2020 Cape Mentelle Cabernet Sauvignon, Cape Mentelle

    £4495

“A wine that represents the pinnacle of our energies and research, the embodiment of our experimentation and exploration and the symbol of our legacy”

In the glass, the aromatics are deep and complex consisting of a mineral blackcurrant core with touches of anise, bay leaves and dark chocolate. Rich elements of rosemary, spearmint and moist forest floor reveal themselves as the tightly wound profile gently unfurls.  The palate has a powerful rush of cocoa powder, with dark forest berry fruits of blackcurrant and mulberry, peppered with notes of spiced ginger and caramel toffee. The seamlessly integrated palate of powdery tannins frame the perfectly weighted earthiness and fruit, giving a long texture that harks of the saline coastal influence.

  • <a href="https://wine-republic.co.uk/product/2016-pinot-noir-stargazer/">2016 Pinot Noir, Stargazer</a> Red Wine

    2016 Pinot Noir, Stargazer

    £4500

This is the first Stargazer Pinot Noir to come from the Palisander Vineyard, purchased in February 2016. Located in the Tea Tree sub-region of the Coal River Valley, twenty minutes north-east of Hobart, it was planted with vines in 2002.   It is very aromatic with a lifted nose which is firmly in the red fruits spectrum: think cranberries, red cherries and pomegranate. Light and delicate the 2016 Pinot Noir is all about crunchy red fruits and a creamy, layered texture. The tannins are lacy and delicate. Some more refined, savoury dried herb characters emerge with air.   Delicious and rare only 2880 bottles produced.

Owner and winemaker of Stargazer, Samantha is a former Red Winemaker of the Year, a title won whilst head winemaker at McLaren Vale’s Wirra Wirra Vineyards.   Now bringing her skills to bear on her own project she is undoubtedly going to propel Stargazer onto ever greater heights.

Stargazer pays tribute to Abel Tasman, who as an explorer and navigator, must have spent a fair amount of time gazing towards the heavens. Tasman, a Dutchman under the employ of the United East India Company was the first European to sight Tasmania (on 24 November 1642) and then the South Island of New Zealand, nineteen days later on 13 December.

2008 ‘La Ciornia’ Shiraz, La Violetta

    £4500

The inspiration for La Ciornia comes from Andrew Hoadley time spent working in Barbaresco.    Really refined bright, the aromatic nose showing sweet, pure raspberry and cherry fruit with subtle hints of meat, olive and spice. The palate is superbly elegant with pure, seamless, beautifully poised cherry and raspberry fruit. Lovely elegance and freshness   I think Matthew Jukes summed it up best for me when be said of Ciornia “I certainly had no idea that a Shiraz from Denmark could have Pinot Noir tenderness under its malevolent, vampiric exterior.”

2008 Shiraz ‘Westgate Vineyard’, The Story

    £4500

This is a single vineyard wine made (in the winemaker’s words) ‘naturally fermented over 21 days in open French oak puncheons, then hand bucketed and pressed to 31% new French oak from Francois Frères, and Gillet cooperages. It was allowed to mature for 14 months (then bottled) without fining or filtration’.   The result – very floral Shiraz characters such as violets, graphite, meat, black fruits and black pepper.  The palate is full of warm spice synonymous with the Grampians region. A dark, ripe, controlled and firm core of black fruit and spice ripples through the palate, the tannins are generous but supportive, and the finish fresh and lengthy.

    2021 Volnay, Domaine Rebourgeon-Mure

    £4500

Rebourgeon has a growing reputation for seriously good pinot noir which is kind of ironic as the families’ winemaking roots can be traced back to 1552!   This 2019 Volnay has a perfect balance of tension, energy and flavour.  It is made from two parcels, one in Les Pluchots planted in the 1920s and one in Les Lurets, half Premier Cru and half Village Cru.

In the glass, this Volnay has a lovely nose of dark berry fruit with hints of rose petals and blackcurrant.  The palate is medium-bodied with a fine grip, succulent tannins, with a mixture of blue and blackberry fruit  An all-around delicious wine.

2018 ‘Secret de Schistes’, Château de l’Ou

    £4500

An aromatic bouquet of red and blue fruits, enhanced by graphite, crushed stone, pepper and herbal notes of the garrigue. Rich, with an elegant texture, polished tannins and superb length.

The Syrah vines are grown in the High Agly Valley, where the vineyard is situated at 325 metres. At this elevation the vines benefit from the coastal breezes sweeping up from the Mediterranean Sea, which help to temper the scorching summer heat. The mountainous foothills of the Pyrenees provide good diurnal temperature differences, with cooler evenings offering the vines gentle respite from the heat, resulting in balanced fruit with natural freshness. The soils are made up of a mosaic of schist soils, which date back to the Cretaceous period. The schistous marl produces shallow black soils, forcing vines to put down deep roots in search of water and nutrients. The vineyard is certified organic.

    £4500

A magnum of 2022 Pojega Ripasso Valpolicella by Guerrieri Rizzardi

Crafted from hand-harvested grapes grown on the historic Rizzardi family estate—established in 1649 and nestled in the heart of the Valpolicella Classico zone—this Ripasso showcases both tradition and finesse. The inclusion of 10% Amarone in the Ripasso process brings added depth and structure to the wine, while preserving the hallmark freshness and elegance of the region.

In the glass, the nose of the 2022 Pojega is aromatic and expressive, offering layers of ripe dark cherry, blackberry, and plum, with subtle hints of spice, dried herbs, and cocoa. The palate is medium to full-bodied, with a vibrant acidity that lends lift and drinkability, balanced by a supple texture and fine-grained tannins. The Amarone component adds richness and complexity, contributing to a long, persistent finish with notes of dark fruit and earthy undertones.

Multi-dimensional and refined, Pojega is a red that captivates now and promises even more with time in the bottle. A perfect companion to hearty dishes, but equally compelling on its own.

    2017 Syrah ‘Clonal Selection’, Kershaw

    £4750

A subtle, precise style of Syrah built on fine tannins that educe harmony and freshness with flavours of black fruits, iodine and ground white peppercorns.  Only 9253 bottles and 33 Magnums.

The grapes come from five small vineyard parcels in several locations in the Elgin Valley. Elgin is the coolest wine region in South Africa and is situated on an inland, hexagonal shaped plateau, at an altitude of 300 metres. The region is surrounded by mountains and lies just over six miles from the Atlantic Ocean, which brings occasional sea-borne mists. February is the hottest month of the year, with daytime temperatures peaking at 23°C and night-time temperatures dipping to 14°C. The benefit of this cooler climate is that the grape cluster stays connected to its roots for longer, so it develops complex characteristics and achieves physiological ripeness more gradually, resulting in lower sugar levels and consequently lower alcohol levels.
