£1895Add to BasketOne of the very few lees- and oak-aged Verdejos from Rueda, Edición Limitada Verdejo 2016 is the result of Ramón Bilbao’s decade-long search to find a white wine with all the elegance and freshness of its Rioja reds.
The search saw winemaker Sara Bañuelos experiment with different vinification methods, from lees-stirring to cold fermentation, and ageing in every size from 225l barriques to 4,100l concrete tanks!
This white is made from 19-year-old vines on the 60-hectare Finca las Amedias vineyard and was aged for eight months on its lees in French and Hungarian oak. Only a limited amount of numbered bottles have been released – just over 24,000.
Greenish-yellow in colour, this medium-intensity wine is clean, fresh, bright, and produces tears on the glass. It has an intense and rich aroma of citrus fruits with balsamic notes like sandalwood and mint, with more subtle aromas of chocolate and baked goods. In the mouth, it is oily, with fresh and creamy acidity. Citric fruits reappear in the finish, combined with spices like white pepper.
‘Whether we make our wines in Rioja or Rueda, we will always look to push boundaries and go beyond the “accepted” ways of doing things,’ said Bodegas Ramón Bilbao’s head winemaker Rodolfo Bastida.

2022 Txakoli, Hiruzta
£1895Add to BasketHiruzta (pronounced “Ir-rosster”) is an estate winery in the northern Basque region of Spain. The grapes are grown in their 11-hectare single vineyard, located at the foothills of Jaizkibel mountain, just 500 metres away from the Cantabric Sea. The salty sea breeze influence is one of the main characteristics that can be appreciated in the Hiruzta Txakoli (pronounced “Chaccoli”). The aim of the winery is to restore the tradition of Txakoli production in Hondarribia after all the grape that Txakoli is made from is called Hondarrabi Zuri, named after the town the Hiruzta is based.
The wine has rich aromas of crisp apples, pear, grapefruit and tropical pineapple are enhanced by a subtle, natural effervescence. Balanced and fresh on the palate, it has the slight characteristic of a pearl wine with well-integrated crisp acidity, hints of citrus and tropical fruits and a long aromatic finish.

After whole bunch pressing the wine ages on its lees for five months in French oak which adds subtle vanilla and toasty notes to the intense tropical pineapple flavours and aromas.

Most people have never heard of Bobal, and yet it is the second most planted red grape variety in Spain, second only to Tempranillo! Traditionally used in bulk wine production it is no finding it feet as a standalone wine and as the muse of exceptional winemakers such as Casa Lo Alto’s Valencian winemaker Víctor Marqués. Using organic, biodynamic and sustainable principles he has crafted this stunning Bobal from three vineyards planted between 1940 and 1965.
Casa Lo Alto Manzán 2017 is a fluid red wine with light herbaceous aromas and Incisive red fruit. On the palate, it is fresh and fruity, with medium acidity and mouthwatering dry tannins. This really is such a pure and joyful wine and deserves your attention!
Interesting facts: The vines are planted bush-style in order to save water and protect them from over-exposure to the sun. In the soil, which is calcareous clayey and poor in organic matter, the use of chemical products is avoided and biodynamic preparations are used. In the winery, the grapes are destemmed but not pressed. Once they arrive, they undergo spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts. After pressing the juice is then decanted into barrels to rest on its lees for approximately 10 months.

This wine represents the perfect blend of the terroir and the cool-climate region, with its warm days and cool nights prolonging the ripening period and encouraging aromatic richness. The Viura grapes come from the sandy soils of the Najerilla, and the limestone soils of the Sonsierra, and are blended with Maturana Blanca from the Iregua Valley, grown in sandy soils. Maturana Blanca is an ancient native variety with small clusters and small, elliptical grapes which produces vibrant, tangy wines characterised by high, natural acidity.
In the glass it has an aromatic and complex bouquet of baked apple, floral and balsamic notes, layered with nutty tones and a hint of minerality. The palate is fresh, rounded and balanced, with lovely texture and finishes with stone fruits and a touch of almond.
Nivarius, meaning ‘snow-drift’, takes its name from the common sight of the snowy blanket which covers the vineyards in winter.

The wine is fermented in modern egg-shaped polypropylene tanks to enable controlled micro-oxygenation. It is then aged on the lees for 3 months before being bottled unoaked.
One of only 2 Spanish regions awarded DOQ status (the other is Rioja), Priorat is known for the quality of its wines from rocky, silica slate (Llicorella) soils. The high diurnal range in Priorat contributes to producing fresh, aromatic wines.

The grapes come from a single vineyard ‘Viñas O Val’ in the DO Bierzo, in the north-western Spanish province of Castilla León. Low yielding 60-year-old vines are grown in clay soils with ‘Coios’, a Spanish term for boulders, which gave this wine its name. These old vines have deep root systems which nourish the vines imparting complex flavours in the resulting wine. Planted at a density of 4,000 vines per hectare, the vines are grown at an altitude of 550 to 590 metres above sea level. The cool nights extends the ripening period, allowing the grapes to develop rich varietal characteristics while retaining balancing acidity. The grapes are manually harvested when they have reached optimum maturity.

The grapes come from 300 carefully selected parcels, situated on the slopes of the Sierra Cantabria, in Rioja Alavesa. The bush vines are planted in limestone soils, resulting in elegant wines that are fresh, precise and age-worthy due to the balancing acidity.
