2023 Riesling ‘Single Vineyard McKay’s, Jim Barry

    £2500

JThis Riesling was sourced from the McKay’s vineyard in Watervale. South or east-facing slopes are best suited for Riesling as they are shielded from the hot northerly winds that can occur during summer and also receive the cooler morning sun. The soil in the McKay’s vineyard is clay over limestone, which is free draining. The Clare valley climate is continental with a high diurnal temperature difference with clear skies. The cool nights lead to the preservation of crisp natural acidity and delicate flavours.

The wine displays minerality on the nose, with characters of crunchy green apples and wet slate. A firm acid line drives through the palate with lime, citrus and a mineral finish. It has a lush silky flow and a calming finish.

    2024 Riesling, Josef Chromy

    £2500

Josef Chromy Wines, based just south of Launceston in northern Tasmania, is one of the island’s most celebrated wineries. Founded by the visionary Czech-born Josef Chromy in 2007, the estate has become a benchmark for premium cool-climate Australian winemaking.

The 2024 Riesling from Josef Chromy is a pristine and finely sculpted expression of Tasmania’s cool-climate purity, vibrant, aromatic, and uncompromisingly elegant. On the nose, it opens with piercing clarity: fresh lime juice and zest are layered with delicate notes of honeysuckle, jasmine, and juicy nectarine, all lifted by a subtle chalky minerality. The palate is dry and tightly focused, offering a mouthwatering array of citrus and stone fruit such as lime, white peach, and nectarine, all interwoven with hints of fresh mint and wet stone. Crisp natural acidity and a mineral-driven backbone provide both energy and tension, carrying through to a long, precise, and refreshingly clean finish. This is a Riesling that celebrates finesse and precision, ideal for lovers of focused, terroir-driven whites.

    2023 Petit Chablis, Brigitte Cerveau

    £2500

Pale lemon in the glass, this Petit Chablis bursts with aromas of citrus, green apple, and crushed shell. The palate is taut and zesty – lemon zest and crisp orchard fruit gliding over a mineral backbone. Bright acidity keeps the finish sharp and saline.

For when: you want refreshment that’s sleek, simple, and spot on.
Pairs with: oysters, goat’s cheese, or lightly grilled white fish.
If this wine were a song, it’d be a clean acoustic riff that stays in your head.

Brigitte Cerveau’s vineyards lie on the higher slopes surrounding Chablis proper, where limestone soils give a lighter but equally vivid expression of Chardonnay. Her wines are noted for purity and clarity, capturing the bright, refreshing spirit of Petit Chablis.

    2021 Chardonnay, Ktima Gerovassiliou

    £2595

2021 was an excellent vintage, being cited as perhaps one of the best of the past 20 years in Epanomi. Perfumed aromas of melon, ripe pineapple and lemon combine with toasty butterscotch notes. Opulent, with a richly oaked texture, beautiful balance and spicy minerality on the finish.

The wine spent 7 months in French oak, which enhanced the creaminess and rich texture of this wine.

2023 ‘Roman Road’ Chardonnay, Simpsons Wine Estate

    £2595

Exuding a true sense of place, the Roman Road Chardonnay is elegant and pure, with a distinctive mineral quality that you would expect from fruit grown on the iconic chalk terroir of the Kentish North Downs.

Pale straw hued, with a complex matrix of tropical and citrus fruit, subtle butterscotch and flint on the nose, this Chardonnay shows excellent, ripe fruit intensity balanced with an elegant minerality, fresh citrus flavours and touches of cedar.

The 2018 vintage was awarded a Platinum Medal and the highest accolade of “Best in Show” in the Decanter World Wine Awards 2020. This title is only bestowed upon the top 50 wines entered into what is the largest and most influential, international wine competition. The 2020 vintage is a very worthy follow-up, reflecting the superb growing season and harvest of that year.

