2023 Pouilly-Fumé, J. de Villebois

    £2795

The subtle combination of smoky and ripe fruit aromas preludes a palate of candied pineapple, peach and mango flavours. Elegant and fresh, with the characteristic smoky note of a great Pouilly Fumé.

Pouilly-Fumé is the Sauvignon Blanc appellation located on the Right Bank of the Loire River. The appellation was created in 1937 originally as Blanc Fumé de Pouilly. Pouilly- Fumé takes its name from Pouilly-sur-Loire, the village from which the wines originate; while ‘Fume’ refers to Blanc Fumé, the local synonym for Sauvignon Blanc. Fumé translates as ‘smoky’, which denotes the struck gunflint notes that characterise the wines. The Sauvignon Blanc grapes that produced this cuvée are grown on the main Pouilly Fumé terroirs of Villiers and Barrois, where the soils are made up of limestone, marls with oyster shells and clayey-flint ‘Silex’ soils. It is these flinty ‘Silex’ soils, which impart the characteristic smoky flavours in the wine.

2022 South Oaks Sauvignon Blanc, Auntsfield

    £2895

The 2022 South Oaks Barrel Fermented Sauvignon Blanc from Auntsfield Estate is a beautifully textured and refined expression of Marlborough’s Southern Valleys, showcasing both the region’s pioneering history and its continued innovation. Auntsfield proudly carries the legacy of Marlborough’s first vineyard and winery, established in 1892, and remains family-owned and operated with an unwavering commitment to site-expressive wines. Their Single Block collection represents the pinnacle of this philosophy, wines crafted from small, distinctive parcels that consistently produce fruit of exceptional character and depth.

The South Oaks block, a mere two hectares nestled at the southernmost, elevated edge of the estate, lies beside a stand of old oak trees and is defined by its unique, free-draining soils of crushed Greywacke rock. This terroir lends a distinct mineral tension and linear structure to the wine, setting it apart from classic Marlborough styles.

In the glass, the 2022 South Oaks Sauvignon Blanc is fragrant and evocative, offering layers of rock melon, mandarin peel, and lime leaf, intertwined with dry herbs, nougat, and a stony slate character. On the palate, it is taut, fresh, and impeccably balanced, combining dense fruit weight with vibrant acidity and a chalky minerality that drives the wine through to an elegant, sustained finish. The mouthfeel is seamless and intense, offering both power and finesse.

2021 Barrel Fermented Sauvignon Blanc, Lismore

    £3095

Lismore Estate is based in Greyton within the Overberg region of the Western Cape of South Africa. It’s here with the Sonderend mountains as a backdrop that winemaker & proprietor Samantha O’Keefe makes her fabulous wines. ‘ I had a farm in Africa….’ The opening line of Karen Blixen’s classic memoir Out Of Africa comes to mind when you hear Samantha’s amazing story.

We love barrel-fermented Sauvignon Blanc at Wine Republic and this beauty is made in an “oxidative” style using old 500-litre barrels for 70% of the fermentation and maturation bringing forward richness, intense fruit and complexity. 30% of the wine is fermented and aged in 1500-litre concrete egg tanks to enhance the rich palate texture and minerality. In both the barrels and the eggs, extended less contact adds complexity and a richer, creamy texture which works beautifully with the bright citrus and fresh herb notes and salty minerality from the grape.

2022 Sancerre ‘Les Poitevinnes’, Domaine Serge Laloue

    £3300

Serge Laloue has always been one of our favourite winemakers in the Loire, making incredible Sancerre. His ‘Les Poitevinnes’ Cuvee is an elegant and complex expression of Sancerre, with concentrated Mirabelle plum and peach underpinned by delicate hints of liquorice, anise and mineral notes. The lovely rounded texture on the palate is beautifully framed by mineral freshness.

The grapes are grown in 0.55 hectares of vineyard within the estate, from vines with an average age of 30 to 35 years. The vines face a south-easterly orientation, maximising exposure to the sun to assist the ripening of the berries. The soils are predominantly calcareous clay, which typically has a high limestone content, producing elegant and textured wines with distinctive minerality. The vineyard is currently in conversion to organic status, a natural progression for the Laloue family as the farming methods used over many years have followed these principles. Vineyard management techniques include ploughing the soil instead of using herbicides, growing cover crops between the rows of vines and sexual confusion of predators, to maintain the health of the vines and the biodiversity of the environment.

