2020 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru, Domaine Hubert Lignier

    £18900

Nestled in the heart of Morey-Saint-Denis, Domaine Hubert Lignier is a benchmark estate of the Côte de Nuits, celebrated for crafting terroir-driven, age-worthy Pinot Noir. Founded in the early 20th century, the domaine rose to prominence under the guidance of Hubert Lignier, whose dedication to traditional viticulture and minimal-intervention winemaking earned international acclaim. Today, his son Laurent Lignier carries on the legacy, farming organically and working with a deep respect for the land and the nuances of each vineyard. With holdings in some of Burgundy’s most prestigious crus, including Clos de la Roche, Charmes-Chambertin, and Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Crus, the domaine delivers wines of exceptional depth, purity, and finesse.

The 2020 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru is the crown jewel in the estate’s lineup, sourced from one of Burgundy’s most powerful and complex Grand Cru sites. Clos de la Roche, situated in Morey-Saint-Denis, is renowned for its ability to deliver both muscular structure and aromatic elegance, and Lignier’s interpretation is a masterclass in balance and restraint.

In the glass, this wine reveals an alluring bouquet of black cherry, wild berries, violet, and crushed rose petals, wrapped in earthy notes of graphite, forest floor, and subtle spice. The palate is intense and multi-layered, with a core of ripe, dark fruit framed by firm yet velvety tannins and a vibrant mineral tension. It carries both the density of the vintage and the precision for which the domaine is known, building toward a long, stately finish that echoes with power and poise.

The 2020 Clos de la Roche is a wine of great stature and longevity, one that will benefit from cellaring over the next two decades, yet already hints at its profound complexity. A truly grand expression of Grand Cru Burgundy, from a domaine that consistently delivers wines of soul and substance.

1991 Occhio di Pernice, Avignonesi, 375ml

    £19500

The Occhio di Pernice is made from Sangiovese grapes, locally known as Prugnolo Gentile. It undergoes the same process as the Vin Santo, resulting in a wonderful array of liquid caramel, candied berry fruits and plum marmalade.

The winemaking process is fascinating and starts with the grapes being carefully placed in small wooden boxes. They are then laid out on straw mats to dry and only pressed the following spring. The winemaker receives only small amounts of juice, but it is full of extracts and with a very high density (Oechsle). The grape must is then sealed for 10 years in used wooden barrels called Caratelli where it vinifies and matures in them without the barrels ever being opened. The Occhio di Pernice Vin Santo then matures in the bottle for a further six months before release.

The name Occhio di Pernice means “eye of the partridge” in German and is derived from the amber colour of the grapes as they ripen.

2012 Estate Pinot Noir, Magnum, Paringa

    £19500

A magnificent aged magnum of Pinot Noir from an Iconic cool climate Estate in the Mornington Peninsula.

The Paringa team is confident the 2012 reds will be regarded amongst the Paringa greats. A hot weekend, then a week of solid rains in early March was followed by somewhat of an Indian summer. Pinot Noir yields in 2012 were down 20 – 30%, but resulted in great concentrated flavour & excellent overall quality. In the winery berries were de-stemmed (100%) and fermented in two-tonne open fermenters. Maturation took place over 11 months on lees in French Oak barrels (50% new). This wine has complex lifted aromas of red fruit / dark cherries supported by spicy savoury oak. The palate has attractive spicy dark cherry flavours, fine grained tannins that combine to produce a lovely textural mouthful. The poise & balance of this wine make it one of the best Paringa Pinots made in recent time.

The vineyard is set in the classic cool climate subregion of Red Hill at an altitude of 146 metres above sea level. The Pinot Noir vines are aged between 20 and 30 years; six clones are planted each with subtle characteristics which impart complexity to the resulting wine. The soil is a deep red volcanic clay that allows dry farming, without irrigation. Founder, Lindsay McCall, still tends to the vineyard characterised by its distinctive Lyre or ‘U’ trellis system which sits on an elaborate steel frame assembly.

    2021 Shiraz ‘1915 Helbig ‘, Elderton

    £21000

A single vineyard selection of truly remarkable Shiraz that was planted by the Helbig family in 1915. This vineyard is located on the western ridge of the famous Barossa Valley and has been a highly sought-after parcel for many of the Barossa’s leading winemakers. Luckily for the Ashmead family, they were able to acquire this vineyard in 2010, forever ending the race to get this amazing fruit.

In the glass, the wine presents a deep, inky crimson core with a vibrant purple rim, hinting at its youthful vitality and richness. The nose is an intense bouquet of ripe black plums and spiced red berries, layered with dark chocolate, liquorice, and a touch of clove. Subtle hints of vanilla and freshly turned earth add intrigue and complexity.