Simpsons Wine Estate is situated in the Elham Valley; an unspoilt seam in the North Downs of Kent where the contours of the land, the climate and the soil are excellent for viticulture. The intensely lime-rich chalk soil forms part of the same chalk ridge that stretches from southern England through Champagne and on to Burgundy. The grapes come from the Roman Road vineyard, named after the route the Romans first marched when invading England in AD 43. They are grown on south-facing slopes, ensuring heat accumulation in the day and cold air drainage at night. The vineyard is less than eight miles from the coast, providing a crucial maritime influence insulating the fruit against intense temperature variations.

    2020 Marmajuelo, Bodegas Vinatigo

    £2595

The Marmajuelo’s grape origin is still shrouded in mystery. Ever since winemaker Juan Jesus discovered a few vines in the late 1990s on the island of El Hierro, he has been completely in love with the variety and under his direction Bodegas Vinatigo has replanted it in the north-west of Tenerife. 25 hectares exist in the entire world, scattered across tiny plots in Tenerife and El Hierro, where the vineyards perch over the ocean and benefit from its cooling breezes.

The maritime freshness of these locations translates beautifully into the wine, with vibrant, saline acidity to complement the tropical aromas of passion fruit, pineapple and banana leaves. Textured, fresh and so persistent; a perfect wine to pair with seafood and fresh fish.

  • 2023 Koshu Private Reserve, Grace Winery

2023 Koshu Private Reserve, Grace Winery

    £2595

This wine is made from Japan’s most important indigenous grape variety, Koshu, which is grown in Japan’s top Koshu producing region: Katsunuma.

Pure, sublimely crisp and mineral in style, this wine is fresh and elegant with rich aromas of fresh pear, white peach, honeysuckle, rosemary, clove and mineral stone notes. Dry, with a lively palate of crisp, ripe fruits and a charming acidity which offers the wine great backbone, through to a hint of umami on the finish.

Situated at the eastern end of the Kofu basin, the Katsunuma’s area is an alluvial fan with well-drained soils, an area which has been suitable for viticulture since ancient times. The characteristic, intricate terrain with its complex, volcanic soils produces wines that distinguish the sense of place. The vines are grown at elevations of above 400 metres; these high- altitude, hilly areas such as the Toriihira in Katsunuma, Hishiyama and Fukasawa districts produce limited yields, concentrated flavours and balancing acidity, due to the diurnal temperature swings. Traditional trellis pruning has been cast aside in favour of a modern long cordon training system which helps to control yields; concentrating flavours and sugars to balance the high acidity that occurs naturally in this variety. In order to reduce the effects of autumn rain, each bunch is covered with an umbrella and the fruit is hand-picked at optimal maturity.

2021 Laurens Campher Chenin Blanc, Muratie

    £2595

Laurens Campher was a young German soldier who started farming at Muratie in 1685. This blend is a labour of love, much like Laurens’ love for Ansela van de Caab. Their love was ultimately rewarding, bringing about the birth of their three children, her freedom and the development of a farm that was only officially granted to Campher in 1699 but is still going strong over three centuries later.

This wine is made from meticulously sourced grapes from different sites and slopes. Vineyards vary in age from 10 – 15 years old. The Chenin Blanc is from an old north facing bush vine block with low yields and good fruit purity.

For all its freshness, elegance and focus, the wine’s flavours are complex and intense, ranging from bright lemon, fresh pineapple, apricots and juicy nectarine to more concentrated lime marmalade as well as caramel and cream (from barrel fermentation and 11 months of maturation in mostly older French oak). On the palate the initial impression is floral (heady honeysuckle) finishing with white peaches and apricots, with hints of citrus and a fresh acidity – great persistence promising enjoyment over at least five years.

    2023 Tiritiri Chardonnay, Neudorf

    £2595

This delicious Chardonnay walks a tightrope of fruit, minerality, oak and acidity. Summer stone fruits are woven together with rockpool minerality combined with a layered texture from lees contact and delicate integration of oak. There is beautiful shape to this wine, voluminous without being overblown and tapering to a refreshing and modern finish.

‘Tiritiri’ means to grow, cultivate or share in Reo Maori.

