  • 2020 L’Orange de l’Ou’, Château de l’OuOrange Wine

    2020 L’Orange de l’Ou’, Château de l’Ou

    £3700

A refreshing orange wine with intriguing aromas of candied orange peel, citrus and a touch of curry spice. On the palate, delicious notes of grapefruit, peach and delicate ginger lead to a long, crisp finish.

The Muscat à Petit Grains grapes come from the Côtes Catalans, which is the principle IGP allowing only mono-varietal wines. The vines thrive at an altitude of 325 metres elevation in the Haute Vallée de l’Agly, in the Roussillon region. The climate is Mediterranean, strongly influenced by cooling coastal breezes combined with mountain freshness from the foothills of the Pyrenees which balance the hot, arid summers. The terroir is made up of a mosaic of black schist soils, which date back to the Cretaceous period. The schistous marl produces shallow soils, which force the vines to send their roots deep in search of water and nutrients. The vineyard is certified organic.

  • 2018 Rioja L4GD4 ‘Vino De Pueblo’ Laguardia, BadiolaRed Wine

2018 Rioja L4GD4 ‘Vino De Pueblo’ Laguardia, Badiola

    £3750

Badiola is the creation of 2 Masters of Wine, Andreas Kubach and Sam Harrop along with txakoli producer Gorka Izagirre.   Andreas and Sam along with Winemaker Tao Plantón craft modern Rioja wines with an emphasis on-site rather than how long it has aged in an oak barrel.  The winemaking philosophy is to obtain very pure, fresh and well-textured wines that reflect their origin.

This 2018 L4GD4 is a perfumed wine with delicate floral aromas of wild strawberries and violet giving way to a juicy palate with velvety tannins and an elegant finish.   Current regulations in Rioja only permit the use of a village name on the label by the location of the winery (i.e. the building and not the vineyards) thus the wine from the Laguardia vineyards is cleverly called L4GD4!

The grapes come from carefully selected parcels around the charming village of Laguardia, in Rioja Alavesa. Laguardia is situated on average at 640 metres above sea level and is open to the Ebro Valley with exposed sites. The mesoclimate here results in earlier ripening than other villages and produces approachable wines that are elegant, light and perfumed. The bush vines are planted in limestone soils and are cultivated with respect for the environment, using minimal sprays of copper and sulphur only when required.

  • 2021 Estate Chardonnay Sleepy Hollow Vineyard, Talbott Wine Republic Heros White Wine

2021 Estate Chardonnay Sleepy Hollow Vineyard, Talbott

    £3750

Talbott Vineyards is defined by its iconic Sleepy Hollow Vineyard, where the conditions are ideal for exceptional, cool-climate Chardonnay.  Located in the northern area of the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA in Monterey County, it has been designated one of California’s Grand Cru vineyards by Wine Enthusiast in 2016, for its ability to produce exceptional wines year after year. The vines were first planted in 1972 at an elevation of 168 metres and cover 228 hectares. Due to the proximity of the Pacific Ocean and the east-to-northeasterly exposure, cooling fog and frequent ocean breezes temper the warm sunshine, giving Sleepy Hollow one of the longest growing seasons in California and allowing each grape to develop concentrated flavours.

A bright, elegant Chardonnay, with aromas of Pink Lady apple, juicy pineapple, pear and caramelised brown sugar. Unctuous and opulent on the palate, with refreshing acidity offering beautiful balance to the ripe tropical fruit.

  • 2018 Cabernet Franc Mini Ediciones, Finca DeceroRed Wine

2018 Cabernet Franc Mini Ediciones, Finca Decero

    £3775

Finca Decero is a world-class wine producer located in the Agrelo sub-appellation of Luján de Cuyo in the northwestern part of the province of Mendoza.  Their famed Remolinos Vineyard derives its name from the little whirlwind spiral formations of soil which form in the afternoon as the gentle wind lifts the dry soil from the paths of the vineyard into swaying ‘dust devils’.  This natural phenomenon draws the attention of our overly protective Lechuza owls in the vineyard who sometimes take flight seemingly to chase them away!

2018 is a stellar vintage in Mendoza and will be long remembered.

The 2018 Decero Mini Ediciones Cabernet Franc is one of their ‘rare varieties & limited edition’ wines. Of this vintage, only 7,192 bottles were made. The wine shows nuances of pepper, graphite and plum notes with fresh aromatics and taut acidity resulting in a well-structured, elegant Cabernet Franc with great potential for ageing.

