2014 Vermentino, Chalmers
£2000Add to BasketChalmers make incredible characterful wines from Mediterranean grape varieties that they have imported, cultivated in vineyards in Heathcote, Victoria. They released Australia’s first Vermentino wine in 2004 and it’s since become a trademark line in the range, their ‘go-to’ white. There are now more than 100 winemakers working with the grape across Australia and it’s no wonder when it loves the sunshine and makes such delicious wines with ultimate drinkability.
Chalmers Vermentino is a truly unique iteration of the Mediterranean grape and this 2014 vintage marks a decade of Vermentino in Australia. It opens in the glass with aromas of soft stonefruit, herbs and sea spray that is so distinctive to the Vermentino grape. The palate is lively and racy with lovely savoury overtones. Think white nectarine, Amalfi lemons, Italian herbs and a crushed rock minerality as well as that gorgeous sea saltiness associated with the grape. We love this wine at WR!
The grapes come from the Chalmers vineyard in Heathcote and are grown on rich, red Cambrian soil, sitting 150-170m above sea level. The grapes are handpicked, whole bunch pressed with wild fermentation before the wine sits on less for 6 months.

2018 The Derelict Vineyard Grenache, d’Arenberg
£2095Add to Basket2018 was an exceptional year for Grenache in the McLaren Vale. An absolute abundance of fruit on the nose, with all the classics, blueberry, plum, liquorice, spice and earth. The palate too is full of presence. Juicy and generous but with a seam of crunchy tannin and lively acid that add structure and fresh punch to the wine. All of these big rich fruits are wrapped around a graphite almost ferrous like framework. Immediately drinkable but undoubtedly a Grenache built for time. If enjoying young be sure to decant or at a minimum allow it to breath in the glass. Your patience will reward you.
The name of the wine is inspired by the time in the 1980s and early 90s when Grenache was considered unfashionable, Chester acquired many old bush vine, overgrown and abandoned vineyards. These vineyards still have a slightly dishevelled appearance, but they are back producing very low yields of exceptional fruit.

2018 Dark Prince Nero d’Avola, Fox Gordon
£2095Add to BasketOpulent yet silky, this delicious wine reveals stunning aromas of deep fruits which are enhanced by notes of Sarsaparilla and lifted floral notes of red roses. Fine supple tannins and a hint of oak lead to a rich finish.
The Fox Gordon estate vineyards are located in the Adelaide Hills, overlooking McLaren Vale. Nestled in a natural amphitheatre, the vines are planted at an elevation of 380 metres above sea level, where cooling breezes from the ocean less than 18 kilometres away influences the microclimate. The vines are approximately 14 years old and are planted at the top of a hill at an altitude of 480 metres above sea level. It is a rocky site, which suits this very vigorous variety as the site has very little topsoil, slowing down the vigour.

2021 Estate Pinot Gris, Paringa Estate
£2095Add to BasketThis superb Pinot Gris has lifted varietal aromas of fresh-cut pear and green apple, leading to a refreshing palate of crisp, ripe pear and vibrant citrus fruit flavours. This Pinot Gris is richly flavoured with a lovely mid-palate texture and balance.
The grapes for this wine come from 2 vineyards. The 1st is situated in the cool climate sub-region of Red Hill at an altitude of 146 metres above sea level. The estate vines are 14 years old and they provide 50% of the fruit for this wine. The remaining 50% comes from a contracted grower in Moorooduc which is a slightly warmer site and adds complexity and a layered dimension to the wine. The Mornington Peninsula is influenced by the cooling maritime climate, which helps the grapes to retain acidity as they ripen. The soils are generally red basalt, which stores sufficient water supplies to keep the vine irrigated through the warm summer season. These soils are the result of ancient lava flows, are iron-rich, moderately fertile and drain surface water easily. This results in healthy vines with deep root systems, producing high-quality berries that translate into intense, concentrated wines.

2017 ‘Elizabeth Cellar Aged’ Semillon, Mount Pleasant
£2100Add to BasketMount Pleasant, based in the Hunter Valley, was established in 1921 by the legendary winemaker Maurice O’Shea, from 16.3 hectares of adjoining parcels of land, which he named Mount Pleasant.
Classic citrus characters of lime and lemongrass are predominant with a wonderful intensity and purity. An elegant yet intense palate of pure Semillon fruit providing great line and length.
Inspired by the first visit of a reigning monarch to Australia in 1954, the ‘Cellar Aged Elizabeth’ is the result of the synergy achieved by combining the noble grape variety Semillon and the Hunter Valley terroir. The Semillon grapes are grown in the estate vineyards in the Pokolbin subregion of the Hunter Valley. The vineyard is cultivated using sustainable techniques, such as employing mulch to nourish the vines and growing cover crops to increase the biodiversity in the soil. This sustainable approach has resulted in some of the healthiest vines on the estate in recent years; the vines have developed plentiful canopies which have assisted in preventing sunburn of the fruit.

In the glass the nose has a perfumed lift of jasmine, orange blossom spice and lemon zest. The palate is full-flavoured with excellent fruit concentration and texture. Flavours of lemon, lime zest and pith prevail, with hints of citrus spice and succulent, juicy acidity emerging thereafter. Structurally, this wine has impressive length, a lively natural acid backbone and a mouth-wateringly powerful finish.
Drink now with fish, seafood or white meat dishes, or cellar for 5 years or more.
With cool and dry weather, the 2021 vintage in the Clare Valley produced lovely fruit with excellent varietal character and natural acidity. The cool growing season was preceded by late-winter and early-spring rains which allowed for good spring growth on the vines. This was followed by below average rainfall and dry conditions for the remainder of the season, resulting in a vintage that produced beautiful and classic Clare wines with smaller bunches and grapes therefore reducing Riesling yield.

2012 Fiano, Chalmers
£2200Add to BasketThe high acid, bold flavoured Campanian grape Fiano has really found it’s second home in Australia, especially in Heathcote where it regularly outshines the red grapes on the same site in a traditional red-wine growing region. Chalmers have a museum of Fiano wines dating back over a decade with even the older wines still singing. The 2012 Chalmers Fiano is no exception, melding delicate stone fruits and almond blossom with savoury lees contact characters and minerality, displaying texture and power in the mouth whilst retaining a fine, fresh finish.
Chalmers Fiano is whole bunch pressed and fermented on solids, 10% in old French oak barriques, 90% in stainless steel tanks without yeast addition. The temperature of fermentation is limited to 15 degrees. After fermentation is finished the wine rests on lees in tank for 6 – 9 months before being bottled. 2019 Laissez Faire Syrah, Larry Cherubino
£2250Add to BasketLaissez-Faire means “let it be” and this reflects the hands-off approach that winemaker Larry Cherubino uses when making this striking Syrah. A bouquet of black cherries is enveloped in subtle mineral nuances and supporting oak spice. Red flowery fruit flavours dominate, with subtle slate-like minerality following through onto the elegant palate, all framed by fine tannins through to a long finish.
While inspiration has been taken from organics, biodynamics and natural winemaking practices, the Laissez Faire range could be called ‘natural wines’; Larry Cherubino likes to think of them as “post-natural” wines. Believing in healthy and sustainable vineyard practices, Larry grows all his own grapes and can account for their provenance and natural status. While copper is allowed in organic viticulture, minimal copper treatments are used here. The grapes for this wine are grown in the subregions of Frankland River and Porongurup, in the Great Southern, which are considered to be two of the most distinctive viticulture areas in Australia.
