  Ben Prins, Muratie’s winemaker until 1987, was as unique as the wines he produced. A hard-working, no-nonsense kind of a man–quiet, contemplative and exceptionally particular–he was both a perfectionist and a traditionalist. It was said that he knew wine like the back of his hand– or, rather, foot, given that he considered shoes to be ‘unnecessary novelties’!

  In his honour, this Port-style liqueur wine is made from traditional Port varieties (Tinta Barocca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Francisca and Souzão) that were planted in a single vineyard in the 1970s to produce a unique ‘field blend’.

  On the nose, floral notes of violets and roses entice along with Christmas spice and plum pudding. Each sip is deeply rich, with flavours ranging from Kirsch-macerated black cherries to dark chocolate-enrobed hazelnuts. There are also savoury undertones – truffles and tobacco – with brisk acidity and warming alcohol in harmony with the lithely powerful structure. Seamlessly integrated after two years in old 225l French oak barrels, this world- class wine should reward contemplation for at least another two decades.

  This white wine is made from the dark-skinned red variety Nerello Mascalese.

  In the glass it has complex aromas of pineapple, wild floral notes and spice that combine with hints of liquorice, herbs and mint.  These aromas give way to a fresh and fruity palate. Dry and full flavoured with mineral notes leading to a satisfying finish.

  The grapes for this wine come from a 15 hectare vineyard is situated in the Contrada Feudo S. Anastasia at an elevation of approximately 620 metres above sea level, where warm days and cool nights encourage a long ripening period concentrating the flavours in the grapes while retaining balancing acidity. The vines are grown in volcanic soils, which are rich in minerals and fossils. The soil is permeable to air and water and is rich in pumice stone and microelements, which allow the plants to produce a complex aromatic profile.

The climate is Mediterranean, strongly influenced by cooling coastal breezes combined with mountain freshness from the foothills of the Pyrenees which balance the hot, arid summers. The soils are made up of alluvial marls of the Roussillon plain, along with black schist; the latter imparts great aromatic complexity to the wines, characterised by freshness and notes of the garrigue. Each year, Palmer & Co adds red wines from the new harvest, which have been barrel-aged and typically amounts to 6-7%, to compensate for the wine drawn off. This perpetual reserve was started 40 years ago and is kept in stainless steel tanks. It forms an extraordinary library expressing a unique combination of red fruit and spice aromas and flavours.   In the heart of the wine appellation, D.O.Q. Priorat, between the villages of Bellmunt and Falset, Pinord makes its wines from the grapes grown on the 18 hectares (44 acres) of vineyard of their Mas Blanc property.

  Due to its special location, the Mas Blanc property has been caringly transformed by building various kilometres of vine terraces and by planting, cultivating and looking after the traditional grape varieties of Grenache and Carignan (Garnatxa and Carinyena as they are known locally) as well as introducing new varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot. Thus, a wild space has been turned into a model vineyard, with steeply sloping terraces which mean that virtually all vineyard work must be done by hand.

  Ripe, dense black fruits, vanilla and chocolate aromas envelop the full-bodied, but elegant palate, which is rich and very silky with a long, smooth finish.  The ageing in oak is noticeable, well blended with fruity aromas which give it finesse and complexity.

  The grapes are sourced from seven different plots of vineyards, where the soils are made up of a slate known locally as ‘licorella’. Slate soils are known for their heat-retention properties, which encourages the vines to reach maturity. The vines are cultivated organically and harvested by hand.
