2020 M3 Chardonnay, Shaw & Smith – Magnum
£7900Add to BasketA Magnum of the iconic M3 Chardonnay from a high quality, low yielding vintage. This wine opens with intense aromas of white flowers, nectarine and citrus. Aiming for elegance, restraint and the ability to age, the acidity is bright and there is generosity of flavour.
Fruit was predominantly sourced from the Shaw + Smith vineyard at Lenswood, which was planted in 1999 and purchased by Martin and Michael in 2012. Undulating with east and west-facing aspects at 455 – 500 metres above sea level, the soils are brown loams over clay with broken shale on the ridges. Low yields were achieved by aggressive pruning and pre-harvest bunch thinning. All fruit was hand-picked to avoid any fruit damage.

£7995Add to BasketThis outstanding Chardonnay from Richard Kershaw MW is sourced from a parcel in the western part of Elgin, the CY96 in the wines name is in reference to a clone of the Chardonnay grape that is known for its excellent quality, creating wines that are nervous, aromatic, elegant and crisp with slightly lower alcohol and finely balanced, the fruit profile being subtle with hints of citrus/orange peel and peach blossom and with time, some nutty elements. The Cartref soils, a mixture of decomposed granite, pebbles and quartz, add delicacy and heighten the fruit intensity.

2020 shows excellent concentration and very clean fruit, which makes for age-worthy Chardonnay with high acidity and ripe fruit characteristics.
The grapes come from three different vineyards within the Russian River Valley AVA, but predominantly from Bush Vineyard, near Dutton Ranch where the clones are mainly Old Wente and Hyde. Renowned as being one of California’s coolest and foggiest AVAs, the microclimate creates the perfect conditions for producing highly acclaimed Chardonnay, with warm days and cool nights. The warm climate is tempered by the cool, coastal breezes and the trademark fog that lingers over the vineyards, brings moisture and has a cooling effect on the vines. The result is a long hang-time, during which the vines slowly build aromatic complexity, concentrated flavours, superbly balanced by natural, crisp freshness.

It is made in only exceptional years and has natural residual sugar (over 30g) which harmonises perfectly with natural acidity.
In the glass, this wine exhibits aromas of dried apricot, burnt caramel and honey with banana and a touch of smoke. Beautiful subdued sweetness with underlying acidity. Very intense and concentrated in the mouth. The palate includes orange peel with waves and waves of intense, tautly precise flavour framed by good acidity. Very impressive finesse and length.

Thanks to Georges, the abandoned, steep slopes here were given new life in the 1960s. In fact, this determined man had the genius intuition to cultivate vines on the “chaillées”, or terraces, aptly known as the “chaillées de l’Enfer” (terraces from hell)!
On the nose, the 2017 reveals exquisite floral notes, like old rose and peony, as well as a fruity side. 2019 stands out as one of the more exceptional vintages in recent memory. Cooler temperatures and stable weather throughout the growing season allowed for slow maturation of flavours without any heat events spiking sugar accumulation in the berries. Although 2019 also saw the devastating Kincade fire in Sonoma County, the fruit was harvested by then, so the smoke did not affect the grapes.
