With its red colour with purplish tints, this Chateau Grand Pey Lescours will give you a lot of pleasure. Very fragrant, it is adorned with notes of black fruits and undergrowth. The 70% Merlot gives this wine a wonderfully soft plushness. Flavours of black cherries and blackberries and bramble fruit. The remainder of the blend is Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, which adds structure and and earthy complexity. A true classic. It will perfectly accompany rich pies, red meat dishes (lamb, coq au vin, etc.) but also white meat (duck with orange, for example).

The vines are trained according to a Double Guyot trellising system and are green harvested in order to concentrate the flavours in the remaining fruit. Despite initially challenging weather, the 2018 Bordeaux vintage was excellent. The winter was unusually wet and remained so throughout spring. Hail also struck some vineyards during this period. However, conditions eased, allowing for a successful flowering followed by a particularly hot, dry summer with surprisingly cool nights, from June through to September. September brought welcome rains, reviving the vines. Harvest took place under ideal conditions, producing small, thick-skinned and highly concentrated berries, resulting in rich wines, with balancing acidity and a fresh, fruity appeal.

The grapes for this wine were carefully selected from small plots. The Cabernet Sauvignon comes from estate vineyards planted in the early 1990s, in Pirque and Los Morros, in Alto Maipo. The Pirque vineyard contains alluvial soils with medium composition with a high level of stone content, whereas Los Morros consists of soils of colluvial-alluvial origin. Both soil types have medium to low fertility, good depth of 1.5 to 2 metres and good drainage; ideal conditions to produce wines of character. The Carménère grapes come from an estate vineyard in the Colchagua Valley planted in the mid-1980s. The clay loam soil textures are dominant which is ideal for this variety as they retain soil moisture ensuring optimum and prolonged ripening. The Carignan grapes come from a rain-fed vineyard planted in 1958, in the Maule Valley. It contains soils with clay texture, high quartz content, subsoil of granitic origin and good drainage.
