Fruit was predominantly sourced from two mature, dry grown vineyards; Timber Creek, in the Wilyabrup subregion; and Victory Point in the Treeton subregion of Margaret River and was supplemented with a small amount of Malbec from the Stevens Road vineyard in Wallcliffe. The resulting blend from these vineyards has married beautifully, proving again that sometimes ‘the whole is greater than the sum of its parts’.

  The Reserve range continues to be the best of the best of what Xanadu can produce in a given vintage. This is the 11th consecutive release of Reserve Chardonnay, 100% of the fruit for this wine is from the estate’s oldest iconic Chardonnay vineyard, the Lagan Estate.

  The bouquet of this powerful, yet elegant Chardonnay displays fresh pear and lemon/lime characters with underlying hints of roasted cashews and frangipani adding complexity.  The sophisticated palate is medium-bodied with a wonderful purity of fruit, offering pear puree, zesty grapefruit flavours and a quartz-like, almost crystalline, mineral edge to the structure.   2018 Wolta Wolta Clare Valley Riesling, Loosen Barry

  The friendship between Ernst Loosen, of the Dr. Loosen Estate in Germany, and Peter Barry, of Jim Barry Wines, Australia, began in 1995 at the London Wine Fair. Forged out of mutual respect for the noble variety Riesling, this collaboration of ideas pays homage to the wine making techniques used by the Loosen family for generations, and the vineyard practices of the Barry family.

  The German-style Riesling made in Australia is called Wolta Wolta, (Aboriginal for ‘good water’) in honour of one the Barry family’s most significant and successful land purchases, which later became known as Lodge Hill. The Australian-style Riesling, made with grapes from the Erdener Treppchen Vineyard in Germany, is called Walhalla, (pronounced Valhalla) named after the majestic hall ruled over by Odin in Norse mythology.

  It was no simple task for an Australian winemaker to make a German-style Riesling and vice versa, but when each winemaker can draw on forty years of experience of their counterpart, the possibilities are genuinely intriguing, and even though Peter and Tom Barry were uncertain they could make such a different style of Riesling, they were delighted with the outcome.

  This project is not about sales. This is a project of passion, designed to test the skills, explore the possibilities, and hopefully, get people thinking about Riesling in a different way.

  2013 Voices of Angels Shiraz, Charles Melton Wines

  This 2013 single vineyard Shiraz from the legendary Charles Melton is sweetly perfumed with just a hint of whole bunch character. Great density in the bouquet. Not wildly fruity, just intensely perfumed rounded sweet, almost Burgundian palate. Rich and round right to the edges. Spicy complexity in the mouth feel and firm tannins to finish. Enough complexity and weight to see out a decade or two at least.

  This wine is sourced from the Mount Pleasant vineyard which sits on the boundary of Eden Valley and the Adelaide Hills. Technically, this wine is from the Adelaide Hills, but spiritually the fruit is Eden Valley.

  2017 The Old Bloke and The Three Young Blonds, d’Arenberg

  A mix of gnarly, old Shiraz partnered with youthful, exotic and fragrant white varieties. The Shiraz offers a nose brimming with dark, earthen fruits, woody spices and rich blackberry aromas. Viognier adds fragrance in the form of apricot, ginger and florals, Roussanne delivers an exotic, dried almond and papaya note, and the Marsanne contributes pistachio and yellow stonefruit.

  The palate is generous, with layers of fruit characters that ebb and flow through the entire length. The tannin structure is unique, thanks to the mingling of red and white phenolics. The rustic, chunky, mid-palate Shiraz tannins are tempered by the lusciousness of the white varieties, the finish enhanced by the addition of fragrant, flowery tannins, mainly on account of the Viognier and more nutty, walnut skin texture, from the Roussanne.

  A complex and alluring wine that evolves in the glass. So much individual character and much to take in, but somehow we are left with a sense of harmony between the old bloke and the three young blondes.

  2002 Charles Melton Sparkling Red, Charles Melton

  Charlie Melton uses the traditional Australian technique for their sparkling red, as pioneered by Seppelts at Great Western. The base wine is aged for around two years or so in oak and then tirage bottled and left on lees for up to four years. This gives a complex aromatic of fruit sweetness and classic autolysis character and fine bubble. An important factor is the liquering dosage as this degree of sweetness ensures they will develop for decades.

