes temper the warm sunshine, giving Sleepy Hollow one of the longest growing seasons in California and allowing each grape to develop concentrated flavours.

This Pinot Noir offers a distinct earthiness, minerality with hints of nutmeg and clove mingling with notes of ripe black cherry, raspberry and vanilla bean to deliver a rich, mouth-filling texture through to a complex finish.

  • <a href="https://wine-republic.co.uk/product/2010-the-ironstone-pressings-gsm-darenberg/">2010 The Ironstone Pressings GSM, d’Arenberg</a> Red Wine

2010 The Ironstone Pressings GSM, d’Arenberg

    £4900

The Ironstone Pressings is named because most of McLaren Vale’s acclaimed and historic vineyards are impregnated with ancient, decomposed laterite granite known as ironstone. Its extraordinary rusty red-brown colour is derived from the iron oxides present in the stone. The larger pieces were cleared from the vineyards in the late 1880s and utilised in many of the buildings at d’Arenberg, most notably the old stables.

Unctuous blackberry and plum notes lay at the heart of this classic d’Arenberg example of a Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvedre (GSM).  A spattering of exotic spices the likes of star anise, cardamom and nutmeg cling to the sweet, dark fruits and of course, it wouldn’t be a d’Arenberg wine without a rousing dose of earthy, gamey character.   The palate is fleshy and juicy with an almost velvet-like texture. Abundantly warm and generous but sufficiently structured to suggest this wine can go the long hall.

While enjoyable in youth, this wine will reach its full potential with bottle age up to at least 20 years. The considerable structure and depth will ensure that the fruit characters will develop over time revealing more complexity and providing immense interest.

  • <a href="https://wine-republic.co.uk/product/2016-estate-shiraz-paringa-estate/">2016 Estate Shiraz, Paringa Estate</a> Red Wine

    2016 Estate Shiraz, Paringa Estate

    £4900

In 2007 James Halliday awarded Paringa the title of ‘Best Winery in Australia’, not a bad effort for former school teacher Lindsay McCall who heads up the operation. McCall was one of the early pioneers in Mornington, who boldly experimented with different styles and possibilities in the region and quickly earned himself an impressive reputation, despite his humble beginnings as a teacher. He was the first to recognise the potential of the Mornington Peninsula for Australia’s favourite grape – Shiraz, and thank God he did. The result is the exact wine we have today, a spicy, dark, cool-climate Shiraz. Elegant and refined, a testament to the efforts of an exceptionally gifted winemaker.

In the glass, aromas of black pepper, blackberry and plum waft invitingly and lead the way into a flavoursome palate, which is savoury and textured. Fine-grained tannins give outstanding structure, balance and palate length. This is an excellent Paringa Shiraz that can be enjoyed young with food but will also cellar well for the next 20 years.

    2021 Pinot Noir, Scribe Winery

    £4900

Scribe Winery produces vibrant, terroir-driven wines from Sonoma, California. The winery was founded in 2007 on a property that helped pioneer pre-prohibition Sonoma Valley wine-making and is managed by fourth-generation California farmers and brothers, Andrew and Adam Mariani.

A pure, elegant and classy Pinot Noir with bright red fruits layered with floral notes, rhubarb and a touch of cacao through to a silky palate with refined tannins and a long, smooth finish.

The Pinot Noir grapes come from three vineyards across the Carneros AVA. This wine is made up of a blend of equal parts of clones Dijon 777, known for being dark and rich and produces rich, velvety and complex wines; Dijon 115, which delivers pure Pinot Noir flavours and Pommard, which delivers pure, dark fruit. Two of the vineyards, Sandbach and El Novillero, are both within a five-mile radius of the Scribe Estate and the remainder are on similar Huichica soils. The third, the Reinke Vineyard, lies a little further east on Bressa-Dibble clay loam soils. All three vineyards benefit from the cooling influence from the winds of the San Pablo Bay, which creates a cooler mesoclimate resulting in slow, even ripening, which helps to build concentrated fruit flavours, while retaining natural, balancing acidity. The grapes are hand-harvested at night to preserve the fresh vibrancy in the fruit.

A touch of espresso and dark chocolate lingers on the mid-palate, while savory accents of leather and earth provide depth and complexity. Despite its power, the wine maintains remarkable balance, with a vibrant acidity that lifts the richness and a long, warming finish that echoes with dried herbs and spice.

    2018 Barolo Tortoniano, Michele Chiarlo

    £4950

This magnificent Barolo is a complex and full-bodied wine with inviting aromas of deep fruits, rose petals, juniper berries and a hint of fine spice. The palate shows a wonderful harmony, with silky tannins and remarkable elegance and persistence.

The vineyard sits on a southeast to southwesterly orientation and the vines are trained according to the Guyot method. The vines are thinned during the summer months to control the health and vigour of the vine. The soils are from the Tortonian geological area of La Mora and Barolo, which is characterised by sedimentary clay and Sant’Agata marl interspersed with grey-blue sandstone. A significant presence of microelements specifically magnesium and manganese enhance the soil’s complexity. The grapes are manually harvested at optimum maturity.