  • 2020 Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Beaune`Sous Eguisons`, Domaine Jean-Noël GagnardWhite Wine

2020 Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Beaune`Sous Eguisons`, Domaine Jean-Noël Gagnard

    £3795

Caroline Lestimé, winemaker at Jean-Noël Gagnard, decided to plant Chardonnay vines on this plot of the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune, back in 2007.   The vineyard is in La Rochepot, on an embankment overlooking and bordering the western part of the Saint-Aubin appellation Le Ban. The name “Sous Éguisons” refers to the cliff above the vineyard. The cliff offers protection from the north winds, which is a significant advantage given how harsh the climate is and how bitter the spring frosts are at this altitude. The natural growth cycle of the vines is also slower and the grapes mature a full week later than at lower levels.

The wine itself is a revelation, pure, pristine and delicious.  The matchstick mineral nose shows pure lemony fruit with a hint of florality. The palate is linear and precise with taut lemony fruit and a fine tangy, stony mineral quality. There’s just the faintest hint of spicy, toasty oak, but the real theme here is pure, vital lemon fruit with great precision and lovely integrated acidity.

  • 2019 Tokaji Aszu 5 Puttonyos, Chateau Dereszla, 375mlDessert Wine, Port & Dessert Wine

2019 Tokaji Aszu 5 Puttonyos, Chateau Dereszla, 375ml

    £3900

Situated in the heart of the Tokaj region, the origins of Chateau Dereszla can be traced back to the 18th century. The Estate owns 27 hectares spread across the designated “Grand Cru” area, and the large diversity of soils throughout these vineyard holdings is a crucial factor in the complexity of their wines. The historic cellars were fully renovated in 2003 and equipped with state-of-the-art winemaking technology.

Château Dereszla is world-renowned for its sweet wines made from grapes affected by Botrytis cinerea, also known as “noble rot”.   This 2019 Aszú 5 Puttonyos is made from the Furmint and Hárslevelű grape varieties which are native to Hungary.     In the glass, the wine is deep, the roasted fruit notes are complemented by lively, fresh apricot and quince. Luscious yet sprightly, with a beautiful blossomy scent and a fresh finish. Glazed peach and honey overflow from the nose, counterbalanced by lovely earthy nuances.

Château Dereszla Aszú 5 Puttonyos is an excellent example of traditional Tokaji wines and is a delicious and elegant dessert in its own right.

To make Château Dereszla Aszú 5 Puttonyos, the grapes are harvested by hand to be able to carefully select the grapes affected by Botrytis cinerea, with the final amount of sugar measured in puttonyos.  A puttonyo is a kind of basket with an approximate capacity of 25 kg. It is used as a measure to work out the quantity noble rot clusters, which they call Aszú, and which are subsequently poured into the base wine in 136-litre barrels. The minimum quantity for this class of wines is 3 puttonyos and the maximum is 6. The more puttonyos it contains, the sweeter it will be.  The resulting wine ages for three years in Hungarian oak barrels.

  • 2018 Shiraz, Tahbilk *Magnum*Red Wine

    2018 Shiraz, Tahbilk *Magnum*

    £4000

Tahbilk Shiraz is sourced from nearly 30 hectares of vines planted at various times from the 1930s through the early 2000s. Made using traditional Tahbilk techniques; fermentation takes place in 150 + year old open vats, before maturation in French and American oak for 18 months before bottling. The resultant releases are noted as being fruit-driven wines of much flavour and substance, proven over the years to develop added character when cellared. Varietally expressive with ample plum and blackberry fruits, there is warm earth and spicy savouriness that immediately appeals with a backbone of fine, opulent tannins and a rich, persistent finish.

Tahbilk’s vineyards are grouped along the banks of the Goulburn River, a branch of it which flows through the estate. The vines are grown at around 134 metres elevation of gently undulating and flat terrain. The soils are sandy loam with ferric oxide content, which vary from very fine sand near the anabranch to denser loams on the plains. Tahbilk has Shiraz vineyards dating back from the 1860s to the 1990s. The oldest surviving block is the ‘1860 block’; planted on its own roots in sandy soils, which has made it impossible for phylloxera to colonise the vine roots.
