    An opulent and spicy full-flavoured wine, with layered flavours of prunes and garrigue from this award-winning producer.

    The vineyards are located in the relatively new appellation of Plan de Dieu, which translates as Plan of God in English. Despite the first historical mentions of the “Plan Dei”, which date back to a parchment from 1326, the lieu-dit of Plan de Dieu was only designated a red wine producing appellation in 2005. The climate here is classic Mediterranean with the additional influence of the Mistral winds. The terroir sits on an alluvial plateau with calcareous gravel, which retains water, helping to preserve the vines during the hot and often arid summer months.

It is a sandy soil formed over millions of years by sand transported by the rivers Tagus and Sado.     Lirac is an appellation on the western side of the southern Rhône Valley. Domaine de Cigalounes is a seven-hectare property which has been certified organic since 2012. It is located on the rocky plateau between the villages of Tavel and Lirac, on the opposite bank of the Rhône from Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The vines are grown according to traditional philosophies, in red soils with pebbly topsoil.

    Casa Lo Alto Manzán is made from Bobal, a grape that is increasingly attracting the attention of wine consumers. Most people have never heard of Bobal, and yet it is the second most planted red grape variety in Spain, second only to Tempranillo!  Traditionally used in bulk wine production it is no finding it feet as a standalone wine and as the muse of exceptional winemakers such as Casa Lo Alto’s Valencian winemaker Víctor Marqués.  Using organic, biodynamic and sustainable principles he has crafted this stunning Bobal from three vineyards planted between 1940 and 1965.

    Casa Lo Alto Manzán 2017 is a fluid red wine with light herbaceous aromas and Incisive red fruit. On the palate, it is fresh and fruity, with medium acidity and mouthwatering dry tannins.  This really is such a pure and joyful wine and deserves your attention!

    Interesting facts: The vines are planted bush-style in order to save water and protect them from over-exposure to the sun. In the soil, which is calcareous clayey and poor in organic matter, the use of chemical products is avoided and biodynamic preparations are used.   In the winery, the grapes are destemmed but not pressed. Once they arrive, they undergo spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts. After pressing the juice is then decanted into barrels to rest on its lees for approximately 10 months.

    The grapes come from the AOP Côtes de Roussillon, where the vineyards are located within a natural amphitheatre open to the Mediterranean Sea, and are surrounded by mountain ranges. The climate is Mediterranean, strongly influenced by cooling coastal breezes combined with freshness from the foothills of the Pyrenees, which temper the hot, arid summers. The vines are grown on the Roussillon plains where the soils are made up of alluvial marls with black schist, which imparts great aromatic complexity to the wines, characterised by notes of black fruits, garrigue and freshness. The vineyard iscertified organic.

    This deeply coloured and concentrated wine is made from 100% Alicante Bouschet, a once popular French red grape that has now found a home in the Alentejo region of Portugal.  It has a wonderful depth of dark berried fruit complemented by a characteristic eucalyptus note. Full bodied, with vibrant freshness that beautifully balances the intensity of fruit.

    The estate is situated on the Vidigueira fault, a 30 mile long east-west facing escarpment which rises to 420 metres. The fault significantly influences the climate, trapping the cool, humid Atlantic winds, so despite its southern location it is one of the most temperate sub regions in the Alentejo. These cooling and humid influences descend at night, creating diurnal temperature differences of 15°C which extend the ripening period; with the warm days concentrating the flavours in the grapes, while balancing natural acidity is retained during the cool nights.

     If you’re a lover of Beaujolais or Valpolicella then this Austrian Red made from 100% Zweigelt could be the one for you.   In the UK we drink very little Austrian red wines and the Wine Republic team are guilty of that as well BUT we we do we are always pleasantly surprised by how good they can be, and this Zweigelt from Heinrich is one of those wines.

    The vines of 2016 bequeathed grapes with extraordinary finesse.  In the glass you will find a dance of cherry aromas from morello to wild.  On the palate the tannins are fine but catchy. Despite all finesse and cool elegance, one attribute remains at the heart of this Zweigelt: pure juiciness. To allow this mouth- watering juiciness to flow unhindered, serve best at 15-16° C.