2022 Sancerre Cuvee Silex, Domaine Serge Laloue

    £3495

Serge Laloue has always been one of our favourite winemakers in the Loire, making incredible Sancerre. This we think is their finest Cuvee, crafted by Franck Laloue the Sancerre Silex has intense aromas of smoky graphite with mineral notes of oyster shell that are complemented by zesty orange peel and Mirabelle plum. This fresh, supple cuvée delivers concentrated citrus flavours through to a bright and uplifting mineral finish.

The grapes come from a three-hectare estate vineyard, where the vines have an average age of 40 years, producing low yields of concentrated fruit. The vines face a south-easterly orientation, maximising exposure to the sun to assist ripening of the berries. The soils are ‘silex’, a flinty clay that produces elegant wines with distinctive graphite and mineral characters.

2015 Lune d’Or, Clos des Lunes

    £4250

Located in Sauternes, on one of the greatest white wine terroirs in France, the Clos des Lunes is a magnificent rolling vineyard planted with old sémillon and sauvignon blanc vines. On very old vines, some perfectly golden clusters are chosen and delicately sorted grain by grain, by expert hands.

The wine is pale gold in the glass – which is rather apt considering the name! The nose is very expressive with fragrances of tangerine, lemon and grapefruit with wafts of fresh hay and chamomile. Together these aromas give a mouthwatering sensation. This leads into the racy palate that is complex, textural – preserved lemons, stone fruits and a delicious passion fruit taste. The finish is long luscious and minerally.

    £4250

In the glass Striking, aromatic notes of flint, blackcurrant and lemon lead to a mineral-rich palate. Beautifully balanced with a crisp, refreshing finish.

The Sauvignon Blanc grapes for the Silex cuvée are grown in the famous ‘Silex’ soils of Sancerre, which are made up of clay-siliceous soils composed of flint (Silex), clay and siliceous conglomerates. The sought-after Silex soils make up just 20% of the Sancerre appellation and are considered as ‘early-ripening soil’ as the flinty stones capture the heat from the sun during the day and radiate it at night, which helps to accelerate the maturity of the grapes. This is beneficial is such a cool, continental climate, where the Sauvignon Blanc retains its hallmark acidity, as it offers balance to the wines. The grapes for this cuvée come from hillside plots, where the vines are over 35 years old.

    The Explore 4 ‘Sauvignon Blanc’

    £9340

Each Explore 4 case tackles a new theme: This one is a selection of Sauvignon Blanc that won’t break the bank.

Sauvignon is the most popular white wine in the UK and for good reason, it’s easy to drink and you know what you are getting.

But there is another more adventurous side to Sauvignon Blanc, the one where winemakers push the envelope in terms of vineyard locations, the use of oak and wild yeasts. These are the ones we focus on with this selection.

    Here’s what’s in the case:

2021 Outer Limits Sauvignon Blanc, Montes, Aconcagua Valley, Chile

The Outer Limits wines were born out of Aurelio Montes’ desire to push Chilean viticulture in a new direction. The 45 hectare Zapallar Vineyard in the Aconcagua Valley was Montes’ first venture into the ‘outer limits’. Due to the balance and concentration in the Outer Limits wines, they can be enjoyed now or allowed to age for a few years, rewarding with a wonderfully complex bouquet.

2020 ‘Summer’ Wild Ferment Sauvignon Blanc, Harry Hartman, Western Cape, South Africa

his knockout wild Ferment Sauvignon Blanc from Harry Hartman Wines is made from fruit picked in the premium regions of Elgin and Bot River. Elgin fruit has a higher level of acidity adding to the more citrus notes and making the wine more linear. Botrivier fruit is more rounded, with bigger tropical notes.

