‘Raices’ translates as Estate and the grapes for this wine come from vineyards located in the Uco Valley, Mendoza at an altitude of 700 metres above sea-level. 2020 Primitivo di Puglia, A Mano
£1325Add to BasketThis wine is deep red in colour. On the nose, there are intense aromas of ripe dark fruit, especially blackberries and cherries, with spicy notes of cocoa, lavender and liquorice. On the palate, it is youthful and full-bodied, with a great concentration of ripe, rounded fruit. It is a very elegant, fresh and complex Primitivo.
The grapes for this wine come from vineyards in the heart of the Primitivo growing region, located in the low hills east of Taranto in Puglia. The region is an old sea bed, full of fossils of clams, oysters and urchins. The altitude is approximately 20 metres above sea level and annual rainfall is 35 centimetres. The climate is classically Mediterranean as Puglia is a peninsula between the Adriatic and the Ionian seas. The Primitivo vines are quite old; most are the original plantings after phylloxera and range from 70 to 100 years old. As with most vineyards planted at that time they are small bush vines called ‘alberello’ which are non-irrigated and low yielding. The average Primitivo vineyard is quite small, less than half a hectare and the best sites have a crumbly, dark reddish-brown soil that resembles instant coffee.

2022 ‘Mariana’ Red, Herdade do Rocim
£1375Add to BasketThis vibrant blend of native Portuguese grapes delivers exuberant aromas of red berries complimented by subtle spicy notes. Textured on the palate with silky tannins enveloping the fruit through to a long, delicious finish.
Herdade do Rocim is associated with the Sustainable Program of the Alentejo Viticulture. This wine is made from organically grown grapes; 70% of the vineyard is certified and the remaining 30% is in conversion. The estate is situated on the Vidigueira fault, a 30-mile long east-west facing escarpment that rises to 420 metres. The fault significantly influences the climate, trapping the cool, humid Atlantic winds, so despite its southern location, it is one of the most temperate sub-regions in the Alentejo. These cooling and humid influences descend at night, creating diurnal temperature differences which extend the ripening period; with the warm days concentrating the flavours in the grapes, while balancing natural acidity is retained during the cool nights. The soils are of granitic and schistous origin. The water level in the soil is rich and superficial, nourishing the vines during the warm summers.

2020 ‘The Black’ Shiraz ‘Winemakers Reserve’, Berton Vineyard
£1495Add to BasketThe Winemakers Reserve Black Shiraz is a multi-award winning wine and an outstanding example of Australian Shiraz with deep colour and aromas of blackberry and plum over toasty coffee and spicy oak. The palate is full-flavoured and intense with rich plum, blueberry and mocha notes. The tannins are ripe and dense imparting great structure and length to the palate.
Predominantly sourced from the vineyards in Padthaway, South Australia, where the soils are sandy loam over clay, formed on old lagoon sediments. These sandy soils lead to poor nutrient and water retention which helps to concentrate the flavours in the fruit. The vines are grown on single wire trellises, ensuring an open canopy. Drip irrigation is used in the vineyards to manage the water supply and reduce evaporation, as water is applied directly above the roots. The fruit was harvested during the cooler nights to retain freshness.

2017 Legardeta Garnacha, Chivite
£1495Add to BasketThe Chivite Legardeta range of wines includes Syrah, Chardonnay and this Garnacha. Born in one of the most northern areas of the Iberian Peninsula for the cultivation of grapes, the Finca Legardeta. This terroir, located 45 km from Pamplona is where these three unique wines are born, which have adapted perfectly to this enclave thanks to its climate and type of soil.
After 10 months in French oak barrels, the 2017 Garnacha shows a ruby red colour with intense violet hues. Its nose is fruity, with a predominance of red fruit (raspberry, strawberry), caramelised apple notes, very direct and seductive. Good entry on the palate, elegant, full-bodied, with refreshing and balanced acidity.
As Julián Chivite points out, “the confluence of the Atlantic and continental climates in Legardeta, allows the Garnacha variety to reach perfect maturity, resulting in a wine of great varietal clarity and unusual freshness”.
