  • 2005 Amon Ra, Glaetzer Wine Republic Heros Red Wine

    2005 Amon Ra, Glaetzer

    £14900

Amon-Ra Shiraz is an iconic wine that epitomises Ben Glaetzer’s passion to create wines that are full flavoured, multi layered and intense but still elegant, stylish and finely balanced.

Made from exceptional old vine fruit was sourced from the famed Ebenezer sub district at the northern tip of the Barossa Valley. These old vines are between 100-110 years old.

in the glass this wine has a perfumed nose, with layers of violet, spice, liquorice and vanilla. The palate flavours are very pronounced, with a very spicy back palate. Mouthfilling flavours of black pepper, blackberry, spice, and plum overlaid with cedar. The tannins are fine, yet slightly chalky but perfectly balanced. Very long aftertaste of black pepper, spice and plum.

In Egyptian mythology, Amon-Ra is considered to be the king of all gods. The temple of Amon-Ra was believed to be the first temple to ever plant a monoculture vineyard to produce wine for the citizens of the temple.

The eye on front of the label is the all-seeing eye of Horus or wedjat (“whole one”) – a powerful Egyptian symbol of protection. It is represented as a figure with six parts, corresponding to what Egyptians regarded as the six senses; touch, taste, hearing, sight, smell and thought.

  • 2013 Graveyard Shiraz, Brokenwood Wine Republic Heros Red Wine

    2013 Graveyard Shiraz, Brokenwood

    £15500

This is one of the most iconic wines in Australia and world renowned as an exceptional example of cool climate Shiraz.  The Graveyard Vineyard is the jewel in the Brokenwood crown, responsible for the company’s flagship wine. The vineyard was planted with Shiraz vines in 1970 – extremely heavy clay soils, yields are low, but fruit flavour is intense through the employment of meticulous vinification techniques.

“Forty-five year old vines. All French oak. This release streets the field. Some wines, even medium-bodied wines, just show us all how it’s done. Completely, cleanly, a whisper of nonchalance to the overt authority. The fold of tannin here does it but the fruit is velvety and sure, the complexity unforced; natural. It shows brilliant length, all components contributing. Licorice, five spice, cherry, mineral and slips of smoky oak. Ever so elegant, and ever so balanced. Completely immaculate.”   96 points, Campbell Mattinson, Wine Front, May 2015

“Simply a Hunter classic: a savoury, spicy and elegant dry red of medium weight with a remarkably gentle but surprisingly firm palate that culminates in a fresh and lingering finish. It’s dusty and floral, with delicate aromas of black and red berries, cherries and plums overlying nuances of fiery, meaty fruit. Long and seamless, with a fine, chalky spine of mouthwatering tannins, it extends with great drive and purity towards a refreshing and lively finish. Likely to become quite smoky and gamey with age.”  Jeremy Oliver, 95 Points

  • 2017 Volnay 1er Cru `En Champans`, Domaine de MontilleRed Wine

    2017 Volnay 1er Cru `En Champans`, Domaine de Montille

    £15500

On the nose, the Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru shows aromas of red cherries, raspberry and wild strawberry aromas tinged with violet. On the palate, it is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, a good acidity and a persistent finish.

“En Champans” is one of the most highly regarded vineyards of Volnay. The name of the vineyard comes from two words “Champ” (field) and “pans” (old dialect for “pente” – slope). This 0.96 parcel is located on steep east-facing slopes. The top of the parcel has light brown chalky soil whereas the lower section of the parcel is more clay dominant with a darker brown and red-hued soil.

The Domaine has practised organic viticulture since 1995 and was certified organic in 2012. Since 2005 it has also converted to biodynamic viticulture.

  • The Somm 6Mixed Cases, Red Wine, White Wine

    The Somm 6

    £16500

We taste between 50 – 100 wines a month either re-tasting wines we currently stock or tasting new wines in search of worthy additions to the shop and/or restaurant.  From these tastings, only 6 wines are chosen for the Somm 6  and the criteria?  That they be the wines we want to take home ourselves.

“The Somm 6” is for wine lovers who are searching for variety and new wine experiences as well as anyone who appreciates authenticity and value.

We have created a diverse selection of artisanal wines with detailed information on each bottle.

