  Pierre Gimonnet et Fils, Cuis Premier Cru Brut Champagne is produced from Pierre Gimonnet et Fils’ own vines planted on Cuis and Vertus (1er Crus), Cramant, Chouilly and Oger (Grand Crus) using only the Chardonnay grape to produce this excellent Premier Cru Brut Champagne. With some 28 hectares in their areas Pierre Gimonnet et Fils produce only Blanc de Blanc Cuvees – a phenomenon rare in Champagne.

  On the nose, the Chardonnay provides fresh floral and citrus notes. Whilst these notes continue on to the palate, delicious middle weight flavours of stone fruits come forward with brioche and an underlying minerality.   Aromas of ripe pear, peach and honey, with a subtle strawberry nuance in the background. The palate offers very good intensity, with fresh orchard fruit and spicecake flavors picking up weight with air. Closes on a vibrant, stony note, with very good clarity and length.

  2018 Chardonnay ‘G.P.S Series’, Kershaw

  Restraint, minerality, freshness of fruit and a chiselled edge reflect limestone’s soil properties. This 2018 reveals clean, bright aromas of lemon blossom, wet chalk and powdered stones. Penetrating intensity, animated acidity with a rich mid-palate weight; this wine has purity of fruit – orange peel, yellow cling peaches and grapefruit peel – with complexing oatmeal and lemon cream biscuits to crème fraiche textures and a long finish.   Only 2128 bottles were produced.

  The G.P.S. (Grape Positioning System) series is made from exciting small parcels of fruit selected from carefully chosen vineyards outside the Elgin Valley. The Chardonnay grapes come from a small parcel of vines which are grown as a single vineyard block in Lower Duivenhoks River district, in the Western Cape. The pure limestone soil is something of a rarity in the Western Cape; it is a soil in which Chardonnay flourishes and produces elegant, fresh wines. The Dijon clone CY95 vines thrive in this warm Mediterranean climate, which is tempered by the Atlantic Ocean and the nearby Duivenhoks River. The wide diurnal temperature ranges create a long hang time during which the grape cluster stays connected to its roots for longer, developing complex characteristics and achieving physiological ripeness more gradually, balanced by natural acidity.

  2020 ‘The Trouble with Dreams’ Brut, Sugrue South Downs

  The Trouble with Dreams is a classic blend of barrel-fermented Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, boasting great purity and elegance, with lemon and apple aromas leading to a palate of delicate stone fruit and refreshingly crisp acidity. This is long, complex and absolutely delicious.

  A portion of the fruit for this vintage was sourced from the Storrington Priory Vineyard. The majority of grapes came from the exceptional Mount Harry Vineyard near Lewes, in East Sussex. Both of the vineyards are located in Sussex, sitting above the 50th parallel and are influenced by a cool coastal climate. The vineyards have east and southeasterly aspects respectively, encouraging the maximum exposure to the sun, assisting ripening in this capricious climate. The soils are dominated by South Downs chalk, which provides superior drainage for the vines, as well as imparting great elegance and finesse to the wines.

  The 2022 vintage marks only the third time Ataraxia has produced a fully skin-fermented Chardonnay, drawing on millennia-old winemaking traditions. This limited bottling pushes boundaries while honouring heritage, using an ancient technique to deepen the narrative of South African Chardonnay. The result is a rare and distinctive wine that invites curiosity and rewards attention, offering an authentic expression of terroir and time.

  In the glass, it opens with aromas of orange peel, chamomile, toasted almond, and dried apricot, layered with earthy undertones and subtle spice. On the palate, the wine is structured yet fluid, with firm tannins and a mouth-coating richness that gives way to notes of preserved lemon, white peach, ginger, and a gentle saline minerality. The extended skin contact imparts both grip and intrigue, while the cool-climate acidity of Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge keeps the wine vibrant and precise through a lingering, savoury finish.

  An exceptional Chardonnay from the amazing cool-climate region of Elgin.  Restrained, mineral style focussed on elegance with a white fruit character, some oatmeal and some complexity gained from percipient applied wood.  Only 15982 bottles and 70 Magnums.

  The grapes come from eight to 10 small parcels of vineyards in several locations in the Elgin Valley. Elgin is the coolest wine region in South Africa and is situated on an inland, hexagonal-shaped plateau, at an altitude of 300 metres. The region is surrounded by mountains and lies just over six miles from the Atlantic Ocean, which brings occasional sea-borne mists. February is the hottest month of the year, with daytime temperatures peaking at 23°C and night-time temperatures dipping to 14°C. The benefit of this cooler climate is that the grape cluster stays connected to its roots for longer, so it develops complex characteristics and achieves physiological ripeness more gradually, resulting in lower sugar levels and consequently lower alcohol levels.

  A stunning example of a restrained, cool-climate Chardonnay. Intense citrus aromas and classic soft fruits, jasmine and walnut are layered with honey and vanilla notes.  The palate is beautifully balanced with refreshing, crisp acidity and a distinct minerality.   Having pioneered a new extreme cool climate region in South Africa, Samantha chose to release an Estate Reserve range to illustrate what the vineyards are capable of. Fermented in 20% new wood, it is taut and tangy, with delicious aromas of mandarin and lemongrass, subtle spices, an impressive structure, stunning depth and exceptional minerality. 

  This “Vin de Terroir” was made from Ataraxia’s first vintage of organic grapes grown on its own vineyards. He presents a journey of conversion to organic principles that began five years ago. Spontaneous and complete barrel fermentation without additives, followed by maturation in specially selected French oak barrels, sourced exclusively from Burgundian coopers, were part of a gentle and minimalist winemaking approach without interfering with the natural vinification processes.