2019 Taihoa Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc, Astrolabe, Marlborough, New Zealand

This is a unique New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, the fruit for this wine is grown by Paddy and Anna Trolove at Taihoa Vineyard on Marlborough’s southern Kēkerengū coast. It is an outlier, both geographically and in a winemaking sense, to the typical sauvignon blanc wines of Marlborough; it is all about complexity, texture and age-worthiness.

2019 Sancerre Cuvee Silex, Domaine Serge Laloue, Loire, France

Serge Laloue has always been one of our favourite winemakers in the Loire, making incredible Sancerre. • 2017 Dolce, Far Niente Wine Republic Heros Dessert Wine, Port & Dessert Wine

    2017 Dolce, Far Niente

    £12000

Dolce is Napa’s true Sauternes-style dessert wine. Dolce embraces the pursuit of perfection in the art of late harvest winemaking. Created in 1985 by the partners of Far Niente, Dolce stands as a standard-bearer for this type of wine in America. With a classic blend of late harvest Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc inspired by the Sauternes region, Dolce is the only American winery dedicated to producing a single late harvest wine.

After nearly three years in French oak, this luxurious vintage shows lifted and youthful aromas of orange zest, vanilla bean and butterscotch with subtle notes of minerality and oak-derived spices. The entry is juicy, and Dolce’s signature texture is lively and enduring on the palate leading to a mouthwatering finish. Flavours of orange, pear and dried apricot mingle together with rich caramel notes and hints of minerals that make this vintage a delicious expression of the season’s exceptional ripeness.

Dolce’s 20 acres of vineyard are located in Coombsville, east of the city of Napa, and are situated at the base of the Vaca Mountains, which define the eastern border of the valley. The volcanic soil is loose and well-drained, and the west-facing vineyard is protected from the prevailing winds so that the damp, morning fog of autumn (a very important factor in the development of Botrytis cinerea) hangs longer amongst the vines, often until midday. A combination of high humidity followed by drying conditions encourages, but does not guarantee, the growth of Botrytis. As it develops, its coverage is seemingly random with individual berries succumbing to Botrytis at different rates, if at all.

2020 Blanc Etc, Domaine Didier Dagueneau

    £12700

Pouilly Fumé and Sancerre are the global benchmarks for Sauvignon Blanc, and there is no bigger name or more highly regarded producer in the area than Domaine Didier Dagueneau. Now under the guidance of Didier’s talented son Louis-Benjamin, the wines still follow his ethos that authentic Pouilly Fumé requires healthy fruit from low yielding, old vines to produce the purest, and most intense and vibrantly fresh wine. That’s not to say these wines are typical of the appellation. Given the severely low yields and approach to élevage, Dagueneau wines emphasise a creamy texture rather than bracing acidity, and combine mineral flavours with exotic fruits to supreme effect.

Previously labelled as Blanc Fumé de Pouilly, now reborn as Blanc Etc… and looking better than ever. Generally speaking this is the most approachable wine in the range, and since Louis-Benjamin came aboard the wine is now far closer in quality and class to the other releases. While each of the other wine focus on a single soil type or terroir, Blanc etc… blends some young vine parcels on their Saint-Andelain hill with two parcels planted on flinty clay and limestone white clay soils nearby. It was fermented in a mix of new and three-four year old barrels and then matured in both wood and tank.

2020 Pouilly Fume Pur Sang, Domaine Didier Dagueneau

    £14900

Pur Sang is a superstar in the Dagueneau cellar, and is widely considered one of the great white wines of the world.

Pur Sang translates as thoroughbred, this wine coming from a densely planted, 30-year-old vineyard called La Folie, five kilometres north of Saint-Andélain. Hidden between two parcels of woodland, the vineyard – whose name literally translates as `madness` – is named for the local farmers who thought Didier Dagueneau was crazy when he purchased the land, which was not a vineyard and was full of huge boulders. It was not even registered as part of the Pouilly-Fumé appellation. But Didier had done his homework, as not only was La Folie an historical Pouilly vineyard, but its vein of pure flint, as well as its gently sloping, south/south-east exposure, made it potentially one of Pouilly’s finest. Very pale colour, aromas recall grilled pink grapefruit with a hint of white peach – beautifully expressive. Palate is full, having a rich, floral, complex, aromatic core, creamy texture, and a satisfyingly long finish.