Whether you’re shopping for yourself or a fellow wine lover, here’s what’s in the Somm 6:

2018 Givry 1er Cru Rouge L’Empreinte, Domaine Joblot, Burgundy, France:  One of the greatest producers in Southern Burgundy, the Joblot family has been producing fine wines for over four generations. These sought after wines have limited availability.  L’Empreinte means ‘Footprint’ in French and this cuvée is the result of the best parcels of Domaine Joblot’s four Givry 1er Cru vineyards: Clos Maroles, Clos Du Cellier Aux Moines , Bois Chevaux and clos de la Servoisine.

2019 Coracle, Harry Hartman, Stellenbosch, South Africa:  Harry Hartmans’ flagship wine, Coracle is a classic Bordeaux style blend and we are delighted to be among the first to list these fabulous wines in the UK.  Made in tiny quantities these wines are going to be highly sought after very quickly!   Made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and Merlot from selected Stellenbosch vineyards.  This is a powerhouse of a wine, the 4 grape varieties are united in an intriguing and authoritative wine that casts a net of attractive aromas to reel you in. Its hedonistic charm of plum, mulberry, cassis, and blackberry is underpinned with masculine notes of English leather, cedar, tobacco, truffle, and cured meat.   The palate is delicious and mouth-filling.

2018 Middle of Everywhere Shiraz, Larry Cherubino, Frankland River, Great Southern, Western Australia: Larry Cherubino is a truly great winemaker and one of our wine heroes here at Wine Republic. Larry and his wife Edwina started Cherubino wines in their spare bedroom in 2005 after buying a small parcel of land in Frankland river in 2004. They released one wine! A lot has happened since. The range has grown, and along the way, critical acclaim has flowed, particularly noteworthy is being honoured as the Winery Of The Year by respected wine critics such as James Halliday.   Expect aromas of red earth, ground black spice and dark berries that lead to a palate of fine, silky tannins. Juicy fruit flavours of blueberry and dark cherry combine with undertones of spice.

2018 Barrel Fermented Sauvignon Blanc, Lismore, Greyton, South Africa: Lismore Estate is based in Greyton within the Overberg region of the Western Cape of South Africa.  It’s here with the Sonderend mountains as a backdrop that winemaker & proprietor Samantha O’Keefe makes her fabulous wines.  We love barrel-fermented Sauvignon Blanc at Wine Republic and this beauty is made in an “oxidative” style using old 500-litre barrels for 70% of the fermentation and maturation bringing forward richness, intense fruit and complexity. 30% of the wine is fermented and aged in 1500-litre concrete egg tanks to enhance the rich palate texture and minerality. In both the barrels and the eggs, extended less contact contributes further to the rounder mouthfeel and creaminess of this elegantly textured wine.

2020 Painter of Light Chardonnay, Blackbook Winery, England:  New limited edition wine from the urban winery Blackbook, based under a railway arch in Battersea, South London. Grapes are sourced the single Clay Hill Vineyard in Essex and harvested in mid-October. Whole-bunch pressed and fermented in Burgundy barrels with the grapes’ indigenous yeast is a low intervention and characterful method of winemaking. 20% is new oak, the rest old. The wine is finally aged for 11 months prior to bottling. The result is an aromatic white wine with citrus, honeydew melon and stone fruits over hints of ginger and almond. Peach, zippy lime and a smoky, flinty finish make up a palate that’s both intense and refreshing. A real testament to quality English winemaking.

2015 Wigan Riesling, Peter Lehmann, Eden Valley, South Australia:  From the shallow rocky soils of the Eden Valley, the Wigan Riesling has become one of Australia’s most celebrated wines.
Named after its winemaker, Andrew Wigan who until his recent retirement had a hand in every Peter Lehman vintage from its first in 1980, it is only released after 5 years from vintage to capture the wine’s full potential.
Andrew ‘Wigs’ Wigan revolutionised white winemaking and championed the Riesling grape and his eponymous wine has been named IWSC ‘Best Riesling in the World’ six times and accumulated more than 80 trophies since its inaugural vintage.

La Rioja Alta’s Viña Ardanza Reserva is one of the finest Reserva’s available and a benchmark for the region.  Every vintage is outstanding and never fails to elicit a smile upon drinking.    La Rioja Alta is the gold standard for traditional bodegas: a winery that ages their wines the old-fashioned way, meaning three years in barrel with two rackings a year, followed by three years in bottle.

The 2015 comprises 78% Tempranillo from Fuenmayor and Cenicero blended together with 22% Garnacha from the famous ‘La Pedriza’ vineyard in Tudelilla.

