£1950Add to BasketTahbilk Shiraz is sourced from nearly 30 hectares of vines planted at various times from the 1930s through the early 2000s. Made using traditional Tahbilk techniques; fermentation takes place in 150 + year old open vats, before maturation in French and American oak for 18 months before bottling. The resultant releases are noted as being fruit-driven wines of much flavour and substance, proven over the years to develop added character when cellared. Varietally expressive with ample plum and blackberry fruits, there is warm earth and spicy savouriness that immediately appeals with a backbone of fine, opulent tannins and a rich, persistent finish.
Tahbilk’s vineyards are grouped along the banks of the Goulburn River, a branch of it which flows through the estate. The vines are grown at around 134 metres elevation of gently undulating and flat terrain. The soils are sandy loam with ferric oxide content, which vary from very fine sand near the anabranch to denser loams on the plains. Tahbilk has Shiraz vineyards dating back from the 1860s to the 1990s. The oldest surviving block is the ‘1860 block’; planted on its own roots in sandy soils, which has made it impossible for phylloxera to colonise the vine roots.

The fruit comes from two distinct Pinot Noir vineyards: Danny’s Vineyard and Grava, two of the most northerly plantings in Monterey County. The vineyards nestle up to the Gabilan Mountain Range on the eastern side of the Salinas Valley; approximately 10 miles directly across from the Santa Lucia Highlands. The marine influence of the nearby Monterey Bay and the morning fog which clears for the afternoon sun, results in a cool mesoclimate and a long hang-time for the fruit. The grapes reflect the cool climate character, with complex aromatics and flavours and natural balancing acidity.

2020 Etna Bianco, Pietradolce
£1995Add to BasketMade from ancient Pre-phylloxera Carricante vines grown on the northern slopes of Mount Etna, 800 metres above sea level. Carricante takes its name from carico, meaning ‘charged, loaded, burdened’ which refers to the abundant fruit on the vine.
In the glass this wine displays a piercingly mineral aroma; salty, herbaceous, grassy notes combine with soft white peach and a flinty, stony-inflected tang. The wine is crisp, lean with vibrant. Its racy acidity provides a fresh, clear and linear mouthfeel. Lemon juice and lemon peel lead to a long and refreshing finish.

The grapes come from the AOP Côtes de Roussillon, where the vineyards are located within a natural amphitheatre open to the Mediterranean Sea, and are surrounded by mountain ranges. The climate is Mediterranean, strongly influenced by cooling coastal breezes combined with freshness from the foothills of the Pyrenees, which temper the hot, arid summers. The vines are grown on the Roussillon plains where the soils are made up of alluvial marls with black schist, which imparts great aromatic complexity to the wines, characterised by notes of black fruits, garrigue and freshness. The Fox Gordon estate vineyards are located in the Adelaide Hills, overlooking McLaren Vale. Nestled in a natural amphitheatre, the vines are planted at an elevation of 380 metres above sea level, where cooling breezes from the ocean less than 18 kilometres away influences the microclimate. The vines are approximately 14 years old and are planted at the top of a hill at an altitude of 480 metres above sea level. It is a rocky site, which suits this very vigorous variety as the site has very little topsoil, slowing down the vigour.

The grapes for this wine come from 2 vineyards. The 1st is situated in the cool climate sub-region of Red Hill at an altitude of 146 metres above sea level. The estate vines are 14 years old and they provide 50% of the fruit for this wine. The remaining 50% comes from a contracted grower in Moorooduc which is a slightly warmer site and adds complexity and a layered dimension to the wine. The Mornington Peninsula is influenced by the cooling maritime climate, which helps the grapes to retain acidity as they ripen. The soils are generally red basalt, which stores sufficient water supplies to keep the vine irrigated through the warm summer season. These soils are the result of ancient lava flows, are iron-rich, moderately fertile and drain surface water easily. This results in healthy vines with deep root systems, producing high-quality berries that translate into intense, concentrated wines.
