  • 2020 Domaine Gauby`Calcinaires` Blanc IGP Cotes CatalanesWhite Wine

2020 Domaine Gauby`Calcinaires` Blanc IGP Cotes Catalanes

    £2595

Domaine Gauby is located close to the small town of Calce in the Roussillon. Now run by Gérard Gauby, his wife Ghislaine and their son Lionel, who is responsible for the winemaking, the domaine has gained a reputation for making wines of exemplary freshness in a hot climate.

This 2020 `Calcinaires` Blanc has a fresh nose with delicate aromas of white flowers and notes of peach and quince. The palate is expressive with layers of citrus and stone fruit. A bright acidity is underpinned by a long mineral finish.

This blend of 40% Grenache Blanc, 30% Chardonnay, 20% Macabeu, and 10% Vermentino is sourced from a mixture of old and young vines planted on clay loam and limestone. The Chardonnay vines are average 45 years old and the Macabeu 80 years old, which gives the grapes great concentration. The Roussillon has incredibly diverse soils which, combined with the multiple aspects from the rolling hills, has given Gérard Gauby the freedom to experiment and maximise the potential of each grape variety.

  • 2020 Barrel Fermented Sauvignon Blanc, Lismore Wine Republic Heros White Wine

2020 Barrel Fermented Sauvignon Blanc, Lismore

    £2595

Lismore Estate is based in Greyton within the Overberg region of the Western Cape of South Africa.  It’s here with the Sonderend mountains as a backdrop that winemaker & proprietor Samantha O’Keefe makes her fabulous wines.   ‘ I had a farm in Africa….’  The opening line of Karen Blixen’s classic memoir Out Of Africa comes to mind when you hear Samantha’s amazing story.

We love barrel-fermented Sauvignon Blanc at Wine Republic and this beauty is made in an “oxidative” style using old 500-litre barrels for 70% of the fermentation and maturation bringing forward richness, intense fruit and complexity. 30% of the wine is fermented and aged in 1500-litre concrete egg tanks to enhance the rich palate texture and minerality. In both the barrels and the eggs, extended less contact adds complexity and a richer, creamy texture which works beautifully with the bright citrus and fresh herb notes and salty minerality from the grape.

2020 Saint-Veran Les Terres Noires, Domaine Des Deux Roches

    £2795

Domaine des Deux Roches translates as ‘Estate of the Two Rocks’, a reference to the position of this wine estate between the two distinctive, rocky escarpments of Solutre and Vergisson, in the Maconnais area of southern Burgundy. 2020 Saint Joesph, Domaine Courbis

    £2895

This 2020 St Joesph shows the full character of its appellation in the attractive Courbis house style. In the glass, it is a refined wine with aromatic notes of ripe red fruits and blackcurrant characters that lead to a harmoniously balanced and fleshy palate. Hints of violet enhance the intense fruit flavours, which are supported by fine, silky tannins.  This cuvée comes from various vineyard parcels across the Courbis domaine, blended to produce a wine ready for near term drinking upon release.

Saint Joseph is situated at the confluence of the Rhône and Isère rivers on the right bank of the Rhône. Domaine Courbis owns the most southern parcels of the Saint Joseph appellation, on very steep and terraced slopes, with a southern and eastern orientation. The soils comprise 30% clay and limestone, and 70% decomposed granite, which retains the heat from the day and promotes a long slow ripening period for the grapes.

  • 2020 Chenin Blanc, Lismore Wine Republic Heros White Wine

    2020 Chenin Blanc, Lismore

    £2900

Lismore Estate is based in Greyton within the Overberg region of the Western Cape of South Africa.  It’s here with the Sonderend mountains as a backdrop that winemaker & proprietor Samantha O’Keefe makes her fabulous wines.

This is Samantha’s first Chenin Blanc release and with only 2000 bottles produced it is a very rare beast!  We have 12 bottles arriving in May 22 and that’s it!