The palate is full-bodied and opulent, unfurling in waves of brooding dark fruit, think blackberry, cassis, and mulberry, all beautifully integrated with nuances of dark cocoa and savoury spice. A refined chalky minerality underpins the wine’s structure, while velvety, persistent tannins carry it to a long and seamless finish. There is immense power here, yet the wine moves with precision and grace, showcasing the remarkable harmony between fruit intensity, texture, and finesse.

Poised for a long life ahead, the 2021 Helbig 1915 Shiraz is seriously delicious now, but will evolve magnificently over the next 15 to 20 years.

  • 2012 ‘The Caley’ Cabernet & Shiraz, Yalumba Wine Republic Heros Red Wine

2012 ‘The Caley’ Cabernet & Shiraz, Yalumba

    £22400

This is the first vintage of Yalumba’s Cabernet/Shiraz-based flagship wine, The Caley. Named after Fred Caley Smith, grandson of Yalumba founder Samuel Smith, who was a horticulturist that had a profound impact on the development of Yalumba’s vineyards. In the early 1890’s he spent 18 months trekking across the USA, Britain, Europe, the Middle East, India and Sri Lanka, observing and reporting on scientific and horticultural developments. His detailed letters, sent home every few days, underpinned the way the vineyards were managed and laid the foundations of sustainable viticulture at Yalumba today.

At the time of blending, the winemaking team made the following tasting notes … Deep garnet red in colour, fruit is at the core of the bouquet, all red and black currants – overlaid with savoury herbs, green spices, cedar and pipe tobacco. The palate is of sophisticated precision with a refined line. Long and textured it captures the concentrated flavours and presents them with a silken grace. Under all that supple, fleshy muscle, the wine has a strong spine, structured to last and last.

The Caley has been sourced from three outstanding vineyards of the Coonawarra and Barossa regions. The Ming D block of the Yalumba Coonawarra vineyard provides 52% of the Cabernet Sauvignon of the blend. This 2.7ha plot was planted in 1992 with two clones of Cabernet Sauvignon selected for structure and depth of flavour. This block differs from the ubiquitous Coonawarra terroir, with a higher content of clay than the other blocks on The Menzies Estate. The Shiraz is sourced from the Burgemeister “Linke Block” between Nuriootpa and Angaston. Planted in 1901, these Shiraz vines run east-west and are on a single wire trellis. The soil is a red-brown earth in the Light Pass loamy fine sand family. There is also a component that comes from the 1971 Yalumba Horseshoe Block in Eden Valley.

2018 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, Domaine Phillipe Cheron

    £22500

Domaine Philippe Chéron is a rising star in the Côte de Nuits, rooted in a deep family heritage and driven by a modern, terroir-focused philosophy. Philippe Chéron took the reins of his family’s holdings, originally part of Domaine Misset-Chéron and Clos de la Fontaine, after working as a consulting enologist in Burgundy. His domaine now spans prestigious sites in Gevrey-Chambertin, Vosne-Romanée, and Nuits-Saint-Georges, with a commitment to minimal intervention, sustainable viticulture, and expressive, precise winemaking. The result is a collection of wines that are at once contemporary and classic, capturing the essence of their appellations with honesty and finesse.

The 2018 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is a standout from the domaine’s portfolio, sourced from the vineyard’s upper section, on the border with Chambertin itself, where shallow limestone soils lend tension and elegance to the wine’s natural richness. The warm 2018 vintage is expertly harnessed here, delivering a wine of depth, harmony, and cellar-worthy stature.

In the glass, it opens with a gorgeous aromatic profile of black cherry, wild raspberry, rose petal, and exotic spices, followed by more subtle notes of cedar, cocoa, and crushed stone. The palate is luxuriously textured yet refined, with silky tannins, ripe dark fruit, and a savoury mineral core that provides lift and length. Despite its generous fruit, this is no heavyweight; it carries its power with grace, building toward a persistent, layered finish that leaves a lasting impression of elegance and terroir.

The 2018 Charmes-Chambertin from Philippe Chéron is a Grand Cru Burgundy of exceptional balance and character, perfect for collectors and enthusiasts seeking the intersection of classic Gevrey depth and modern winemaking clarity. Enjoy over the next 15-20 years.

2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Gold Reserve, Carmen – 3000ml/Jeroboam

    £25000

This single-vineyard, ultra-premium, ultra-rare jeroboam of Vina Carmen’s Gold Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon was imported by us many years ago along with a jeroboam of 2004 and has with its sibling been in our cellars ever since. Yes, the label is slightly battered but the levels are perfect and it is a magnificent celebration drink! As with all top end Cabernet Sauvignon it has the ability to age very well and the winemaker suggested a maturity date of 2025 for this vintage and wine. The fact it is a Jeroboam should add another 5 years to that! We recently opened a magnum of both the 2004 & 2005 and the wines were sensational.

This 2005 is brimming with ripe berries, espresso, chocolate syrup and cassis with sweet, exotic spice aromas. Velvety on the palate with dense berry and mocha flavours, the tannins are powerful but ripe and the linger is substantial. A family celebration bottle if ever there was!
