  • 2019 Laissez Faire Syrah, Larry Cherubino Wine Republic Heros Red Wine

2019 Laissez Faire Syrah, Larry Cherubino

    £2250

Laissez-Faire means “let it be” and this reflects the hands-off approach that winemaker Larry Cherubino uses when making this striking Syrah.  A bouquet of black cherries is enveloped in subtle mineral nuances and supporting oak spice. Red flowery fruit flavours dominate, with subtle slate-like minerality following through onto the elegant palate, all framed by fine tannins through to a long finish.

While inspiration has been taken from organics, biodynamics and natural winemaking practices, the Laissez Faire range could be called ‘natural wines’; Larry Cherubino likes to think of them as “post-natural” wines. Believing in healthy and sustainable vineyard practices, Larry grows all his own grapes and can account for their provenance and natural status. While copper is allowed in organic viticulture, minimal copper treatments are used here. The grapes for this wine are grown in the subregions of Frankland River and Porongurup, in the Great Southern, which are considered to be two of the most distinctive viticulture areas in Australia.

  • 2017 Shiraz ‘Watervale Single Vineyard’, Jim Barry Wine Republic Heros Red Wine

2017 Shiraz ‘Watervale Single Vineyard’, Jim Barry

    £2250

This 2017 Shiraz comes from a single-vineyard sourced from the Florita vineyard in Watervale.  The Shiraz block is planted on a gentle northwest facing slope that takes full advantage of Clare Valley climate.

It is an opulent wine with expressive aromas of rich, bright red fruits that are supported by classic Clare Valley spice. Beautifully structured with fine savoury tannins and terrific length of vibrant fruit on the palate.  This is not your typical Clare Valley Shiraz!   The opulent nature of the wine could be due to winemaking that saw one-third of the grapes being co-fermented with 15% of whole bunch fruit to impart complexity and an aromatic lift to the wine.   The wine then went through malolactic fermentation (a process where tart malic acid in wine converts to softer, creamier lactic acid) before being transferred to oak barrels for 12 months of ageing.

    A terrific mouthful of wine!

  • 2011 Aglianico, Chalmers Wine Republic Heros Red Wine

    2011 Aglianico, Chalmers

    £2350

In Southern Italy, Aglianico is hailed as the noblest of red varieties. In Australia, it has proven to produce wines of finesse, structure and elegance in the most adverse of climatic conditions. At Chalmers, the Aglianico wines have always been considered top-tier reds within the range. To reflect that the latest planting has been established on the prized, top elevation, rocky site on the ridge of the Mt Camel Range at the Heathcote vineyard which is similar in characteristics to the variety’s native terroir.

This 2011 Aglianico shows earthy cherry, aromatic spice and delicate petal perfume on the nose. The balanced, savoury palate shows subtle fruitcake spices, tobacco, leather, herbal notes and candied orange rind with a pleasant mouth-watering acidity and the fine, smooth, building tannins you would expect of the variety. • 2013 Sagrantino, ChalmersRed Wine

    2013 Sagrantino, Chalmers

    £2350

Chalmers make incredible characterful wines from Mediterranean grape varieties that they have imported, cultivated in vineyards in Heathcote, Victoria.  This amazing Sagrantino has an invitingly sumptuous nose of rich, ripe fruit and savoury herbal complexity. There is a wonderful sense of completeness in the mouth: velvety texture, cinnamon and spicy dried fruit flavours and a concentrated maturity reminiscent of rare, oak-aged balsamic vinegar and soy sauce. Superbly rounded and well-balanced.

One of the most tannic varieties in the world, Sagrantino is a relatively small player in Italy where there are only about 250 hectares of the grape grown in the Montefalco region of Umbria. Despite this, it is a highly revered wine with DOCG status since 1992. It has been growing in Australia since 2000 with the first Australian wine made by Chalmers in 2004. There are now a number of producers making great examples of the variety which has proven to perform fantastically well in both extreme heat/drought conditions and wet vintages like 2010 and 2011.

  • 2013 Nero d’Avola, Chalmers Wine Republic Heros Red Wine

    2013 Nero d’Avola, Chalmers

    £2350

The Chalmers family’s commitment to innovation and excellence has made them a pivotal force in the Australian wine scene for over 20 years. This is illustrated by the fact that first Nero d’Avola vine was imported by Chalmers in 2001 and that one little vine has evolved into more than 200,000 vines planted all over Australia.

The grape has really found a synergy with the red soils of Heathcote, particularly in the top block where the Chalmers Nero d’Avola is grown. The combination of the lightness and charry/graphite notes of that site with the cherry/raspberry, tar and hard herb characters of Nero d’Avola is a great match.  Chalmers deliberately go for a crunchy style which gives an enchanting, vibrant and juicy wine.

The palate displays a wonderful balance between acid and sweetness, giving that Dry Dam hallmark of sherbet-like character. Full of flavour yet pristine and refined. Drinks perfectly well young but promises to age well, developing toasty, marmalade notes for beyond a decade.

The Name. : In 1992 d’Arenberg’s neighbours built a dam that remained empty, as it was a dry winter. The next year it rained but the dam was jinxed and didn’t hold water. A dry dam was bad news for d’Arenberg’s neighbouring farmers but promises good results for their old, dry-grown, low-yielding vines.
