2019 Minervois ‘La Régence’, Domaine La Rouviole

    £1650

La Rouviole is located in the renowned Cru La Livinière area of Minervois.  Wines are made from blends of Syrah, Grenache, Cinsault and Carignan from the best and oldest plots of the estate.

This 2019 Minervois ‘La Régence is a full-flavoured and perfumed wine showing notes of ripe cassis with elegant cedar and chocolate notes and a fine, velvety texture.

The vineyard is located in the heart of the ‘Petit Causse’ terroir, in the Cru La Livinière production area, which lies between Carcassonne, Béziers and Narbonne. The 30-year old vines are grown on the hillside plots, on clay-limestone soil. The clay component retains moisture and nourishes the vines through the warm, summers, while the limestone imparts elegance to the resulting wines. The vineyard is orientated towards a southern exposure, which captures exceptional sunshine, over 300 days per year, which enables the grapes to reach excellent maturity and concentration. The Mediterranean is less than 25 miles away, which influences the vines with cooling oceanic breezes. The vineyard is surrounded by scrubland, with thyme, lavender, rosemary and almond, fig, cherry and olive trees all contributing to the aromatic complexity of the wines. The vineyard is managed using strict organic processes.

  • 2020 Swartland Rouge, Kloof StreetRed Wine

    2020 Swartland Rouge, Kloof Street

    £1675

Produced by Chris and Andrea Mullineux, the Kloof Street wines represent balance, freshness and superb value. They act as the perfect starting point for discovering Swartland’s wines. It is immediately evident in the glass that as much care goes into these wines as Mullineux’s Single Terroir Syrahs and Chenin Blancs.

The spicy perfumed nose has undertones of dark fruits. Each variety in the blend adds balance to the wine. Tinta Barocca brings tannin, Cinsault brings perfume, Carignan brings freshness, Grenache brings fruit character, and the Syrah ties it all together.

A blend of eight vineyard parcels, this wine is made from sustainably farmed fruit sourced from different parts of the Swartland. The vines are aged between 12 – 40 years. Two parcels of Syrah and one of Cinsault come from the stony shale and schist-based soils of Kasteelberg, which retain heat well and aid in the ripening of bold fruit. One parcel of dry-land, bush vine Syrah, one of Carignan, one of Grenache and a single parcel of gnarly, old, dry-farmed Tinta Barocca bush vines are all grown on the decomposed granite soil of the Paardeberg. This soil promotes the production of complex wines with lifted acidity. The final parcel is Mourvèdre grown on the rolling, iron-rich soils west of Malmesbury.

  • 2015 ‘Coleccion’ DO Yecla, Bodega CastanoRed Wine

2015 ‘Coleccion’ DO Yecla, Bodega Castano

    £1695

The Castaño family owns over 410 hectares of vineyards in the Yecla DO in south-eastern Spain. 80% of these vineyards are planted with the native Monastrell variety. For several generations, Bodegas Castaño has been a pioneer in this region and has come to symbolise the best of what southern Spain has to offer: rich, warm climate wines made from grapes grown at altitude, resulting in wines of great character and finesse.

The grapes for the 2015 ‘Coleccion’ were harvested from 70-year-old Monastrell vines and 32-year-old Cabernet Sauvignon vines, planted at 750 metres above sea level.  Dark and intense in colour, this wine is complex on the nose, with ripe black fruit aromas, notes of roasted coffee and chocolate. Soft on the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet delicate, with marked but elegant sweet tannins, and a long finish.

  • 2018 Tempranillo de Laderas, BadiolaRed Wine

    2018 Tempranillo de Laderas, Badiola

    £1695

Badiola is the creation of 2 Masters of Wine, Andreas Kubach and Sam Harrop along with txakoli producer Gorka Izagirre.   Andreas and Sam along with Winemaker Tao Plantón craft modern Rioja wines with an emphasis on-site rather than how long it has aged in an oak barrel.  The winemaking philosophy is to obtain very pure, fresh and well-textured wines that reflect their origin.

The 2018 Tempranillo de Laderas has pure and precise aromas of cherries and red berries are layered with herbal notes of thyme through to a textured palate. This wine shows an excellent balance between fresh natural acidity, fruit concentration and firm, but fine-grained tannins.

‘Laderas’ means hillside and this wine takes its name from the hillside vineyards on which the grapes are grown. The fruit is carefully selected from over 300 parcels that are situated on the slopes of the Sierra Cantabria, in Rioja Alavesa. The average plot size is just 0.3 hectares and the average age of the vineyard is approximately 50 years, but some of the vines are significantly older, producing low yields of concentrated juice. The Gobelet trained vines are planted in limestone soils, resulting in elegant wines that are fresh, precise and age-worthy due to the balancing acidity.

Despite the first historical mentions of the “Plan Dei”, which date back to a parchment from 1326, the lieu-dit of Plan de Dieu was only designated a red wine producing appellation in 2005. The climate here is classic Mediterranean with the additional influence of the Mistral winds. The terroir sits on an alluvial plateau with calcareous gravel, which retains water, helping to preserve the vines during the hot and often arid summer months.

  • 2019 Chianti Classico ‘San Jacopo’, Castello VicchiomaggioRed Wine

2019 Chianti Classico ‘San Jacopo’, Castello Vicchiomaggio

    £1695

The wines of Castello Vicchiomaggio truly show off the Sangiovese grape at its best. Vicchiomaggio is consistently classified amongst Italy’s top estates and winemaker John Matta has been named IWSC Italian Winemaker of the Year four times in the last 14 years.

The 2019 Chianti Classico ‘San Jacopo’ is named after an antique farmhouse located on the wine estate.   It is a lovely expression of Chianti, with red cherry and cranberry fruits, the palate has good substance and a lingering, rounded finish.

The vineyards are located in the heart of the Chianti Classico region and sit at an altitude of 255 to 265 metres above sea level. The Chianti Classico area is characterised by a Mediterranean climate and the soil, which is called “Galestro”, is rich in clay and large stones. The soils in this vineyard are made up of a high proportion of heavy clay- approximately 30%- which is renowned for its cooling properties and water retention for the vine, as well as for producing bold wines from the Sangiovese grape. Planted at a density of 5,600 vines per hectare, the vines are pruned according to the Single Guyot method which ensures low yields of approximately 52 hectolitres per hectare.
