A medium-bodied Bordeaux showing concentrated fruit aromas backed by delicate woody notes. In the mouth is has good freshness, while the structure shows high-quality tannins. Nicely balanced, velvety and powerful. The vines are cultivated according to “la lutte raisonnée”, using sustainable agricultural methods and reducing the amount of chemicals in order to respect the land and its environment. The vines are grown in clay and silt soils.

The soils offer a good balance of water retention to nourish the vines throughout the summer and ample drainage if required. Gentle sea breezes come from the Adriatic Sea which keep the vines dry and healthy, while the Alps protect the vineyards from cold, northerly winds. Warm days and cool nights offer the perfect combination to allow slow maturation of the grapes, maintaining beautiful balance between natural acidity and sugar levels.

2020 Shiraz, Tahbilk
£1950Add to BasketTahbilk Shiraz is sourced from nearly 30 hectares of vines planted at various times from the 1930s through the early 2000s. Made using traditional Tahbilk techniques; fermentation takes place in 150 + year old open vats, before maturation in French and American oak for 18 months before bottling. The resultant releases are noted as being fruit-driven wines of much flavour and substance, proven over the years to develop added character when cellared. Varietally expressive with ample plum and blackberry fruits, there is warm earth and spicy savouriness that immediately appeals with a backbone of fine, opulent tannins and a rich, persistent finish.

The vines are grown at around 134 metres elevation of gently undulating and flat terrain. Tahbilk has Shiraz vineyards dating back from the 1860s to the 1990s. The oldest surviving block is the ‘1860 block’; planted on its own roots in sandy soils, which has made it impossible for phylloxera to colonise the vine roots.

£1995Add to BasketMade from ancient Pre-phylloxera Carricante vines grown on the northern slopes of Mount Etna, 800 metres above sea level. Carricante takes its name from carico, meaning ‘charged, loaded, burdened’ which refers to the abundant fruit on the vine.
In the glass this wine displays a piercingly mineral aroma; salty, herbaceous, grassy notes combine with soft white peach and a flinty, stony-inflected tang. The wine is crisp, lean with vibrant. Its racy acidity provides a fresh, clear and linear mouthfeel. Lemon juice and lemon peel lead to a long and refreshing finish.

The grapes come from the AOP Côtes de Roussillon, where the vineyards are located within a natural amphitheatre open to the Mediterranean Sea, and are surrounded by mountain ranges. The climate is Mediterranean, strongly influenced by cooling coastal breezes combined with freshness from the foothills of the Pyrenees, which temper the hot, arid summers. The vines are grown on the Roussillon plains where the soils are made up of alluvial marls with black schist, which imparts great aromatic complexity to the wines, characterised by notes of black fruits, garrigue and freshness.
