  • 2010 Patrina Syrah, Alban Vineyards Wine Republic Heros Red Wine

    2010 Patrina Syrah, Alban Vineyards

    £6500

John Alban is more than a wine producer: Robert Parker has described him as the “spiritual and qualitative leader of the Rhône Ranger movement”: his impact on wine production in California is not to be understated.  Established in 1989, Alban Vineyards represents California’s first winery and vineyard dedicated exclusively to the varietals of the Rhône at a time when anything that was neither Cabernet nor Chardonnay was barely grown in California, Alban was a groundbreaking project and has gone on to be regarded as one of the U.S.A’s best and most influential producers.

The 2010 Patrina boasts gorgeously pure aromatics of cassis, raspberry, flowers and spice, full-bodied richness and an overall layered, fresh profile that’s hard to resist.

It offers a rare and affordable glimpse into the craft of one of the Central Coast’s most enduring pioneers of Rhone varieties.

2015 Côte-Rôtie, Blonde du Seigneur, Georges Vernay

    £6800

Although Domaine Georges Vernay has built its reputation around its excellent Condrieu white wines, its reds should not be neglected, especially ones from the Côte-Rôtie. From a 5 ha plot of vines, Vernay’s Côte-Rôtie is amongst the most exceptional wines from the same appellation. Thanks to a perfectly mastered elegant wine style, Christine Vernay successfully expresses the elegance and depth of syrah; never over maturing or over ageing.

This Côte blonde-style Côte-Rôtie with 5% Viognier, is the perfect blend of intensity and delicacy. Dark in colour with a mineral smoky nose with dark fruits, black olive and pepper all enhanced by a floral component brought by the Viognier. This is a highly aromatic and elegant wine. With well-constructed but perfectly smooth tannins, this Côte-Rôtie is well-rounded on the palate with a beautiful long finish. Smooth and sensual, it expresses an immediate pleasure

Côte Rôtie is a prestigious red wine appellation at the northern tip of the Rhône Valley wine region, where the vineyards are situated on steep slopes – the Côtes. The three hectares of vineyard is located in the parish of Semons in the plot ‘Coteau de Bassenon’; and in the parish of Ampuis, in the plots of ‘Lancement’ and ‘Tupin’. The vineyards are situated on South facing granite terraces. Due to the steep slopes in the vineyards, these 30 year old vines are maintained manually, without the use of weed killers and all treatments use organic products.

  • 2020 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Xanadu Wine Republic Heros Red Wine

    2020 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Xanadu

    £6900

The Quintessential Margaret River Cabernet, with perfumed black fruit aromas and a generous, velvety palate packed with irresistible dark forest fruit and chocolate characters.

The Reserve range continues to be the best of what Xanadu are able to produce in a given vintage – single vineyard or otherwise. Fruit was predominantly sourced from two mature, dry grown vineyards; Timber Creek, in the Wilyabrup subregion; and Victory Point in the Treeton subregion of Margaret River and was supplemented with a small amount of Malbec from the Stevens Road vineyard in Wallcliffe. The resulting blend from these vineyards has married beautifully, proving again that sometimes ‘the whole is greater than the sum of its parts’.

  • 2005 Montevetrano, Silvia ImparatoRed Wine

    2005 Montevetrano, Silvia Imparato

    £6950

Dubbed ‘the Sassicaia of the South’ by Robert Parker in 1995,  Montevetrano is a wine that sells at a price well below its comparative quality. With a trailblazing owner, creating wines from international grape varieties that are recognisably Italian, Montevetrano has gained a cult following. Brainchild of Silvia Imperatore, who enlisted the help of her friend and top winemaking consultant Riccardo Cotarella, it’s not hard to see why the estate is so frequently likened to legend Sassicaia.

The 2005 Montevetrano is holding together very nicely. The bouquet is elegantly polished with fine aromas of pressed dark fruit, black currant and spice. Now, more than fifteen years after the vintage, the wine has come together with seamless evolution. There are no loose ends here. The dark fruit segues immediately to spice and later onto crushed mineral. That seamless quality also applies to the long and polished mouthfeel.  Finishes clean and impressively long.