“The nose stands out for its power, a highly complex blend of spicy and balsamic aromas of sweet liquorice, patisserie, vanilla, cinnamon, cocoa, coffee and nutmeg, and notes of stewed red fruits. Outstanding balance, pleasant freshness and great structure in the mouth, with supple, round tannins. Very pleasant mouthfeel. An ample aftertaste of spicy notes, sweet liquorice and ripe fruit makes Viña Ardanza 2015 a timeless wine, with tremendous laying-down potential and one of the best vintages of the XXI.” Head winemaker – Julio Saénz

Galatrona is a Merlot cru from the ten-hectare vineyard Galatrona planted in during the 1990s with low vigour Bordeaux clones. This is Petrolo’s flagship wine, it is extremely aromatic and has great structure.

Powerful but very well balanced, with a strong finishing tannic kick and strong hints of underbrush and rosemary.

  • 2019 Pinot Noir ‘Day One’, SensesRed Wine

2019 Pinot Noir ‘Day One’, Senses

    £18500

Classic aromas of mulled red and black fruits, forest floor, conifer, and spiced orange carry through to a velvety palate showing wonderful purity of fruit, a precise texture and supreme balance.

The fruit comes from the Hillcrest Vineyard, a single vineyard site purchased by Myles’ parents, Carleton Briggs and Lisa Lawrence in 1988. Located just outside of Occidental, this site borders the Charles Heintz Vineyard to the west and is home to the original Chardonnay planting in the West Sonoma Coast. It has however since been replanted to Pinot Noir, which thrives in the warm microclimate which is tempered by the cool, coastal breezes and the trademark fog that lingers over the vineyards, bringing moisture and cooling the vines. The result is a long hang-time, during which the vines slowly build aromatic complexity, concentrated flavours, superbly balanced by natural, acidity.

2019 stands out as one of the more exceptional vintages in recent memory. Cooler temperatures and stable weather throughout the growing season allowed for slow maturation of flavours without any heat events spiking sugar accumulation in the berries. Although 2019 also saw the devastating Kincade fire in Sonoma County, the fruit was harvested by then, so the smoke did not affect the grapes.

  • 1991 Occhio di Pernice, Avignonesi, 375ml Wine Republic Heros Dessert Wine, Port & Dessert Wine, Red Wine

1991 Occhio di Pernice, Avignonesi, 375ml

    £19500

The Occhio di Pernice is made from Sangiovese grapes, locally known as Prugnolo Gentile.   It undergoes the same process as the Vin Santo, resulting in a wonderful array of liquid caramel, candied berry fruits and plum marmalade.

The winemaking process is fascinating and starts with the grapes being carefully placed in small wooden boxes.  They are then laid out on straw mats to dry and only pressed the following spring. The winemaker receives only small amounts of juice, but it is full of extracts and with a very high density (Oechsle).  The grape must is then sealed for 10 years in used wooden barrels called Caratelli where it vinifies and matures in them without the barrels ever being opened. The Occhio di Pernice Vin Santo then matures in the bottle for a further six months before release.

The name Occhio di Pernice means “eye of the partridge” in German and is derived from the amber colour of the grapes as they ripen.

  • 2012 Armagh Shiraz, Jim Barry Wine Republic Heros Red Wine

    2012 Armagh Shiraz, Jim Barry

    £19500

This is one of the worlds greatest wines.

The iconic ‘Armagh’ vineyard was named by the original Irish settlers who arrived in 1849 and called the lush, rolling hills after their homeland. In 1968, the vineyard was purchased by Jim Barry who planted it with Shiraz. Today these low-yielding vines produce less 27 hectolitres per hectare. The soil is sandy gravel and receives an average rainfall of 600 millimetres per year. The vineyard lies on a northwest-facing slope which acts as a natural sun trap, ensuring the fruit is always fully ripened at harvest time. The Clare Valley climate is continental with a high diurnal temperature difference, producing Shiraz with evenly ripened tannins and flavour.

‘Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2012 Shiraz The Armagh offers a gorgeous perfume of baking spices, violets, Sichuan pepper and fragrant earth. More earthy and savory in the mouth than on the nose, the palate is superbly structured and taut—built for the long-haul—with a long, complex finish. Still very youthfully, forget this wine for 3-5 more years and consider drinking it over the next 20+’      98+ points Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, Wine Advocate
