Red WineChateau Le Pey is made up of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Merlot and comes from a vineyard area of 32 hectares. The soils here are clay and limestone and the average age of the vines is 20 years of age. The wine spends 12 months in oak of which 25% is new. This Château is situated just north of St-Estèphe.
This excellent value Bordeaux, opens in the glass with an appealing complex bouquet (ripe grapes, wood, and spices). On the palate, it is a full and well-balanced wine.
Matured in a combination of French and American oak hogsheads this classically styled Clare Valley Shiraz displays a totally opaque inky black crimson colour with dark crimson black tinged hue. Luscious ripe blackberry and liquorice top notes exude from the glass followed by some dark chocolate, vanillin oak and a faint hint of spearmint as an endnote. Rich and full-bodied the palate features a plush flavour profile of ripe blackberry, dark plum and liquorice over some spearmint and vanillin oak-like characters. Velvet smooth tannins with long blackberry, liquorice, spearmint and vanillin oak aftertaste.
The fruit for this wine comes from un-irrigated, hand-pruned and hand-picked vines grown at Skillogalee around 450m above sea level. The wine was vinified in open fermenters and then basket-pressed. No fining was needed. Malo-lactic (secondary) fermentation and maturation took place in predominantly French oak hogsheads for around 24 months, before the separate components were blended and bottled.
Red WineOpulent, “Worthy of a grand cru”, according to the Hachette Guide, this pure Merlot is aged in new barrels, a glass of rich, powerful wine with a beautiful balance between roasted aromas and intense black fruit flavours. With velvety tannins and well-integrated oak, the dark berry flavours are complemented by hints of cigar box and a smooth, elegant finish.
2016 has been lauded as an excellent and classic vintage in Bordeaux and this wine certainly lives up to the hype.
Château de Valois is a traditional right-bank Bordeaux from a small property with a growing reputation. Beautifully traditional they blend Merlot and Cabernet Franc grown in iron-rich soils just a stone’s throw from Chateau Figeac and Chateau Cheval Blanc.
The 2016 nose is bursting with blackberries, exotic spice and hints of smoky oak and cedar. On the palate, the texture is rich and generous, with soft tannins. The finish has a good freshness and is full of lingering ripe fruit.
The second wine of Château Cantenac Brown is textured and opulent with rich aromas of red fruits complemented by notes of dark chocolate. Full and round, with the red fruit aromas echoed on the palate, the tannins are seamlessly integrated through to a powerful finish.
The vineyard is managed using sustainable agriculture; strictly plant-based fertilisers are applied in moderation. The Cantenac Brown team uses traditional soil maintenance techniques to enhance the structural, chemical and biological properties of the soil. The vines have an average age of 35 years and are pruned according to the double Guyot method. They are meticulously cared for throughout the year, with pruning; removal of buds, leaves and secondary shoots; thinning out and yield control, all taking place to ensure the highest possible quality.
Red WineChateau Monbrison produce classic claret. The wines are seductive and perfumed on the nose and display a firm but supple structure with excellent depth of fruit on the palate. we think this is a very underrated Margaux and consistency produces great wines that are excellent value and age very well in the short to medium term.
The 2016 Monbrison is delicious and everything you want in a Margaux. In the glass the nose has precise aromas of blueberry, raspberry and crushed violets. The palate is pliant, impeccably balanced with racy tannins. The depth and purity is striking. Drink now to 2035.
Red WinePrecise, intense and expressive wine. This second wine reflects the terroir of Pauillac and pays a fine tribute to Château Haut-Bages Libéral.
The nose is fruity, powerful, well-balanced and offers concentration. It reveals notes of cassis, blackberry and small notes of gravels/terroir associated with nice touches of strawberry/red fruits as well as discreet hints of pepper, liquorice, cardamom and spices. The palate is fruity, well-balanced and offers a good definition, juiciness, a beautiful frame as well as a good roundness. On the palate, this wine expresses notes of fleshy/juicy cassis and crushed blackberry with touches of red fruits (strawberry, cherry) as well as discreet hints of liquorice and chocolate/tonka bean. Tannins are fine and elegant.
This incredible blend of Shiraz & Cabernet Sauvignon is a uniquely Australian blend that pays homage to the great Aussie wines of yesteryear. With plenty of sweet spice and brambly black fruit comes a concentrated blackcurrant and vanilla aroma following on to a rich, full-bodied palate. The flavour is full of crunchy black fruit with soft tannins, refreshing acidity and subtle vanilla sweetness.
The name Rod & Spur acknowledges the contribution of Rockford’s growers who spend the cold Barossa winters hand-pruning their vines in the traditional rod and spur method. This wine is a return to the great Australian reds of the 1950’s and 60’s, when Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon blends dominated the premium market. This very Australian wine is not common in any other region of the world.
Like all Rockford reds, the grapes for this wine go through a 1880’s Bagshaw de-stemmer, are open fermented and then gently basket pressed. All components are aged separately in a combination of seasoned American and French oak hogsheads and large oak casks for two years. This allows the tannins to soften and colours and flavours to consolidate, before being bottled under the highest quality cork.
The 2018 vintage was described by Rockford’s winemaking team as ‘One of those years when things just fell into place. Despite the season being one of the driest in many decades, it lacked any prolonged heat waves or significant rainfall events. The Eden Valley Shiraz components, in particular, were standout in the warm dry conditions. The 2018 wines have striking colours, outstanding structure, richness and mouthfeel.
The nose on this elegant cabernet is generous, rich and ripe with plenty of classic blackcurrant fruit with cocoa and tobacco notes. The palate is fresh and herbal with thyme notes that lift the concentrated black fruit. Smooth, silky tannins and a wonderful freshness on the finish.
Rifle Range Road which runs parallel to Krondorf Road, is in the heart of the Valley Floor and winds its way up the hills to Kaiser Stuhl National Park. The old rifle range is long gone, but the farming land and vineyards that have long been part of the landscape are still there. “Because most of our Cabernet Sauvignon comes from vineyards adjacent to Rifle Range Road, it seemed the most appropriate name for this wine which has been part of Rockford since the very beginning.”
2018 was the kind of vintage winemakers look forward to. They were able to pick some parcels early and some later across a three-week period, ensuring a complex, naturally balanced wine that will reward cellaring for a further 6-8 years and we suspect much longer for those able to resist!