    2022 Holism Palomino, Swartberg Wingerde

    £2595

Swartberg Wingerde is the personal project of acclaimed South African winemaker Rudiger Gretschel, whose career includes roles at Boekenhoutskloof, Krone, and Reyneke Wines. Driven by a passion for sustainability and terroir expression, Gretschel established Swartberg Wingerde in the rugged Piekenierskloof region, renowned for its ancient, dry-farmed bush vines. The Holism range reflects a holistic approach to viticulture and winemaking, emphasising harmony between nature and human craftsmanship. The 2022 Holism Palomino is crafted from old-vine Palomino grapes, harvested by hand and fermented naturally, showcasing the unique character of this often-overlooked varietal.

In the glass, the 2022 Holism Palomino opens with delicate aromas of citrus blossom, ripe pear, and subtle mineral undertones. On the palate, it delivers a crisp and refreshing profile, with flavours of green apple, lemon zest, and a hint of almond. A gentle salinity and fine acidity provide balance, leading to a clean, lingering finish. This wine exemplifies the potential of Palomino in South Africa, offering a refined and elegant expression that pairs beautifully with seafood, light poultry dishes, or enjoyed on its own as an aperitif.

2022 Petit Chablis, Domaine Jean Goulley

    £2600

Domaine Jean Goulley was formed in 1986 by Jean Goulley and is now run by his granddaughter Maud. The Domaine is well regarded for their mineral style of Chablis’s that have a purity and vivacity that pays homage to the Chablis of the past.

2020 is a very fine vintage which is not easy to compare to other years. Although the grapes ripened very early in the year, the dry weather and absence of heat spikes meant that grape quality and health was exceptional. It has been described as ‘a very classic vintage’ and very different from 2018 and 2019. Many producers have described it as the best since 2014!

In the glass, this 2020 Petit Chablis is clean, fresh and appealing, with ripe crunchy green apple fruit and crisp acid keeping everything vibrant. An early drinking Petit Chablis that will give a lot of pleasure over the next 3-5 years.

Maud and her family believe in the ethos of organic farming along with that of minimal intervention; all of their vineyards are farmed organically. The vineyard is situated on the left bank of the River Sereine, where the vines are planted with an easterly orientation at an average altitude of 210 metres. The double Guyot trained vines are between 25 to 30 years old and are grown in Kimmeridgian soils, which are rich in clay and limestone with fossilised seashells. There is also the presence of Cailloux, large pebbles which help to promote ripening by absorbing the heat of the day and then radiating it at night. The vines are planted to a density of 5,700 vines per hectare and yields are kept to a maximum of 60 hectolitres per hectare. At Domaine Jean Goulley, they believe in highlighting terroir and produce their wines in an unoaked style, allowing them to reveal the purity, minerality and vitality of the soil.

Following fermentation the wine was aged for five months with skin contact which imparted complex aromatics to the wine. This may create a natural deposit in the bottle.

    2019 ‘Occhi di Ciumi’, Al-Cantara

    £2650

A beautifully fresh wine with tropical notes and a core of minerality shining through the spicy flavour, long and saline on the finish.

Made from a blend of Carricante and Grecanico. Carricante is an ancient white wine grape variety from eastern Sicily. It is thought to have been growing on the volcanic slopes of Mt Etna for at least a thousand years. Grecanico is one of the great varieties of white wine grape native to Italy, it is more commonly called Gargenega.

Occhi di Ciumi grapes are grown in a valley between the volcano and the Nebrodi Mountains, at approximately 620 metres above sea level. At this elevation, warm days and cool nights encourage a long ripening period concentrating the flavours in the grapes while retaining balancing acidity. The vines are grown in ash coloured volcanic soils, which are rich in minerals and fossils. The soil is permeable to air and water and is rich in pumice stone and microelements, which allow the plants to produce a complex aromatic profile. The 10 to 50 year old vines are cultivated following organic and biodynamic principles and the vineyard is in conversion to organic status.
