  • <a href="https://wine-republic.co.uk/product/2014-amarone-musella/">2018 Amarone della Valpolicella, Musella</a> Red Wine

    2018 Amarone della Valpolicella, Musella

    £3995

The 2018 Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG by Musella is a masterful expression of Valpolicella’s rich winemaking heritage, crafted with biodynamic precision and a deep respect for tradition. Sourced from estate vineyards nestled in the hills northeast of Verona, this wine is a blend of 50% Corvinone, 45% Corvina, 5% Rondinella, and 5% Oseleta.

The grapes undergo the traditional Appassimento process, where they are dried in well-ventilated rooms, losing at least 40% of their original weight. This concentrates their sugars, aromatic compounds, and noble tannins. In January, the grapes are gently pressed, and fermentation begins at low winter temperatures (13–17°C). The wine is then aged for 24 months in 3,500 to 5,000-litre oak barrels, followed by 12 months in concrete tanks, allowing it to develop depth and complexity.

In the glass, this Amarone reveals a deep ruby hue. The nose is rich with aromas of sweet cherries, dried fruits, spices, and hints of bitter chocolate and tobacco. On the palate, it is full-bodied and opulent, offering a harmonious balance of concentrated fruit flavours and a pleasantly tangy finish. The wine’s structure is supported by its 15.6% alcohol content, providing a robust yet refined experience.

Crafted from the finest estate-grown fruit on the historic Nuriootpa vineyard, this wine celebrates the harmony of Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, and Merlot, sourced from vines dating back to 1894.

In the glass, it shows a vibrant deep crimson hue, hinting at the richness within. The bouquet is layered and compelling, with brooding red and dark fruits, lifted by subtle notes of bay leaf and a whisper of earth. It is powerful yet elegant on the palate, revealing a rich tapestry of vibrant cassis, sweet spice of cinnamon and clove, and luxurious hints of dark chocolate. The fine, long tannins are beautifully integrated, bringing structure and grace, as they interplay seamlessly with the wine’s opulent fruit core.

2022 Shiraz ‘Neil Ashmead Grand Tourer’, Elderton

    £3995

Crafted in honour of Elderton co-founder Neil Ashmead, the 2022 Neil Ashmead Grand Tourer Shiraz is a tribute to the passion and pioneering spirit that helped shape the Barossa Valley into one of Australia’s premier wine regions. This wine is a bold yet elegant expression of Shiraz, drawn from two distinctive vineyard sites: the historic Nuriootpa vineyard, planted in 1954, and the Greenock vineyard, established in 1980.

In the glass, the nose is immediately expressive, brimming with aromas of fresh blueberry and ripe plum, underpinned by whispers of spice, vanilla bean, and a touch of graphite. On the palate, this Shiraz impresses with plush layers of juicy summer berry pudding, charcuterie spice, and a lively peppery zest that brings tension and brightness.

There’s a wonderful harmony between power and finesse; its creamy mid-palate texture is framed by fine, powdery tannins that glide through to a long, poised finish. This vintage exemplifies the best of the Barossa: bold fruit character, structural integrity, and a sense of place. Enjoy now or cellar confidently for up to 10 years.

Domaine de la Solitude has one of the best terroirs in Châteauneuf-du-Pape with its abundance of rounded quartzite stones from the Villafranchian period. These stones absorb heat during the day and then radiate it at night, promoting full grape maturity. Yielding just 30 hectolitres per hectare, the vines are carefully managed throughout the year. The grapes are hand-harvested once each variety has reached full maturity, which is based on tastings undertaken by an expert panel. The vineyard is farmed sustainably; the domain promotes and develops biodiversity in the vineyard by maintaining a flourishing wine-growing ecosystem.

2020 Syrah, The Language Of Yes, Randall Grahm

    £4350

Randall Grahm is a legend of California winemaking, renowned for his trailblazing work with Rhône Varieties in the Central Coast. ‘The Language of Yes’ is his latest project, an attempt to capture the essence of Old World wines through the ‘uniqueness of the vineyards and the (mostly) sunny disposition of California’.

This is a deliciously complex Syrah, marked by its lively acidity and layers of vivid pepperiness, black olive, violets, liquorice and white flowers. Smooth and textured with a long finish.

The Syrah and Viognier grapes come from the single vineyard ‘Rancho Réal’, in the Santa Maria Valley which is one of the coolest sites where vines are successfully grown in California. Here, the vines enjoy a particularly long growing season, thus developing an impressive degree of complexity and articulation. For example, the formation of ‘Rotundone’, the molecule that imparts the peppery quality to wines, is favoured by cooler climates, lower light conditions and a long hang-time on the vine.
