  A great introduction to the fabulous wines of Chapel Hill.  This wine displays expressive and alluring aromas of liquorice and mulberry. The wonderfully structured and eloquent palate is broodingly complexed by an array of persistent fine grain tannins.

  Chapel Hill is perched on the edge of the spectacular Onkaparinga Gorge, shallow rocky soils are a feature with sweeping views back over McLaren Vale and Gulf St Vincent. The beautiful Chapel Hill vineyard overlooking sea views boasts elevation, ancient rocks, contoured plantings and moderating sea breezes. The undulating landscape results in a series of small blocks with unique combinations of geology, soil, aspect and climate.

  2018 Rioja Gran Reserva, Bodegas Ondarre

  Bodegas Ondarre makes exceptional value Rioja – it amazes us every time we drink their wines, how they can make wines of quality for these prices!

  This 2015 has a complex and mature bouquet that offers rich fruit aromas, along with hints of spice and notes of raisined fruit layered with tobacco and leather. Elegant and velvety, this is classic Gran Reserva Rioja.

  The carefully selected grapes for this wine come from old vineyards surrounding the village of Viana, which overlooks the Rioja Valley, in what is now known as Rioja Oriental. The climate is continental with a noticeable Mediterranean influence. The 40-year-old, low-yielding vines are situated on the slopes which climb up toward the Sierra Mountains at elevations of 600 to 750 metres, where the diversity of the soils contributes to the complexity of the wine.

  2017 Manzan, Casa Lo Alto

  £1995

  Casa Lo Alto Manzán is made from Bobal, a grape that is increasingly attracting the attention of wine consumers. Most people have never heard of Bobal, and yet it is the second most planted red grape variety in Spain, second only to Tempranillo!  Traditionally used in bulk wine production it is no finding it feet as a standalone wine and as the muse of exceptional winemakers such as Casa Lo Alto’s Valencian winemaker Víctor Marqués.  Using organic, biodynamic and sustainable principles he has crafted this stunning Bobal from three vineyards planted between 1940 and 1965.

  Casa Lo Alto Manzán 2017 is a fluid red wine with light herbaceous aromas and Incisive red fruit. On the palate, it is fresh and fruity, with medium acidity and mouthwatering dry tannins.  This really is such a pure and joyful wine and deserves your attention!

  Interesting facts: The vines are planted bush-style in order to save water and protect them from over-exposure to the sun. In the soil, which is calcareous clayey and poor in organic matter, the use of chemical products is avoided and biodynamic preparations are used.   In the winery, the grapes are destemmed but not pressed. Once they arrive, they undergo spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts. After pressing the juice is then decanted into barrels to rest on its lees for approximately 10 months.

  2023 Dolcetto d’Alba, Giacomo Fenocchio

  The Giacomo Fenocchio 2023 Dolcetto d’Alba is a darkly saturated and succulent wine with deep ruby colour that borders on black and purple. The bouquet is generous and persistent with small red berries and cherry fruit nose.  This hot vintage is well suited to this heat-loving grape variety. The palate is earthy and concentrated with notes of blackberries, pomegranate, and hints of black pepper with a long, mineral finish.

  Try it with on-the-spit, grilled red meats and lean Italian hors d’oeuvres.  You can also drink it cool and then it will be well-matched with freshwater fish.

  2023 Chianti Classico ‘San Jacopo’, Castello Vicchiomaggio

  £1995

  The wines of Castello Vicchiomaggio truly show off the Sangiovese grape at its best. Vicchiomaggio is consistently classified amongst Italy’s top estates and winemaker John Matta has been named IWSC Italian Winemaker of the Year four times in the last 14 years.

  The 2023 Chianti Classico ‘San Jacopo’ is named after an antique farmhouse located on the wine estate.   It is a lovely expression of Chianti, with red cherry and cranberry fruits, the palate has good substance and a lingering, rounded finish.

  The vineyards are located in the heart of the Chianti Classico region and sit at an altitude of 255 to 265 metres above sea level. The Chianti Classico area is characterised by a Mediterranean climate and the soil, which is called “Galestro”, is rich in clay and large stones. The soils in this vineyard are made up of a high proportion of heavy clay- approximately 30%- which is renowned for its cooling properties and water retention for the vine, as well as for producing bold wines from the Sangiovese grape. Planted at a density of 5,600 vines per hectare, the vines are pruned according to the Single Guyot method which ensures low yields of approximately 52 hectolitres per hectare. Particular attention is paid to the direction in which the vines are planted; they are all south-facing, ensuring maximum exposure to the sun throughout the day.

  2016 White Label Cabernet Sauvignon Petaluma

  An Aussie classic and a great example of modern Australian winemaking from a traditional wine estate with mature vineyards.   This Cabernet Sauvignon from Coonawarra is a full-flavoured, rich dry red, and shows the spicy, juicy bright fruits for which the region is renowned. Aromas of liquorice cassis and cedar are complemented by black fruits and a lovely hint of mint and Cabernet leaf.   The palate is bright and juicy, is elegant and has lovely soft sandy abundant tannin.

  The White Label range is crafted in the same Petaluma philosophy as the highly regarded Yellow Label. The grapes are grown in the key regions of Adelaide Hills (Chardonnay) and Coonawarra (Cabernet). These wines are perfect to enjoy upon their release and get better with 5-7 years of age.  Great highly drinkable wines for occasions with friends, family and food!

