2020 Piekenierskloof Grenache, Marras
£1575Add to BasketThe grapes for the Piekenierskloof Grenache are handpicked, destemmed and crushed first thing the next morning to retain freshness. The fruit enjoys a cold soak for three days to aid extraction and is then partially fermented in old oak barrels for 10 months. Ripe cherry and wild strawberry on the nose and palate. This wine is bright and round and beautifully knitted with a fine minerality to the finish.

2020 Sauvignon Blanc, Mulderbosch
£1595Add to BasketMulderbosch Sauvignon Blanc was one of the vanguards of the South African industry in the early 1990s; it was memorably described by Jancis Robinson as ‘the Cloudy Bay of South Africa’. The playing field has evolved significantly since then, and in order to remain distinctive, Mulderbosch began ageing their Sauvignon Blanc in neutral 500-litre barrels from the 2016 vintage.
This 2020 vintage is unmistakably Sauvignon in character, with striking citrus aromas and a hint of herbal lemon-grass on the nose. Green fig flavours on the palate are lifted by natural acidity and balanced by a firm, chalky texture.
The grapes come from Mulderbosh’s estate vineyard and from the slopes of Simonsberg, the Polkadraai ward and vineyards close to False Bay on the lower slopes of the Helderberg. Some of the vineyards are within two and a half miles of False Bay, where the strong influence of the Atlantic Ocean has a cooling effect during the warmest months of the year, encouraging balancing acidity to the concentrated fruit produced in this warm region.

2018 Pinotage, Olifantsberg
£1595Add to BasketBright notes of cherry, wild strawberry fruit and ripe raspberry are interlaced by hints of spice and earthy notes. This wine is made in a pure fruit-driven style, with supple tannins and reveals a fresh and elegant expression of Pinotage.
The vineyard is located on the fertile slopes of the Olifantsberg Mountain Range where it endures wide diurnal temperature differences and strong winds, at altitudes from 250 to 450 metres above sea level. During the winter the mountain peaks are snow-covered, keeping the vines dormant for longer. Cold winters, coupled with the summer winds, ensures the slow ripening of the grapes; helps to maintain healthy vines; and contributes freshness and elegance to the wines. The soils in the vineyard comprise a unique sandy shale with a clay subsoil, which lends structure to the resulting wine. The Pinotage trellised vines are 11 years old and are farmed in a sustainable manner.

£1650Add to BasketThe vision was to produce a great white Rhône style blend from the Breedekloof region. This beautifully layered wine with opulent fruit flavours of white peach, ripe apricot and delicate citrus notes complemented by hints of floral and dried green herbs. The palate is rich, textured and elegant.
The vineyard is located on the fertile slopes of the Olifantsberg Mountain Range at altitudes from 250 metres to 450 metres above sea level. The vineyards are farmed using sustainable practices, helping to maintain the biodiversity within the vineyard and soils. The Roussanne and Grenache Blanc are young plantings on the estate and are grown on shale soils, the Chenin Blanc is grown on sandstone/shale soils, which lends freshness to the wine. The training is ‘sur eschalas’ in order to maximise the number of vines per hectare and to protect them from strong winds.

2020 Swartland Rouge, Kloof Street
£1675Add to BasketProduced by Chris and Andrea Mullineux, the Kloof Street wines represent balance, freshness and superb value. They act as the perfect starting point for discovering Swartland’s wines. It is immediately evident in the glass that as much care goes into these wines as Mullineux’s Single Terroir Syrahs and Chenin Blancs.
The spicy perfumed nose has undertones of dark fruits. Each variety in the blend adds balance to the wine. Tinta Barocca brings tannin, Cinsault brings perfume, Carignan brings freshness, Grenache brings fruit character, and the Syrah ties it all together.
A blend of eight vineyard parcels, this wine is made from sustainably farmed fruit sourced from different parts of the Swartland. The vines are aged between 12 – 40 years. Two parcels of Syrah and one of Cinsault come from the stony shale and schist-based soils of Kasteelberg, which retain heat well and aid in the ripening of bold fruit. One parcel of dry-land, bush vine Syrah, one of Carignan, one of Grenache and a single parcel of gnarly, old, dry-farmed Tinta Barocca bush vines are all grown on the decomposed granite soil of the Paardeberg. This soil promotes the production of complex wines with lifted acidity. The final parcel is Mourvèdre grown on the rolling, iron-rich soils west of Malmesbury.

This Sauvignon Blanc is lovely and juicy with tropical fruits such as passion fruit and lychee dancing on the palate with saline undertones from the mineral soil in which it is grown.
Making Sauvignon Blanc one is often faced with the temptation of making very upfront and unnuanced wines that lack a sense of place. Baleia has chosen to take the road less travelled by choosing texture and minerality from the site to portray the beauty of the terroir.

£1725Add to BasketWine from Rock – Made from Tempranillo and Syrah grapes grown in pure limestone soils, that are so hard and rocky that the vine struggles to grow and thus yields a small, concentrated crop. Baleia respect the fruit by making use of amphorae and large wooden foudres in the cellar, which highlights the unique minerality and makes for a tantalizing wine bursting with character.

2022 Old Vine Chenin Blanc, Olifantsberg
£1795Add to BasketThis is a refined Chenin Blanc showing aromas of crisp green apples, white pear and delicate pineapple layered with subtle oak nuances. Rich and full, with a good depth of fruit and a refreshing feel to balance the rich and creamy palate.
The grapes were grown in unique sites from older vines that have an average age of 37 years. The grapes were hand-harvested and cooled overnight. Bunch sorting took place to ensure only the best grapes were vinified. Fermentation took place in a combination of vessels: 2,000-litre French oak foudres, seasoned barrels and stainless steel tanks. Each vessel resulted in a different expression of Chenin Blanc, imparting a layered dimension to the wine. The wine was aged for nine months on the lees in French oak, which contributed to the complexity and texture of the wine.
