2022 ‘Aria’ Late Picked Riesling, Pegasus Bay

    £2995

Pegasus Bay is a family-owned winery located in New Zealand’s Waipara Valley, renowned for producing expressive wines that reflect their unique terroir. Founded by the Donaldson family in the 1980s, Pegasus Bay has long been recognised as one of the country’s leading wine estates, especially for its aromatic whites.

The 2023 Riesling Aria Late Picked is a sweet, fragrant Riesling, a beautifully composed dessert wine that balances richness with vibrant energy. In the glass, it gleams with a bright golden hue. The nose is evocative and layered, offering a heady bouquet of honeysuckle, rose petal, and orange blossom, interwoven with citrus-laced notes of lemon curd and lime sherbet. Hints of white peach and a steely mineral thread add complexity and poise. On the palate, it delivers a zesty interplay of sweetness and acidity, succulent and honeyed in texture yet lifted by a refreshing citrus tang. Rich and concentrated without ever feeling heavy, it finishes with persistence, clarity, and mouthwatering vibrancy.

2022 Chablis, Michel Laroche et Ses Enfants, Le Domaine d”Henri

    £3000

Laroche is a famous name in Chablis, with family history dating as far back as 1695. Michel Laroche is the patriarch of the family and after decades as the director of Domaine Laroche he decided in 2010 to sell his stake in this business, keeping the historic vineyards that he had inherited, and created a family domaine with his children Margaux and Romain and his wife Cécile, that would be called Le Domaine d’Henri, in homage to his father.

The Chablis region is renowned for its Kimmeridgian marl, a limestone-rich clay formed over 160 million years ago from fossilized marine deposits. This unique soil imparts a distinct minerality and sharp edge to Chablis wines.

The wine expresses flint, herbal notes and citrus in the nose, classic traits of Chablis. Bright crisp acidity provides tension and backbone to the ripe flavors of melon, pear and almonds. Wonderfully versatile with food, this wine is as serious or playful as you would like.

The domain is undoubtedly a perfect embodiment of tradition meets modernity in wine-making.

This Chablis is well-balanced, offering a bright, zingy freshness complemented with rich, fruity flavours. The palate is defined by a minerally undertow, evoking chalk and flint notes. Ripe and structured, it culminates in a long, lingering finish. A reflection of its celebrated terroir, this wine is a testament to sophisticated winemaking.

In terms of vinification, Sébastien keeps it simple. His approach is traditional, as he learned from his father and grandfather. In Chablis this means fermentation and maturation in steel tanks. Sébastien does not use winemaking techniques such as battonage or wood aging; he is all about pure grape and terroir expression. The wine does undergo the usual malolactic fermentation in Chablis, which rounds out the acids just a little more.
