2024 Cinsault Rose, Leeuwenkuil Family Vineyards

    £1495

An engaging and elegant dry rosé showing lovely finesse. Enticing aromas of raspberry and pomegranate follow through to the palate layered with ripe watermelon and a tangy cranberry finish.

Leeuwenkuil is situated in the triangle between Malmesbury, Paarl and Durbanville. The Atlantic Ocean lies 20 miles to the west and this has a significant cooling and moderating effect on the Mediterranean climate. The rolling hills average around 140 metres above sea level. However, the superior influence on the wine is from the various soil formations, namely shale, schist, granite and iron stone. These ancient soils vary greatly in the percentage of clay, mineral content and organic matter. The grapes for this rosé are mostly grown in clay rich shale, resulting in a wine with substance and moderate acidity.

The Marras Los Tros Chenin Blanc is made by Martin Lamprecht from grapes sourced from Swartland, a melting pot for hot new talent and South Africa’s leading region for liberal winemaking and experimentation.

This is a gorgeous drinkable pear and stone-fruited wine. The flavours are complemented by crisp freshness and a round mouthfeel with a refreshing finish.   In a recent South African tasting held in our shop, this was one of the wines of the night.

    2020 Piekenierskloof Grenache, Marras

    £1575

The grapes for the Piekenierskloof Grenache are handpicked, destemmed and crushed first thing the next morning to retain freshness. The fruit enjoys a cold soak for three days to aid extraction and is then partially fermented in old oak barrels for 10 months. Ripe cherry and wild strawberry on the nose and palate. This wine is bright and round and beautifully knitted with a fine minerality to the finish.

    2023 Shiraz, Leeuwenkuil Family Vineyards

    £1575

    “The Swartland Fire”

Dark purple with violet glints, this Shiraz bursts with aromas of blackberry, blueberry, and cracked black pepper, accented by hints of olive and fynbos. The palate is bold yet vibrant – ripe black fruit layered with smoky spice, framed by grainy tannins and refreshing acidity. A wine that’s both generous and grounded.

For when: the grill is hot, the table’s full, and the mood is unfiltered joy.
Pairs with: flame-grilled lamb chops, boerewors, or charred aubergine.
If this wine were music, it’d be Afro-jazz, bold, rhythmic, and full of life.

Leeuwenkuil is one of the Swartland’s most dynamic family estates, farming hundreds of hectares of old vines across diverse soils. Their Shiraz captures the region’s signature: sun-drenched ripeness balanced by savoury, peppery depth, always with an unmistakable Swartland energy.

  • <a href="https://wine-republic.co.uk/product/2019-sauvignon-blanc-mulderbosch/">2020 Sauvignon Blanc, Mulderbosch</a>

    2020 Sauvignon Blanc, Mulderbosch

    £1595

Mulderbosch Sauvignon Blanc was one of the vanguards of the South African industry in the early 1990s; it was memorably described by Jancis Robinson as ‘the Cloudy Bay of South Africa’. The playing field has evolved significantly since then, and in order to remain distinctive, Mulderbosch began ageing their Sauvignon Blanc in neutral 500-litre barrels from the 2016 vintage.

This 2020 vintage is unmistakably Sauvignon in character, with striking citrus aromas and a hint of herbal lemon-grass on the nose. Green fig flavours on the palate are lifted by natural acidity and balanced by a firm, chalky texture.

The grapes come from Mulderbosh’s estate vineyard and from the slopes of Simonsberg, the Polkadraai ward and vineyards close to False Bay on the lower slopes of the Helderberg. Some of the vineyards are within two and a half miles of False Bay, where the strong influence of the Atlantic Ocean has a cooling effect during the warmest months of the year, encouraging balancing acidity to the concentrated fruit produced in this warm region.

    2023 Estate SSV, Lomond Wines

    £1595

A refreshing, elegant blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Viognier.  It opens in the glass with aromas of gooseberry and tropical fruit, layered with citrus and hints of spice. Beautifully balanced with full-flavoured passion fruit and citrus notes lifted by a zesty, mouthwatering finish.

Excellent to drink now as the Sauvignon Blanc’s racy acidity is to the fore but after 2 years in bottle the Viognier and Semillon start to emerge with the Viognier noticeable for apricot notes and the Semillon adding richness and texture.

Lomond is situated on The Agulhas Plain near the southernmost tip of Africa at Cape Agulhas – the meeting place of the Indian and Atlantic Oceans – and within sight of the sea.

    2024 Sundance Viognier, Tumbleweed

    £1595

    “The Glow Up”

Glittering pale gold, this Viognier offers aromas of peach, pear, and honeysuckle, lifted by a touch of ginger and fresh herbs. The palate is glossy and generous, stone fruit richness balanced by citrus brightness. The finish glows with freshness and leaves a lingering floral trace.

