  • 2018 Central Coast Unoaked Chardonnay, Lockwood VineyardWhite Wine

2018 Central Coast Unoaked Chardonnay, Lockwood Vineyard

    £1895

This Chardonnay shows delightful aromas of delicate white flowers, fresh green apple and notes of caramel. Clean flavours of apricot and pear are balanced by hint of key lime and lively mineral notes, with a creamy texture and supple mouthfeel, the crisp acidity leads to a long finish.

The grapes are cultivated across the Central Coast, one of the most diverse and climatically cool grape growing regions in California. The soils are made up of crushed fossilised seashells similar to chalk and limestone, which produces elegantly styled wines.

  • 2018 Wonderwall Syrah, Field RecordingsRed Wine

    2018 Wonderwall Syrah, Field Recordings

    £2350

Wonderwall wines are made with grapes grown in extreme, coastal locations and this stunning, approachable Syrah from winemaker Andrew Jones of Field Recordings is for all those lovers of the Rhone Valley classics, Crozes-Hermitage, Cornas or Saint-Joseph.

In the glass, the wine has the prettiest deep purple you will ever see, almost worthy of its own Farrow and Ball colour! Victoria plums, coffee bean, grilled meats, and some thyme and tapenade to add to the lovely plush, rounded palate. The finish is lifted and lingering and blueberry dominant.  It’s a lovely, supple expression of the grape.

As a vine nursery fieldman, Andrew Jones has spent many hours exploring vineyards, planning, planting, and chatting with farmers all over the Central Coast. He began spotting more and more interesting and overlooked vineyards – often rocky, wilder sites located closer to the Pacific, farmed mindfully by clients who have become friends over many years.  This Syrah is sourced from three such vineyards, Zabala in Arroyo Seco AVA, Hinterland in Paso Robles AVA, and Stolo in the tiny coastal community of Cambria.

  • 2018 Ribolla Gialla, Benevolent NeglectWhite Wine

    2018 Ribolla Gialla, Benevolent Neglect

    £4100

Ribolla Gialla is an ancient variety that originated in Greece and is mostly found in northeastern Italy and across the border in Slovenia, where it is known as Rebula.

This California version is sourced from the Bengier Family Vineyard, a hidden gem inside of the Napa Valley’s nested ava Oak Knoll District. Fermented traditionally on skins for 15 days, this wine takes on a completely unique character for white wine. Due to its time on its skin and in the barrel it shows quite a bit of minerality, citrus skin with a core of tropical fruit with much in between.

Tasting Note: Light, bright and fresh lemon sherbet draw the nose in followed by almond and acacia. On the palate, the wine is mineral, with slight notes of sour pear drop. The finish is long and refreshingly sour. This is a perfect oyster wine, match it with foods equally as bright, like a fresh arugula salad with a racy vinaigrette.

  • 2018 Chardonnay, Benevolent NeglectWhite Wine

    2018 Chardonnay, Benevolent Neglect

    £4250

The 2018 Benevolent Neglect Chardonnay was one of the most talked-about wines of 2019. They’re also one of the wineries that the eminent Jancis Robinson was referring to when she urged her readers to “ take advantage of the creativity of California’s new generation of wine producers.” So naturally, we are delighted to have finally secured a small allocation.

Don’t expect a big, over-the-top bottling, though—like all of Benevolent Neglect’s wines, the 2018 Chardonnay showcases precision and purity. Winemaker Matt Nagy says of his wine, “The goal with this wine was to eschew traditional ‘California Chardonnay’ as a style and make something more akin to a Cru Chablis.”   As you might expect, the wine delivers on Matt’s vision. The nose leans towards fresh citrus flavours of yuzu and tangerine, with orange blossoms and hints of oyster shell. The palate is electric and direct, with white peaches joining the party alongside lemon marmalade, white pepper, and a mouth-watering finish.

This Chardonnay comes from a vineyard site that was special enough to warrant “a rehab project,” according to Matt. Organically farmed since the 1970s, the Chardonnay was ungrafted—a rarity in California that trades the eventual death of the vines by phylloxera, a soil-based parasite, for an extra layer of precision and intensity of flavour in the finished wines. The vines had been not-so-benevolently neglected over the last decade, but the raw material was so promising that Matt and his team poured in the work to bring the site back to greatness—and this bottling is proof that their effort was worth it.

As you might expect from the name, the winemaking style at Benevolent Neglect is to stay out of the way. The wines are fermented with native yeasts and this Chardonnay is aged in a minimal amount of new oak to allow the innate quality of the vineyard to shine through.    Drink now – 2028.

  • 2018 Estate Grown Pinot Noir, Sleepy Hollow Vineyard, Talbott Wine Republic Heros Red Wine

2018 Estate Grown Pinot Noir, Sleepy Hollow Vineyard, Talbott

    £4250

Talbott Vineyards is defined by its iconic Sleepy Hollow Vineyard, where the conditions are ideal for exceptional, cool-climate Pinot Noir. Located in the northern area of the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA in Monterey County, it has been designated one of California’s Grand Cru vineyards by Wine Enthusiast in 2016, for its ability to produce exceptional wines year after year. The vines were first planted in 1972 at an elevation of 168 metres and cover 228 hectares. Due to the proximity of the Pacific Ocean and the east-to-northeasterly exposure, cooling fog and frequent ocean breezes temper the warm sunshine, giving Sleepy Hollow one of the longest growing seasons in California and allowing each grape to develop concentrated flavours.

This Pinot Noir offers a distinct earthiness, minerality with hints of nutmeg and clove mingling with notes of ripe black cherry, raspberry and vanilla bean to deliver a rich, mouth-filling texture through to a complex finish.

  • 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Stags Leap District, Chimney Rock Wine Republic Heros Red Wine

2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Stags Leap District, Chimney Rock

    £9200

The Chimney Rock Estate is blessed with a diversity of soil and topography that breeds complexity into the wines. To the east, steep hills and shallow soils bring density and power. On the north end, the proximity to the Palisades brings with it ripeness and purity of fruit. To the south, proximity to the bay brings breezes that add the nuance of cooler climate – adding hints of dried herbs and mint. It is this diversity that has enabled the winemakers to represent the quintessence of Stags Leap District – the tension between grace and power, the balance of finesse and muscle.

This the 35th vintage of this wine, opens in the glass with abundant aromas of blackcurrant and cherry, with hints of mocha, vanilla and floral. On the palate it is rich and savoury with plum and black cherry flavours and hints of dried fig, vanilla, and floral. On the palate this wine is smooth and viscous in the midpalate, full-bodied, and the tannin structure is firm but very polished. Recommend decanting.

  • 2018 Tomahawk Cabernet Sauvignon Stags Leap District, Chimney Rock Wine Republic Heros Red Wine

2018 Tomahawk Cabernet Sauvignon Stags Leap District, Chimney Rock

    £13500

This wine is made from a single vintage, from a single site and crafted to be enjoyed during a single moment in time. Tomahawk Vineyard is a cooler site located at the southern-most point of the Estate which offers a diverse array of soils. In 2018, Mother Nature gifted Napa Valley with perfect weather for the harvest — warm days and cool nights. This allowed tannins to perfectly ripen in the skins and seeds, while preserving beautiful acidity and lower sugars, which resonated well for the age worthiness and balance of the vintage.

In the glass the wine is generous and complex with aromas of cherry cola, cassis and chocolate. Some savory notes and hints of citrus zest and mint. This wine is intensely aromatic and develops in the glass as layers are revealed. The palate is full-bodied, powerful yet exhibits grace and finesse. A rich and dense mid-palate evolves into a muscular and graceful finish.
