  Domaine Gauby is located close to the small town of Calce in the Roussillon. Now run by Gérard Gauby, his wife Ghislaine and their son Lionel, who is responsible for the winemaking, the domaine has gained a reputation for making wines of exemplary freshness in a hot climate.

  This 2019 `Calcinaires` Rouge is bright with red and black fruit, notes of wild rosemary and thyme mingle with spice and dark cherry fruit on the palate, balanced by bright acidity and ripe supple tannins.  Worth decanting beforehand to allow to fully open and express.

  Les Loges is a complex and harmonious Pouilly Fumé.  This traditional cuvée is the result of a blend of around thirty plots with clay-limestone soils and Kimmeridgian marls.

  In the glass, this wine opens with a varied bouquet of white flowers, lemon, green fresh herbs and a fresh mineral touch. The palate is invigorating and crystalline with a touch of saltiness that is characteristic of Pouilly’s great wines.

  The Domaine Chignard Fleurie ‘Les Moriers’ is crafted from Gamay vines with an average age of 65+ years that are south facing to maximise their exposure to the sun and aid ripening. The steep slope on which these old vines reside flows down into Moulin-à-Vent, which is why ‘Les Moriers’ has gained such great recognition. Bottled unfined and unfiltered this wine is like a marriage of the two styles; the typical floral Fleurie character but it also has the intensity normally associated with Moulin-à-Vent.

  Set on a hill overlooking the little town of Fuissé, Jean-Paul Paquet, his wife Monique and their son Yannick make wines with tremendous character which benefits from barrel ageing, which accentuates rather than dominates the wines’ natural intensity of pure fruit.

  The 2015 has light mineral and citrus aromas with a dry and medium-bodied palate that has a pleasing balance of roundness and fresh citrus flavours. Gentle oak notes add complexity and richness to the palate as do the 5 years it has had in bottle.

  Great as an aperitif or with freshwater fish and creamy chicken dishes.

  Finely balanced and very aromatic with notes of lychee, rose and ginger. This is dry and with classic restraint, while at the same time expressing beautifully the variety’s exotic and spicy character. Has the intense aromatics to go brilliantly with Asian food but also extremely good with powerful cheeses. The Alsatians drink it with their brine-washed Munster, but it is equally at home with rich blue cheeses from Stilton to Roquefort.

  A fine, elegant wine with plump red berried fruit and delicate hints of oak spice. Smooth and supple on the palate, with fine tannins and a long, persistent finish.

  Château Preuillac is located in the heart of the Médoc. The vineyard covers 30 hectares on a single site. The soils vary with 50% of the vineyard being clay, limestone, and gravel soils; 25% gravel soils, and 25% sandy-gravel. The average age of the vines is 40 years. The vineyard is managed according to the principles of ‘la lutte raisonnée’, or sustainable viticulture. Much of the work in the vineyard is done by hand to optimise the quality of the harvest.

  This 2020 `Calcinaires` Blanc has a fresh nose with delicate aromas of white flowers and notes of peach and quince. The palate is expressive with layers of citrus and stone fruit. A bright acidity is underpinned by a long mineral finish.

  This blend of 40% Grenache Blanc, 30% Chardonnay, 20% Macabeu, and 10% Vermentino is sourced from a mixture of old and young vines planted on clay loam and limestone. The Chardonnay vines are average 45 years old and the Macabeu 80 years old, which gives the grapes great concentration. The Roussillon has incredibly diverse soils which, combined with the multiple aspects from the rolling hills, has given Gérard Gauby the freedom to experiment and maximise the potential of each grape variety.

  2019 Petit Chablis, Domaine Jean Goulley

  Domaine Jean Goulley was formed in 1986 by Jean Goulley and is now run by his granddaughter Maud. The Domaine is well regarded for their mineral style of Chablis’s that have a purity and vivacity that pays homage to the Chablis of the past.

   In the glass, this 2019 Petit Chablis is vivacious with aromas of peach, apricot and ripe nectarine.  The palate is crisp and mineral with the aromas translating to the palate flavour.  The finish is the typical of the Goulley style – mouthwatering.