  • 2010 Barbaresco Martinenga, Marchesi di GrésyRed Wine

2010 Barbaresco Martinenga, Marchesi di Grésy

    £6995

Barbaresco Martinenga takes its name from Marchesi di Grésy’s Martinenga vineyard situated in the commune of Barbaresco. This single-vineyard (of 11.93ha) has the shape of an amphitheatre, with Asili to the west and Rabaja to the north-east. These south-southwest facing vineyards have a favourable microclimate, which allows the production of high-quality grapes even in potentially difficult vintages.

‘Rose petals, violets and dark red cherries emerge from the 2010 Barbaresco Martinenga. In 2010 the Martinenga is quite supple, open and generous, with a kick of acidity and brightness on the finish, both signatures of the year. Beautiful, structured and powerful in the glass, yet also restrained in the classic Gresy style, the 2010 is a beauty. This is a fabulous showing.’ 92+ points, Antonio Galloni – Vinous

  • 2017 Sanford & Benedict Vineyard Pinot Noir, SanfordRed Wine

2017 Sanford & Benedict Vineyard Pinot Noir, Sanford

    £7200

The Sanford & Benedict Vineyard is where it all began. In 1971 this was the first vineyard planted in what became the world-class, cool-climate Sta. Rita Hills appellation.

Bright, ruby red, the 2016 Sanford & Benedict Pinot Noir entices with aromatic spicy red fruits, complemented by notes of wet stone and dried herb. The palate delivers earthy raspberry flavours with lush, silky texture. The bright acidity and supple tannins give the wine great structure and length. To allow the vineyard to shine through, the winemakers take a gentle approach in the cellar, using traditional Burgundian techniques.

The wine was aged in French Oak barrels (35% new) for 14 months where it gained concentration, while allowing the tannins to soften. This wine is drinking well now, but has the balance and structure to age beautifully for the next 12 to 15 years.

  • 2016 Côte-Rôtie, Blonde du Seigneur, Georges Vernay Wine Republic Heros Red Wine

2016 Côte-Rôtie, Blonde du Seigneur, Georges Vernay

    £7250

Although Domaine Georges Vernay has built its reputation around its excellent Condrieu white wines, its reds should not be neglected, especially ones from the Côte-Rôtie. From a 5 ha plot of vines, Vernay’s Côte-Rôtie is amongst the most exceptional wines from the same appellation. Thanks to a perfectly mastered elegant wine style, Christine Vernay successfully expresses the elegance and depth of syrah; never over maturing or over ageing.

2016 has been hailed as one of the great vintages and only 1200 cases were made in 2016 of the Blonde du Seigneur, so demand is high.   In the glass this 2016 vintage is a dark deep wine offering a mineral nose with notes of smoke, black fruit, black olive, and pepper – always enhanced by a floral component. It is aromatic on the palate, with firm but smooth tannins, and a beautiful lingering finish. Its aromatic mouth, with well-built but smoothed tannins, continues in a beautiful final length. An immediate pleasure that slowly, over the years, grows to be the most typical expression of the Syrah from Cote-Rotie.

  • 2015 Château Cantenac BrownRed Wine

    2015 Château Cantenac Brown

    £7250

The 2015 is a wine of great substance and beautiful ripeness. The generous core of blackberry, blackcurrant, cherry and redcurrant fruit is enveloped in savoury roasted notes. It is opulent and rich, with fine-grained tannins which delicately coat the palate through to the endless finish. Classic Margaux.

The vineyard is managed in an environmentally friendly manner and Cantenac Brown holds the Haute Valeur Environmentale certificate (HVE3) level 3 which is the highest level. Only plant-based fertilisers are applied using a moderate and balanced approach in tune with the needs of the vines. The double Guyot trained vines are meticulously cultivated throughout the year, with pruning, removal of buds, leaves and secondary shoots; thinning out and controlled yields. The Cantenac Brown team uses traditional soil maintenance techniques to enhance the structural, chemical and biological properties of the soil. The soil is predominantly gravelly soil, with clay and sand.