For when: golden hour refuses to end.
Pairs with: prawn curry, ginger pork, or soft cheeses.
If this wine were a selfie, it’d catch the light just right.

Fruit is picked early in the cool of dawn, with partial barrel fermentation adding texture and shape. The result is a Viognier that’s sunlit and aromatic but still taut and balanced – a Cape take on this famously lush grape.

  • <a href="https://wine-republic.co.uk/product/2018-swartland-rouge-kloof-street/">2020 Swartland Rouge, Kloof Street</a>

    2020 Swartland Rouge, Kloof Street

    £1675

Produced by Chris and Andrea Mullineux, the Kloof Street wines represent balance, freshness and superb value. They act as the perfect starting point for discovering Swartland’s wines. It is immediately evident in the glass that as much care goes into these wines as Mullineux’s Single Terroir Syrahs and Chenin Blancs.

The spicy perfumed nose has undertones of dark fruits. Each variety in the blend adds balance to the wine. Tinta Barocca brings tannin, Cinsault brings perfume, Carignan brings freshness, Grenache brings fruit character, and the Syrah ties it all together.

A blend of eight vineyard parcels, this wine is made from sustainably farmed fruit sourced from different parts of the Swartland. The vines are aged between 12 – 40 years. Two parcels of Syrah and one of Cinsault come from the stony shale and schist-based soils of Kasteelberg, which retain heat well and aid in the ripening of bold fruit. One parcel of dry-land, bush vine Syrah, one of Carignan, one of Grenache and a single parcel of gnarly, old, dry-farmed Tinta Barocca bush vines are all grown on the decomposed granite soil of the Paardeberg. This soil promotes the production of complex wines with lifted acidity. The final parcel is Mourvèdre grown on the rolling, iron-rich soils west of Malmesbury.

2024 Mason Road Chenin Blanc, Brookdale Estate

    £1695

Pale straw with a green glimmer, this Chenin Blanc brims with aromas of green apple, quince, and citrus blossom, lifted by hints of honeysuckle. On the palate it’s crisp and lively – pear, lemon zest, and melon flowing into a mineral backbone. Zesty acidity keeps everything vibrant, finishing clean and refreshing.

For when: you need a mid-week pick-me-up that feels like a treat.
Pairs with: grilled calamari, caprese salad, or fried chicken on a sunny afternoon.
If this wine were a tune, it’d be an upbeat chorus you can’t stop humming.

Brookdale Estate lies in the foothills of the Du Toitskloof mountains in Paarl, where old vines and cooling breezes bring balance and freshness to the Cape’s classic varieties. The Mason Road range is about accessibility and brightness – wines crafted to deliver everyday quality with a splash of personality.

  • <a href="https://wine-republic.co.uk/product/2017-pinot-noir-ernst-gouws-co/">2017 Pinot Noir, Ernst Gouws & Co</a>

2017 Pinot Noir, Ernst Gouws & Co

    £1700

Ernst Gouws, the jovial patriarch of the Gouws family and winemaker extraordinaire, firmly believes in the French philosophy that the quality of the wine is inextricably linked to the origin of the vineyards and its terroir. Grapes are therefore hand-harvested from site-specific vineyards around the town of Stellenbosch, which is world-famous for producing quality, fruit-driven wines.

The grapes for this 2017 Pinot Noir are grown on the West Coast, just three miles from the sea, where the vineyard overlooks the Atlantic Ocean. The revitalising sea-breezes create balancing freshness in the grapes, which is showcased in this beautifully composed Pinot Noir.

The translucent ruby colour of this wine is typical of the variety. Subtle aromas of fresh raspberries, cherries and tilled earth combine with a hint of baking spice. The palate is elegant, with a delicate and silky tannin structure.  The wine is beautifully balanced with lingering flavours of tobacco and wild mushrooms on the finish.

The delicate nature of this wine is a perfect match for smoked trout or salmon. It will also pair well with charcuterie, ham and other cold meats served with patés and terrines.

  • <a href="https://wine-republic.co.uk/product/2022-sauvignon-blanc-baleia-wines/">2022 Sauvignon Blanc, Baleia Wines</a>

    2022 Sauvignon Blanc, Baleia Wines

    £1725

Baleia is a place of whales and wonder, where wines are born from rocky limestone soil in a remote and unspoilt corner of the Cape South Coast. Here vines overcome fierce elements to create fruit with singular character and depth of flavour. Beyond evocative wine, Baleia is also about finding harmony between self, others and nature in pursuit of life’s perfect equilibrium.

This Sauvignon Blanc is lovely and juicy with tropical fruits such as passion fruit and lychee dancing on the palate with saline undertones from the mineral soil in which it is grown.

Making Sauvignon Blanc one is often faced with the temptation of making very upfront and unnuanced wines that lack a sense of place. Baleia has chosen to take the road less travelled by choosing texture and minerality from the site to portray the beauty of the terroir.
