2020 Old Vine Chenin Blanc, Olifantsberg
£1595Add to BasketThis is a refined Chenin Blanc showing aromas of crisp green apples, white pear and delicate pineapple layered with subtle oak nuances. Rich and full, with a good depth of fruit and a refreshing feel to balance the rich and creamy palate.
The grapes were grown in unique sites from older vines that have an average age of 37 years. The grapes were hand-harvested and cooled overnight. Bunch sorting took place to ensure only the best grapes were vinified. Fermentation took place in a combination of vessels: 2,000-litre French oak foudres, seasoned barrels and stainless steel tanks. Each vessel resulted in a different expression of Chenin Blanc, imparting a layered dimension to the wine. The wine was aged for nine months on the lees in French oak, which contributed to the complexity and texture of the wine.

2021 Apostrophe Stone’s Throw White, Larry Cherubino
£1595Add to BasketThis vintage was awarded 94 pts by James Halliday
This delicious and refreshing homage to Alsace is made from grapes whose vineyards are located in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. Characterised by the influence of the Southern Ocean, which provides breezes from the Antarctic, chilling the grapes and making it an ideal growing climate for Riesling and Gewürztraminer and Pinot Blanc – varietals that excel at these lower temperatures.
Riesling’s cool lime and minerality meshes with Gewurztraminer’s exotic spice and rose water. The softly textured palate has a long, refreshing acidity supported by citrus notes and rose petal on the finish.
The wine is called Stone’s Throw because the Riesling and Gewürztraminer are planted a stone’s throw from each other in the same vineyard.

2020 Sauvignon Blanc, Mulderbosch
£1595Add to BasketMulderbosch Sauvignon Blanc was one of the vanguards of the South African industry in the early 1990s; it was memorably described by Jancis Robinson as ‘the Cloudy Bay of South Africa’. The playing field has evolved significantly since then, and in order to remain distinctive, Mulderbosch began ageing their Sauvignon Blanc in neutral 500-litre barrels from the 2016 vintage.
This 2020 vintage is unmistakably Sauvignon in character, with striking citrus aromas and a hint of herbal lemon-grass on the nose. Green fig flavours on the palate are lifted by natural acidity and balanced by a firm, chalky texture.
The grapes come from Mulderbosh’s estate vineyard and from the slopes of Simonsberg, the Polkadraai ward and vineyards close to False Bay on the lower slopes of the Helderberg. Some of the vineyards are within two and a half miles of False Bay, where the strong influence of the Atlantic Ocean has a cooling effect during the warmest months of the year, encouraging balancing acidity to the concentrated fruit produced in this warm region.

2020 The Broken Fishplate Sauvignon Blanc, d’Arenberg
£1595Add to BasketA flashy sauvignon blanc offering lashings of tropicals such as passionfruit and gooseberry on the highly aromatic nose, boosted by an undercurrent of fresh cut grass and asparagus. The palate is refreshingly crisp and mineral. Vibrant citrus-like acid is a real feature. But this is accompanied by the generosity in flavour and a hint of added texture through some very light-handed oak treatment and a small dose of wild ferment. Balanced and long, served chilled this wine will hit the spot on a warm, sunny day.
Despite being a good match for fish, the name has nothing to do with them! A fishplate is a term for the nylon plates that collect grape bunches on a harvester and often break when navigating around the steep, windy vineyards.

2020 ‘Ocean’ Thrapsathiri, Idaia Winery
£1595Add to BasketA bright, uplifting wine, with delicate fruit aromas followed by a rich and charming palate beautifully balanced by a crisp finish.
The indigenous variety of Thrapshathiri (pronounced Thrap-sah-THEE-ree) is grown in the Dafnes region, in vineyards located at an altitude of 400 to 500 metres above sea level. At this elevation, the cool Aegean summer breezes refresh the vines during the summer, when temperatures can reach 35°C. The cooler nights can drop to 15°C and this diurnal temperature difference retains natural acidity in the grapes, balancing this rich and intensely aromatic variety.

2018 Chardonnay Costa & Pampa, Trapiche
£1650Add to BasketThis cool-climate coastal Chardonnay was the brainchild of Trapiche winemaker Daniel Pi and his vision has produced sublime wine. In the glass, it is a golden colour with slight greenish tones, the nose has notes of green apples, pear and hints of toast and butter. It is fresh in the mouth with a marked mineral presence and a long and unctuous finish.
Described by Decanter Magazine as ‘a pure style that’s astonishingly affordable.’
Awarded 97+ points by Oz Clarke who described the 2018 Chardonnay: ‘Up there with the best Chardonnays, I have tasted from Argentina. The vineyards are on the coast just south of Buenos Aires – an experiment, a risk, a dream – and it works; this beauty swirls with oatmeal, hazelnut, soft white apple flesh, peach and honey. It’s scented with apple blossom and honeysuckle and its lemon acidity is as subtle as the cotton that threads through a silken bedsheet.’

2017 Blanc, Olifantsberg
£1650Add to BasketThe vision was to produce a great white Rhône style blend from the Breedekloof region. This beautifully layered wine with opulent fruit flavours of white peach, ripe apricot and delicate citrus notes complemented by hints of floral and dried green herbs. The palate is rich, textured and elegant.
The vineyard is located on the fertile slopes of the Olifantsberg Mountain Range at altitudes from 250 metres to 450 metres above sea level. It endures harsh conditions, with wide diurnal temperature swings and strong winds. During the winter the mountain peaks are snow-covered, keeping the vines dormant for longer. Cold winters, coupled with the summer winds, ensures the slow ripening of the grapes and helps to maintain healthy vines, contributing freshness and elegance to the wines. The vineyards are farmed using sustainable practices, helping to maintain the biodiversity within the vineyard and soils. The Roussanne and Grenache Blanc are young plantings on the estate and are grown on shale soils, the Chenin Blanc is grown on sandstone/shale soils, which lends freshness to the wine. The training is ‘sur eschalas’ in order to maximise the number of vines per hectare and to protect them from strong winds.

2020 ‘1753’ Viognier, Château de Campuget
£1695Add to BasketAn elegant Viognier with hints of nectarine, ginger and honeysuckle. Precise, crisp and balanced on the palate, with a roundness of generously structured fruit and a long, elegant finish.
The vineyard that this Viognier comes from is situated 15 kilometres south of Nîmes, near the village of Manduel, in the heart of the ‘Appellation d’Origine Protégée’ of the Costières de Nîmes. The average age of the vines is about 25 years. The main characteristic of the vineyard is the soil, which is formed of ‘gress’, an accumulation of rounded pebbles that have been deposited by the overflowing Rhône River thousands of years ago. These pebbles allow the vines to grow in the best possible conditions and due to this natural soil filter; the vine’s roots can easily draw the necessary water for their growth. The vines also benefit from the Mediterranean sunshine, which brings the grapes to perfect maturity and allows them to be picked at maximum phenolic maturity which assured elegance in the resulting wine.

2021 The Money Spider Organic Roussanne, d’Arenberg
£1695Add to BasketThere’s a real ‘standing in a field during spring’ vibe to this wine. Lots of golden sunshine, cut-straw, and yellow peach flavours. It’s round, and generous, with substantial palate weight and mouthfeel. It’s rich, toasty, and opulent.
The name of the wine originates from the fact that the first crop of Roussanne from the 2000 vintage was covered in tiny ‘Money Spiders’. Popular belief is that kindness to these creatures will bring good luck, so Chester refrained from sending the spiders to their death. By the next year, the Money Spiders had relocated, making the first release of this wine in 2001.