  Maud and her family believe in the ethos of organic farming along with that of minimal intervention; all of their vineyards are farmed organically. The vineyard is situated on the left bank of the River Sereine, where the vines are planted with an easterly orientation at an average altitude of 210 metres. The double Guyot trained vines are between 25 to 30 years old and are grown in Kimmeridgian soils, which are rich in clay and limestone with fossilised seashells. There is also the presence of Cailloux, large pebbles which help to promote ripening by absorbing the heat of the day and then radiating it at night. The vines are planted to a density of 5,700 vines per hectare and yields are kept to a maximum of 60 hectolitres per hectare. At Domaine Jean Goulley, they believe in highlighting terroir and produce their wines in an unoaked style, allowing them to reveal the purity, minerality and vitality of the soil.

  In the glass, this 2020 Petit Chablis is clean, fresh and appealing, with ripe crunchy green apple fruit and crisp acid keeping everything vibrant. An early drinking Petit Chablis that  will give a lot of pleasure over the next 3-5 years.

  2021 Sancerre, J. de Villebois

  A textured and richly flavoured Sancerre with intense herbaceous, gooseberry and citrus aromas, beautifully balanced by a vibrant and refreshing crisp palate.

  The Sancerre appellation in Central France surrounds the eponymous town, which sits atop a hill overlooking the River Loire. The grapes for this cuvée are grown in vineyards which are located on these hilly slopes and are planted across the three main soil types of Sancerre. Les Caillottes, which is made up of a high proportion of stony fragments of coarse Kimmeridgian limestone upon a clay subsoil and the wines from these soils impart aromatic structure and freshness; Les Terres Blanches which are made up of Kimmeridgian marl and is extremely rich in fossilised shellfish and has the distinctive characteristic of turning white when it dries, hence its local name, which translates as ‘white earth’. These wines from this soil offer complexity, opulence and great aromatic finesse. Finally the flinty Silex soils which impart minerality; all three soils types have the common thread of a high proportion of clay.

  2015 Les Allées de Cantemerle, Château Cantemerle

  A traditional and deeply coloured Bordeaux, with a delicate, elegant bouquet of blackcurrant and tobacco through to a smooth, silky palate with a touch of raspberry on the finish.  This second wine of Château Cantemerle comes mainly from the Château’s young vines and is produced in the same way as its elder brother. Les Allées de Cantemerle has the same great personality as the Grand Vin, but is ready to drink earlier.

  Situated in the Haut-Médoc, the Château de Cantermerle vineyard covers 91 hectares of vines. The soils are silica-gravel, which are a result of a thousand-year-old erosion of the Pyrenees by the River Garonne and form one of the fundamental elements of this quality vineyard. The soils are poor in nutrients, so the vines ‘struggle’, resulting in grapes with a high concentration of flavour. In addition, the small pebbles in the soil provide a filter and contribute to the grape’s maturity by reflecting the sun’s rays during the day and retaining the heat during the cooler nights. The vines have an average age of 30 years.

  2022 Chablis, Domaine Sébastien Dampt

  Sebastien Dampt is fast rising to the top echelons of Chablis winemaking.  Year upon year, he delivers remarkable wines that are an ode to the regional terroir, reflecting both their devotion to winemaking and the rich heritage of Chablis. The domain is undoubtedly a perfect embodiment of tradition that meets modernity in wine-making.

  This 2022 Chablis is made from five parcels of old vines (40-60 years old) that surround the Domaine in the village of Milly.   It’s seriously good Chablis, bone dry, chalky, with notes of Granny Smith apple and citrus fruits and a firm, mineral finish.

  In terms of vinification, Sébastien keeps it simple. His approach is traditional, as he learned from his father and grandfather. In Chablis, this means fermentation and maturation in steel tanks. Sébastien does not use winemaking techniques such as battonage or wood ageing; he is all about pure grape and terroir expression. The wine does undergo the usual malolactic fermentation in Chablis, which rounds out the acids just a little more.