  This 2002 Sparkling red was disgorged in August 2005 so has had a further 16 years in bottle.   It is an incredible bottle of wine and still has decades to go!   Rich black cherry and plum on the nose with a delightful charry element. It has a fine mousse with powerful red and black fruits. Spicy, dense with a beguiling sweetness. It has a tight, dense core of rich fruit. Off-dry and has fabulous intensity and complexity.  Fabulous!

  Charles Melton Wines has produced premium Barossa red wines since 1984. Charlie and a small band of Barossa winemakers turned their winemaking efforts to what was then considered a couple of unfashionable varieties: Shiraz and Grenache. These wines were initially styled on those from the Rhône but are now considered leading examples of the varieties in their own right. The wines have always attracted national and international recognition, and an enduring commitment to dry-farmed vineyards and careful crafting of the wine will ensure that this continues.

  This phenomenal wine was made from dry farmed old vine Shiraz, has a very deep colour with a toasty nose – some high-quality oak lifting the bouquet. A hint of sweet plums, strawberries poking through. Good firm tannins but with sufficient middle palate weight to match. The spiciness shows through onto the palate with a food-friendly savouriness being knit together with the traditional Barossa richness and sweet fruit finish.

  The 2002 Shiraz from Standish Vineyard is a remarkable wine with a rich history and a complex profile. The grapes were sourced from 89-year-old vines, which is quite significant as older vines tend to produce fruit with more concentrated flavours. This Shiraz spent 30 months aging in French barriques (barrels), specifically ones that were 3-5 years old. This aging process contributes to the complexity and depth of the wine’s flavour. It has a very deep garnet colour, indicating its maturity and concentration. The wine offers intense aromas of dried plum and warm blackberries, layered with notes of dusty earth, menthol, coffee, tree bark, black truffle, tobacco, and liquorice. This combination of aromas suggests a rich and savoury character with a balance of fruit and earthy elements. The 2002 Standish Shiraz is highly regarded and reflects the quality of the Barossa Valley region in South Australia, known for producing some of the world’s finest Shiraz wines.

  2016 Mount Edelstone Shiraz, Henschke

  The Mount Edelstone vineyard, situated in the Eden Valley, was planted in 1912 by Ronald Angas, a descendant of George Fife Angas, who founded South Australia. Unusual for its time, it was planted solely to shiraz. The ancient 500-million-year-old soils on the vineyard are deep red-brown clay-loam to clay, resulting in low yields from the nearly 100-year-old dry-grown ungrafted Centenarian vines. First bottled as a single-vineyard wine in 1952, it became recognised as one of Australia’s greatest Shiraz wines.

  2016 is the 64th release of Mount Edelstone.  In the glass, it is deep crimson in colour with violet hues. Fragrant, spicy aromas of black pepper, sage, bay leaf and star anise are interwoven with vibrant plum, blackberry and blueberry, and gentle notes of tarragon and cedar. The palate is complex and textured with rich and concentrated flavours of mulberry, blackberry and plum, layered with sage, black pepper and star anise. The finish is beautifully balanced, with long, velvety tannins and excellent depth.

  Amon-Ra Shiraz is an iconic wine that epitomises Ben Glaetzer’s passion to create wines that are full flavoured, multi layered and intense but still elegant, stylish and finely balanced.

  Made from exceptional old vine fruit was sourced from the famed Ebenezer sub district at the northern tip of the Barossa Valley. These old vines are between 100-110 years old.

  in the glass this wine has a perfumed nose, with layers of violet, spice, liquorice and vanilla. The palate flavours are very pronounced, with a very spicy back palate. Mouthfilling flavours of black pepper, blackberry, spice, and plum overlaid with cedar. The tannins are fine, yet slightly chalky but perfectly balanced. Very long aftertaste of black pepper, spice and plum.

  In Egyptian mythology, Amon-Ra is considered to be the king of all gods. The temple of Amon-Ra was believed to be the first temple to ever plant a monoculture vineyard to produce wine for the citizens of the temple.

  The eye on front of the label is the all-seeing eye of Horus or wedjat (“whole one”) – a powerful Egyptian symbol of protection. It is represented as a figure with six parts, corresponding to what Egyptians regarded as the six senses; touch, taste, hearing, sight, smell and thought.

  This is one of the most iconic wines in Australia and world renowned as an exceptional example of cool climate Shiraz.  The Graveyard Vineyard is the jewel in the Brokenwood crown, responsible for the company’s flagship wine.