  2020 Côtes du Roussillon Rouge, Château de l’Ou

  An aromatic and fruity blend with crunchy red and black brambly fruits complemented by a touch of peppery spice and a subtle hint of violet. Juicy and fresh with a lovely purity of fruit.

  The grapes come from the AOP Côtes de Roussillon, where the vineyards are located within a natural amphitheatre open to the Mediterranean Sea, and are surrounded by mountain ranges. The climate is Mediterranean, strongly influenced by cooling coastal breezes combined with freshness from the foothills of the Pyrenees, which temper the hot, arid summers. The vines are grown on the Roussillon plains where the soils are made up of alluvial marls with black schist, which imparts great aromatic complexity to the wines, characterised by notes of black fruits, garrigue and freshness. The vineyard iscertified organic.

  2017 The Galvo Garage Cabernet Blend, d’Arenberg

  Made during an exceptionally balanced year. A lifted and perfumed nose displaying complex notes of violets, blackcurrant and ripe berries. The colour is quite rich, almost dark, suggesting a fuller-bodied flavour profile.  The palate is elegant, yet sings with ripe fruits, and is extremely juicy with deep richness and structure. This mix of pure fruit combines with fine oak tannins that lead to a lovely fragrant dark chocolate, minerally dry finish.

  ‘Garage wines’ is a term used to describe wines that are produced in the back sheds of French winemakers, who make small batch wines of the highest quality. Our galvanized, corrugated ‘garage’ was built in 1927 and still houses the traditional equipment used in the handcrafting of this wine.

  2015 White Label Shiraz, Petaluma

  This is a savoury medium-bodied Adelaide Hills Shiraz. In the glass, it has a dark red-black colour with a dark red hue. Aromas of liquorice and dark cherries are overlaid by some smoky cedar and dried meats with light pepper end notes. Medium-bodied flavours of dark cherries and liquorice are infused with subtle clove followed by some dried meats and spicy pepper. Fine-grained tannins with an aftertaste of spicy dark cherries, liquorice, clove infusions, dried meats and pepper.  Aged in French oak barriques and hogsheads for 17 months.

  2021 Pinot Noir ‘El Compadre’, Viña Echeverría

  A silky, smooth Pinot Noir made with low intervention to fully express notes of spiced cherry, blueberry, hibiscus and violets. Beautifully balanced with an elegant finish.

  The vineyard is located in the Valle de Malleco, surrounded by volcanoes around 340 miles to the south of Santiago. This cool- climate region has high rainfall of 1,300 millimetres a year and a short growing season. However, the region enjoys high sunlight hours which encourages ripening of the grapes. The diurnal temperature differences are marked, the warm days give way to considerably cooler nights, which slows the ripening of the grapes producing aromatic grapes with great concentration of flavours and excellent balance between sugar and acidity.

  The 2023 Chiroubles La Scandaleuse from Bernard Metrat is an enchanting red wine that showcases the essence of the Chiroubles appellation in Beaujolais.

  In the glass, it opens with inviting aromas of red berries, floral notes, and a hints of cola and spice (a hallmark of this wine, Bernard notes).  On the palate it is elegant and expressive with flavours of ripe red fruits balanced by refreshing acidity and a silky mouthfeel.   The finish is an appetising cherry-stone minerality.   A perfect wine for grilled meats or charcuterie and cheese.

  Situated just 45 kilometres east of Melbourne, the Yarra Valley is a large and diverse cool-climate wine region. Its elevation spectacularly ranges from lows of 50m to heights of 1,250m, due to the influence of the Great Dividing Range. The region is characterised by significant rainfall during winter and spring, which helps to nourish the vines throughout the dry, but cool summers.

  Founded in 2004 by famed winemaker Miguel Ángel de Gregorio in the heart of Rioja Alta, Finca Nueva leads the new wave of Riojan wines that adhere to Rioja’s traditional aging and classification system, but are more fresh, fun and enjoyable on the palate than their conventional ‘old-world’ Riojan counterparts.

  In the glass this wine opens with pronounced aromas of ripe red fruit and cassis. On the palate, the wine mimics the nose and is well-balanced with perfectly integrated tannins and a nice finish. Clean, complex and elegant, this is another top wine from winemaker Miguel Ángel de Gregorio.

  2022 ‘Origin’ Pinot Noir, Saint Clair

  Dark garnet colour in the glass with aromas layered with blueberry and blackcurrant fruits, intermingled with dark chocolate aromas. The palate is concentrated and fruit-driven with ripe red berries and dark fruits filling the senses. Delicate tannin and savoury oak notes to finish. Well-matched with garlic and rosemary lamb rack with a side of fresh lettuce and pistachio salad.

  Drinking beautifully now, this wine can be enjoyed young or with careful cellaring will mature into a more complex wine that can be enjoyed for the next three years.

  The fruit is sourced from a number of specifically chosen low cropping vineyards from the Southern Valleys region of the Wairau Plain. The vines are grown in very clay-rich, vigour moderating soils. Each vineyard is closely monitored and tasted to determine when the flavours were at their optimum and harvested in the cool of the morning.