Greg Sherwood MW had his to say about in January – ” Made from grapes grown in Stanford with a small portion of skin contact, this maiden Chenin Blanc from Samantha O’Keefe is deliciously focused, pure and precise with a pronounced stony minerality of crushed gravel over lemon and tangerine peel, tart pear, white peach and flinty nuances suggesting a hint of reduction. Counter-intuitively, the palate is explosive and intense, bristling with green apple pastille, crunchy pear, liquid minerality infused with fresh fennel, dried herbs and hints of fynbos. But ultimately, this wine is defined by its uniquely taut, glassy acids that are cool, linear, crystalline and electrically fresh. A lovely lean, cool-climate expression of Chenin Blanc fruit! Drink from 2022 to 2034+

    £2900

Domaine Jean Goulley is well regarded for their mineral style of Chablis’s that have a purity and vivacity that pays homage to the Chablis of the past.

2020 is a very fine vintage which is not easy to compare to other years. Although the grapes ripened very early in the year, the dry weather and absence of heat spikes meant that grape quality and health was exceptional.   It has been described as ‘a very classic vintage’ and very different from 2018 and 2019.   Many producers have described it as the best since 2014!

In the glass, this 2020 Chablis has layers of concentration, with wonderful purity of fruit and the typical undertow of minerality that Goulley is renowned for.  A fine thread of acidity focuses everything on the palate and the finish is mouthwatering.

Domaine Jean Goulley was formed in 1986 by Jean Goulley and is now run by his granddaughter Maud.  Maud and her family believe in the ethos of organic farming along with that of minimal intervention; all of their vineyards are farmed organically. The vineyard is situated on the left bank of the River Sereine, where the vines are planted with an easterly orientation at an average altitude of 210 metres. The double Guyot trained vines are between 25 to 30 years old and are grown in Kimmeridgian soils, which are rich in clay and limestone with fossilised seashells. There is also the presence of Cailloux, large pebbles which help to promote ripening by absorbing the heat of the day and then radiating it at night. The vines are planted to a density of 5,700 vines per hectare and yields are kept to a maximum of 60 hectolitres per hectare. At Domaine Jean Goulley, they believe in highlighting terroir and produce their wines in an unoaked style, allowing them to reveal the purity, minerality and vitality of the soil.

  • 2020 Three, Constantia GlenRed Wine

    2020 Three, Constantia Glen

    £3100

This delicious three-way blend was carefully crafted from grapes grown on the estate. It comprises 55% Merlot, 26% Cabernet Franc and 19% Cabernet Sauvignon and was matured for 17 months in 30% new, 50% second fill- and 20% third fill French oak barrels. The wine was not fined, but only lightly filtered prior to bottling to subtly mellow the rich tannin structure. This vintage shows the phenomenal structure and freshness that has become synonymous to the Constantia Glen THREE, but also has excellent concentration. This means that it can be enjoyed in its youth, yet it will certainly age and develop admirably for another 10-12 years under correct cellaring conditions.

In the glass, the nose of this wine has great expression with forthcoming red and black fruit aromas. Following these initial ripe fruit aromas, there is a complex collection of savoury notes woven with lingering flavours of tomato leaf, blackcurrant, and cedar.  The palate shows great intensity and complexity of flavours with the dark fruit and distinct savoury notes on the nose following flawlessly onto that first sip. The fine-grain, elegant and velvety tannins really compliment the richness of the wine and promise great aging potential if stored under correct cellar conditions. This full-bodied blend has an earthy minerality and an inherent freshness that brings about a lingering, well-defined finish.

The vineyards that the grapes come from for this wine are tucked in the steep valley on the eastern side of Table Mountain. The climate is Mediterranean with cooling breezes from the Atlantic Ocean encouraging balance and complexity in the grapes, this combined with the cool southern slopes and deep mountain soils provide the ideal setting for the making of these top quality wines.
