2023 ‘1753’ Viognier, Château de Campuget

    £1695

An elegant Viognier with hints of nectarine, ginger and honeysuckle. Precise, crisp and balanced on the palate, with a roundness of generously structured fruit and a long, elegant finish.

The vineyard that this Viognier comes from is situated 15 kilometres south of Nîmes, near the village of Manduel, in the heart of the ‘Appellation d’Origine Protégée’ of the Costières de Nîmes. The average age of the vines is about 25 years. The main characteristic of the vineyard is the soil, which is formed of ‘gress’, an accumulation of rounded pebbles that have been deposited by the overflowing Rhône River thousands of years ago. These pebbles allow the vines to grow in the best possible conditions and due to this natural soil filter; the vine’s roots can easily draw the necessary water for their growth. The vines also benefit from the Mediterranean sunshine, which brings the grapes to perfect maturity and allows them to be picked at maximum phenolic maturity which assured elegance in the resulting wine.

2021 The Money Spider Organic Roussanne, d’Arenberg

    £1695

There’s a real ‘standing in a field during spring’ vibe to this wine. Lots of golden sunshine, cut-straw, and yellow peach flavours. It’s round, and generous, with substantial palate weight and mouthfeel. It’s rich, toasty, and opulent.

The name of the wine originates from the fact that the first crop of Roussanne from the 2000 vintage was covered in tiny ‘Money Spiders’. Popular belief is that kindness to these creatures will bring good luck, so Chester refrained from sending the spiders to their death. By the next year, the Money Spiders had relocated, making the first release of this wine in 2001.

2023 Altesse ‘Madame de M…’, Domaine Vendange

    £1695

With a brioche opening, complex aromas of floral blossom, spice and flinty notes surround a core of pear and citrus. Intense and precise, the textured palate is lively, balanced and underpinned by elegant mineral notes. Drink now to 2030.

The Domaine de Vendange estate extends over 10 hectares, planted on south-facing slopes where the local Savoie grape varieties fully express their typicity. The 30- year old Jacquère vines yield 65 hectolitres per hectare. The soils are formed of glacial moraine; they are very young limestone soils made up of limestone scree, with layers of silty clay, which produce elegant, fresh wines. The vines are planted at 400 metres’ elevation, yet despite the altitude and mountainous location, the summers are surprisingly hot. This distinctive microclimate encourages the grapes to reach optimum maturity with concentrated juice, balanced by mountain-cool freshness. The vines are cultivated using integrated agriculture practices, maintaining the greatest respect for terroir and tradition. The focus is on green harvesting with pruning, debudding, trellising and leaf stripping. All grapes are hand-harvested. In 2021, the domain moved into conversion to organic status.

The mature vines are gnarled and sculpted by time, yielding small amounts of intensely flavoured fruit to create wines that are the ultimate expression of their terroir.

  • <a href="https://wine-republic.co.uk/product/2024-viognier-tahbilk/">2024 Viognier, Tahbilk</a>

    2024 Viognier, Tahbilk

    £1695

This delicious Viognier from a dry vintage has an intense and fragrant nose of rose petal and ginger spice leading to a softly textured palate of apricot, peach and honeydew melon characters. All this lifted by a deliciously zesty acidity on the finish.

“Our 2020 Estate whites will be remembered for their lifted fruit intensity, with no better example than this Viognier release. Vivacious ginger, rose petal and citrus blossom aromas are a siren’s song temptation to a textural palate of stone fruit and honeysuckle characters.” – Alister Purbrick ~ Tahbilk Winemaker & CEO

Tahbilk’s relationship with the varietals that call France’s Rhone Valley home can be traced back to our earliest days with a good deal of fortuitous luck leading to the establishment of that connection rather than a grand plan looking ahead over 160 years!
Prior to taking possession of what would become the Tahbilk Estate, one of the directors placed an advertisement in the leading newspapers of Melbourne, Geelong, Adelaide and Sydney for 1,000,000 vines. This resulted in the Tabilk Vineyard Company (as we were known then) receiving around 600,000 vine cuttings, among which was the white ‘Rhone’ varietal, Marsanne.
Marsanne being the solo ‘Rhone’ whites’ flag-waver for the Estate ended in 1990 with the successful planting of Viognier and Roussanne.
Marsanne will always be the undisputed leader of this trio, but there is no doubt that each of these two relatively new Estate ‘Rhone’s’ are showing that they have to have admirably embraced their adopted homeland.

The vines are planted at 1,000 meters above sea level and benefit from large diurnal temperature variations which result in a longer growing season. The heat assists in the promotion of sugar levels in the ripening grapes, while the coolness of the night retains acidity levels, achieving healthy and balanced berries.

  • <a href="https://wine-republic.co.uk/product/2022-sauvignon-blanc-baleia-wines/">2022 Sauvignon Blanc, Baleia Wines</a>

    2022 Sauvignon Blanc, Baleia Wines

    £1725

Baleia is a place of whales and wonder, where wines are born from rocky limestone soil in a remote and unspoilt corner of the Cape South Coast. Here vines overcome fierce elements to create fruit with singular character and depth of flavour. Beyond evocative wine, Baleia is also about finding harmony between self, others and nature in pursuit of life’s perfect equilibrium.

This Sauvignon Blanc is lovely and juicy with tropical fruits such as passion fruit and lychee dancing on the palate with saline undertones from the mineral soil in which it is grown.

Making Sauvignon Blanc one is often faced with the temptation of making very upfront and unnuanced wines that lack a sense of place. Baleia has chosen to take the road less travelled by choosing texture and minerality from the site to portray the beauty of the terroir.
