    PR 90-20, Champagne Henri Giraud

    £15500

Time is integral to all exceptional wine, but it is the critical component in Henri Giraud’s PR 90-19. Drawing inspiration from philosophy and physics, the “Perpetual Reserve” is a voyage through Henri Giraud’s vintage history.

The imagery on the bottle offers a metaphysical nod to the role of time in every aspect of this wine. The design features a stylised equation symbolising the compression of time and space, representing the span of vintages and spatial distances captured in this single cuvée.

100% solera-based, PR 90-20 is an 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Chardonnay blend. 1/3 Grand Cru reserve wine from the solera started in 1990, which is designated for Giraud’s MV Fût de Chène, and 2/3 would be from an older “Esprit Nature” solera dating to the 1950s.

In the glass, PR 90-20 from Champagne Henri Giraud reveals a luminous golden hue with fine, persistent bubbles. The nose is expressive and complex, unfolding layers of grapefruit zest, ripe pear, white flowers, and toasted brioche, interwoven with subtle hints of spice, chalk, and orange peel. On the palate, the wine is impeccably balanced, rich and vinous, yet precise and energetic with flavours of candied citrus, green apple, and delicate pastry notes. The signature chalky minerality of Aÿ’s Grand Cru terroir is complemented by the elegant integration of Argonne oak, adding texture and depth without overshadowing the fruit. A creamy mousse and refined acidity lead to a long, focused finish with lingering notes of clove, citrus oil, and fine salinity. This is a Champagne of poise and power, showcasing the meticulous craftsmanship and terroir-driven philosophy of Henri Giraud.

2020 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru, Les Suchots, Domaine Jérôme Chézeaux

    £15900

Domaine Jérôme Chézeaux is a respected, family-run estate based in Nuits-Saint-Georges, at the core of Burgundy’s Côte de Nuits. Since taking over from his father in the 1990s, Jérôme Chézeaux has quietly built a reputation for crafting Pinot Noir that is both traditionally styled and transparently expressive of terroir. The domaine’s vineyards span several of the Côte’s most prestigious appellations, including holdings in Vosne-Romanée, Nuits-Saint-Georges, and Clos de Vougeot, all farmed with sustainable methods and vinified with minimal intervention to capture purity and site specificity.

The 2020 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru ‘Les Suchots’ is sourced from one of the appellation’s most esteemed Premier Cru vineyards, perfectly positioned between Richebourg and Romanée-Saint-Vivant. This parcel combines the elegance of the grands crus with a structure and intensity that speaks to its noble pedigree.

In the glass, the wine offers a seductive bouquet of wild raspberry, black cherry, rose petals, and exotic spice. Beneath the fruit lies a complex layer of sandalwood, forest floor, and crushed stone, characteristic of Vosne’s layered terroir. The palate is silky and seamless, with fine-grained tannins framing a core of red and black fruits, and a mineral tension that carries through a long, refined finish.

Poised and age-worthy, the 2020 ‘Les Suchots’ is a wine of power and finesse, embodying both the classic depth of Vosne-Romanée and the subtle, terroir-driven elegance for which Jérôme Chézeaux is known. A true collector’s wine, it will reward careful cellaring for 10–15 years and beyond, yet shows beautifully even in its relative youth with decanting.

2022 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatieres, Sylvain Debord

    £17900

The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières from Sylvain Debord is a superb expression of this esteemed Premier Cru terroir, refined, mineral-driven, and deeply layered. In the glass, it shimmers pale gold with green highlights, revealing a nose that is both delicate and complex. Aromas of white peach, citrus blossom, and lemon curd are woven with hints of toasted hazelnut, fresh brioche, and a flinty minerality. On the palate, the wine is precise and elegantly textured, offering a beautiful balance of tension and richness. Ripe stone fruit, tangy lemon, and a touch of almond unfold over a taut acid backbone, leading to a finish that is long, saline, and gracefully persistent.

‘Les Folatières’ is the largest Premier Cru vineyard in Puligny-Montrachet. This plot is the south-eastern neighbour of Le Montrachet and Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru vineyards, and its higher eastern end reaches further up the slopes of Meursault and Saint Aubin. The vineyard, which is east-facing, benefits from gentle morning sun, giving the grapes time to develop complexity, while cooler overnight influences bring balancing acidity. ‘Les Folatières’ originates from a medieval term for the weather phenomenon “St Elmo fire”, it refers to the lights seen in the vineyard from a distance and to this day it is said this light can still be seen occasionally in the vineyard. The vines are grown on a gentle but much eroded slope of chalk and limestone, which absorbs the warmth and reflects it onto the vines, encouraging ripening. The lack of water forces the vine to seek more mineral-laden hydration deeper in the soil.
