Ten Minutes by Tractor needs little introduction, nor does the man in charge, Martin Spedding. A gently-spoken man with a background in finance and IT, in 2002, he finally acknowledged the fact that his true passion lay in wine. Despite his origins in New South Wales, he simply couldn’t get enough of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and would travel down to Victoria to immerse himself in Australia’s heartland of these noble varieties. In 2003, he visited one of his favourite small wineries on Mornington Peninsula and was delighted to discover that it was for sale. Without a moment’s hesitation, he snapped it up, and so began Martin’s journey with Ten Minutes by Tractor.

In the glass, the 2022 Mills Chardonnay opens with a captivating bouquet of grilled hazelnuts and golden almonds, laced with vibrant aromas of key lime pie, lemon curd, and buttery pastry. On the palate, it reveals an impressive core of power and poise, layers of fleshy yellow nectarine and ripe stone fruits unfold, complemented by nuances of candied citrus peel. A beautifully integrated spine of natural acidity lends energy and lift, guiding the wine through a finely etched, elegant finish.

Coolhart is picked earlier than the other Ten Minutes vineyards and is made with more whole bunches.

In the glass, the 2022 Coolart is packed full of spiced blood plum, violet and blackcurrant that weave their way through multiple layers of chalky and succulent tannins that control the palate. A delightful expression of a different Coolart Road, with F block taking the driver’s seat.

  • <a href="https://wine-republic.co.uk/product/2022-porseleinberg-syrah/">2022 Porseleinberg Syrah</a>

    2022 Porseleinberg Syrah

    £6500

Porseleinberg is the result of Marc Kent’s (of Boekenhoutskloof fame) determined search for South Africa’s finest Syrah, a journey that ultimately led him to the Swartland. There, atop the windswept Porseleinberg mountain, he discovered a remote, rugged farm with schist-rich soils, which is now recognised as one of the world’s great Syrah sites.

Established as a single-vineyard project and owned by Boekenhoutskloof, Porseleinberg is meticulously farmed and vinified by winemaker Callie Louw, whose mastery and vision have elevated every vintage since the inaugural 2010 release. Focused exclusively on Syrah, the estate captures the raw power and beauty of its unique terroir, producing wines that are consistently acclaimed for their authenticity, complexity, and age-worthy elegance.

    2022 Meursault, Ropiteau Frères

    £8900

Founded in 1848 by Jean Ropiteau, a visionary just 24 years old at the time, Ropiteau Frères quickly established itself as one of Burgundy’s most respected houses. The arrival of the railway into Meursault enabled the young merchant to expand the reputation of Burgundy’s wines well beyond the region’s borders. Over the decades, the house remained deeply rooted in Meursault, acquiring prestigious parcels and cellars, including a property once belonging to the Hospice de Beaune. Today, Ropiteau Frères is renowned as a specialist in the Côte de Beaune, and particularly in Meursault, crafting wines that express the richness, minerality, and nuance of this world-famous terroir.

The 2022 Meursault from Ropiteau Frères is a textbook expression of the appellation, opulent yet finely poised. Aromas of white peach and lemon are intertwined with notes of acacia blossom and a subtle touch of almond. On the palate, it is creamy and layered, showcasing ripe stone fruit, citrus zest, and a finely textured oak presence. A vibrant mineral backbone, courtesy of the limestone-rich soils, gives lift and length, culminating in a lingering, elegant finish.

  • <a href="https://wine-republic.co.uk/product/2022-lions-tooth-chardonnay-pyramid-valley/">2022 Lion’s Tooth Chardonnay, Pyramid Valley</a>

2022 Lion’s Tooth Chardonnay, Pyramid Valley

    £9200

Pyramid Valley, established by Mike and Claudia Weersing, is a boutique powerhouse in Waipara’s limestone-rich Omihi Hills. They harness old vine Mendoza clones (planted 1982–1990) on cool clay soils to craft site-specific Chardonnay known for its balance of finesse and depth.

The 2022 Lion’s Tooth Chardonnay is a world-class wine and a benchmark New Zealand Chardonnay for lovers of site-expressive wines.

In the glass, it opens with a bouquet of white blossom, lemon curd, and ripe stone fruit, underpinned by flinty reduction and hints of cashew and crushed seashells. The palate is taut and energetic, offering a seamless interplay between citrus, nectarine, and wet stone minerality. A silky, gently oxidative texture from wild ferment and extended lees ageing adds depth, while the wine’s brisk acidity and restrained oak frame the fruit with precision.

Lion’s Tooth takes its name from the abundance of dandelions, often dismissed as weeds, that grow freely among the vines, a nod to the estate’s biodynamic ethos, where such plants are seen as vital contributors to soil health and ecological balance.

  • <a href="https://wine-republic.co.uk/product/2022-puligny-montrachet-1er-cru-les-folatieres-sylvain-debord/">2022 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatieres, Sylvain Debord</a>

2022 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatieres, Sylvain Debord

    £17900

The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières from Sylvain Debord is a superb expression of this esteemed Premier Cru terroir, refined, mineral-driven, and deeply layered. In the glass, it shimmers pale gold with green highlights, revealing a nose that is both delicate and complex. Aromas of white peach, citrus blossom, and lemon curd are woven with hints of toasted hazelnut, fresh brioche, and a flinty minerality. On the palate, the wine is precise and elegantly textured, offering a beautiful balance of tension and richness. Ripe stone fruit, tangy lemon, and a touch of almond unfold over a taut acid backbone, leading to a finish that is long, saline, and gracefully persistent.

‘Les Folatières’ is the largest Premier Cru vineyard in Puligny-Montrachet. This plot is the south-eastern neighbour of Le Montrachet and Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru vineyards, and its higher eastern end reaches further up the slopes of Meursault and Saint Aubin. The vineyard, which is east-facing, benefits from gentle morning sun, giving the grapes time to develop complexity, while cooler overnight influences bring balancing acidity. ‘Les Folatières’ originates from a medieval term for the weather phenomenon “St Elmo fire”, it refers to the lights seen in the vineyard from a distance and to this day it is said this light can still be seen occasionally in the vineyard. The vines are grown on a gentle but much eroded slope of chalk and limestone, which absorbs the warmth and reflects it onto the vines, encouraging ripening. The lack of water forces the vine to seek more mineral-laden hydration deeper in the soil.
