2023 The Chocolate Block, Boekenhoutskloof – MAGNUM

    £5500

A Magnum of South Africa’s cult wine

The 2023 vintage of The Chocolate Block continues to build on its legacy as one of South Africa’s most iconic and sought-after red blends. Crafted predominantly from Syrah, with carefully selected additions of Grenache, Cinsault, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Viognier (blend proportions vary annually), this cult-status wine showcases Boekenhoutskloof’s mastery in balancing innovation and consistency. Only 4,043 barrels were produced, further enhancing its rarity and appeal.

In the glass, the wine opens with an intensely aromatic bouquet of blackberries, blueberries, and ripe bramble fruit, intertwined with black olive tapenade, crushed violets, and a dusting of white pepper and coriander seed. The palate is rich yet polished, delivering layers of dark berry fruit, red liquorice, and cherry compote, underscored by hints of cherry tobacco and exotic spice.

Despite its medium to full body, the wine remains elegant and focused, with vibrant acidity and silky tannins that glide across the palate. The finish is long, dry, and laced with a touch of savoury complexity, reflecting both the terroir and meticulous craftsmanship behind the blend.

A compelling, age-worthy red that drinks beautifully now but will reward cellaring over the next 5–8 years. Ideal with flame-grilled meats, game dishes, or rich Mediterranean fare.

    2019 Pommard, Benoit Sordet

    £5500

Domaine Benoît Sordet is a historic, family-run estate located in Pommard, one of Burgundy’s most iconic Pinot Noir villages in the Côte de Beaune. With roots dating back to 1793, the domaine has been passed down through generations, and today it is guided by Benoît Sordet, who upholds the family’s deep commitment to traditional Burgundian craftsmanship. The estate’s vineyards include parcels in some of the region’s most sought-after terroirs, and its winemaking philosophy centres on expressing the purity and individuality of each site with minimal intervention and sustainable practices.

This 2019 Pommard is a true expression of this philosophy, refined, structured, and evocative of its origin. Sourced from old vines on clay-limestone soils, the wine was vinified traditionally and aged in French oak barrels to enhance its complexity while preserving varietal character.

In the glass, the nose is layered with classic aromas of wild cherry, redcurrant, and blackberry, mingling with subtle notes of earth, violet, and a whisper of spice. The palate is elegant yet firm, showcasing bright red fruit, fine tannins, and a mineral edge, hallmarks of the Pommard terroir. A touch of oak brings finesse and gentle structure, leading to a long, harmonious finish.

Ten Minutes by Tractor needs little introduction, nor does the man in charge, Martin Spedding. A gently-spoken man with a background in finance and IT, in 2002, he finally acknowledged the fact that his true passion lay in wine. Despite his origins in New South Wales, he simply couldn’t get enough of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and would travel down to Victoria to immerse himself in Australia’s heartland of these noble varieties. In 2003, he visited one of his favourite small wineries on Mornington Peninsula and was delighted to discover that it was for sale. Without a moment’s hesitation, he snapped it up, and so began Martin’s journey with Ten Minutes by Tractor.

The McCutcheon vineyard was purchased in 2006 from Vivian and Andrew McCutcheon, one of the founding families of Ten Minutes by Tractor.  It is one of the highest parcels of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and revels in the morning sun on the gentle easterly slopes of this vineyard.

The 2022 McCutcheon Pinot Noir presents a luminous ruby hue, offering an aromatic tapestry of crushed dry leaves, woody spices, smoky oak, and forest floor nuances. These savoury elements are beautifully balanced by a sweet, strawberry exuberance, creating an irresistible and satiny profile. On the palate, the wine is both sweet and savoury, embodying the glory of Pinot Noir.

    2017 ‘Altazor’, Undurraga

    £5995

An exceptional wine revealing expressive aromatic layers, balanced concentration and wonderful complexity. Deep red fruits and blackberries are underpinned by earthy nuances, subtle spice and mineral notes with a touch of tobacco. The structured palate shows depth of flavour and integrated tannins, through to an everlasting finish. Drinking Window 2022 – 2030

The grapes for this wine were carefully selected from small plots. The Cabernet Sauvignon comes from estate vineyards planted in the early 1990s, in Pirque and Los Morros, in Alto Maipo. The Pirque vineyard contains alluvial soils with medium composition with a high level of stone content, whereas Los Morros consists of soils of colluvial-alluvial origin. Both soil types have medium to low fertility, good depth of 1.5 to 2 metres and good drainage; ideal conditions to produce wines of character. The Carménère grapes come from an estate vineyard in the Colchagua Valley planted in the mid-1980s. The clay loam soil textures are dominant which is ideal for this variety as they retain soil moisture ensuring optimum and prolonged ripening. The Carignan grapes come from a rain-fed vineyard planted in 1958, in the Maule Valley. It contains soils with clay texture, high quartz content, subsoil of granitic origin and good drainage.

Porseleinberg is the result of Marc Kent’s (of Boekenhoutskloof fame) determined search for South Africa’s finest Syrah, a journey that ultimately led him to the Swartland.
