2022 Muscadet Gras Moutons, Domaine la Haute Févrie

    £1950

This is a staff and customer favourite at Wine Republic.   Complex and full of texture, it opens in the glass with aromas of lemon and grapefruit which give way to delicious notes of olive brine, smoke and biscuit.   The palate is complex with an exquisite tangy fresh acidity and a beautiful minerality.

Domaine la Haut Fevrie is one of the leading producers in Muscadet Sever et Maine.  Melon de Bourgogne is a grape that expresses the nuances of the individual vineyards and Gras Moutons is one of these individual vineyard sites.

“I look to bottle up a pure expression of the marriage between vine, soil and the elements of geography and weather I have to work with. The region of Muscadet has its challenges but that only inspires me to make the very best wines I can, in a natural and environmentally friendly way.” – Sebastien Branger, Winemaker.

    2019 Pinot Noir, Old Stage

    £1950

A balanced and graceful Pinot Noir with aromas of strawberry, raspberry and rhubarb and a touch of sage. Beautifully integrated oak supports the pure fruit through to a silky finish.

The fruit comes from two distinct Pinot Noir vineyards: Danny’s Vineyard and Grava, two of the most northerly plantings in Monterey County. The vineyards nestle up to the Gabilan Mountain Range on the eastern side of the Salinas Valley; approximately 10 miles directly across from the Santa Lucia Highlands. The marine influence of the nearby Monterey Bay and the morning fog which clears for the afternoon sun, results in a cool mesoclimate and a long hang-time for the fruit. The grapes reflect the cool climate character, with complex aromatics and flavours and natural balancing acidity.

    2020 Cabernet Sauvignon, Tahbilk

    £1950

In the glass, this wine offers up red to black currant scents infused with black olive and dried herbs followed by some earthy tobacco and stalky cedar notes. Medium-bodied the palate has an even spread of blackcurrant and liquorice fruit underscored by toasty cedar, earth, subtle black olive and spicy dried herbs. Fine-grained tannins with a lingering conclusion. Matured in large and small oak barrels

Tahbilk’s vineyards are grouped along the banks of the Goulburn River, a branch of it which flows through the estate. The vines are grown at around 134 metres elevation of gently undulating and flat terrain. The soils are sandy loam with ferric oxide content, which varies from very fine sand near the anabranch to denser loams on the plains. Tahbilk has Shiraz vineyards dating back from the 1860s to the 1990s. The oldest surviving block is the ‘1860 block’; planted on its own roots in sandy soils, which has made it impossible for phylloxera to colonise the vine roots.

2022 Bacchus Single Estate, New Hall Wine Estate

    £1950

A rich and flavoursome quintessentially English Bacchus, displaying complex and aromatic notes of grapefruit, pear, peach, lime layered with herbaceous overtones of nettle and cut grass.

The Bacchus vines were planted between 1976 and 2018, on well-sheltered, southern facing slopes of the Crouch Valley. The big skies, low rainfall, coastal breezes and the influence of the Blackwater and Crouch Rivers come together to offer ideal climatic conditions. The area is protected from frosts which is beneficial in the capricious English climate. The vineyard is made up of London clay soils, from the Tertiary age, with chalk concealed below the clay deposits. The vines thrive in these warm soils; the clay offers high retention of nitrogen and the nutrient uptake from the clay soils is evident. The soils also provide good balance to the vigour of the vines. Over the years, this site has proven itself to be an ideal place for the growing of vines in England, producing above average crops of high quality grapes.

    2022 Assyrtiko, Jim Barry

Original price was: £2495.Current price is: £1995. 20% saving

This wine is a pale straw colour in the glass. Opens with lifted notes of rose water florals and pear. A generous palate packed with lemon butter and pear fruit. The palate has depth, with some chalky texture anchoring the generous and rich fruit and a drawn-out, refreshing citrus finish. The wine has been praised for its similarity to its Greek counterpart and has great natural acidity with flavours of pear, apricot and apple.

The Assyrtiko vines are from clones that Peter Barry originally imported from Gaia’s vineyard, Santorini. They were first planted in 2012 in the Lodge Hill vineyard, on the eastern ranges of Clare, where the soils are brown loam overlaying a layer of clay and slate bedrock. Subsequently, blocks have been planted at the Florita vineyard in Watervale in the western ranges of the Clare Valley on terra rossa soils. The Lodge Hill block produces wines which are tight and have excellent persistence of flavour, while the vines planted on terra rossa soils are more generous and fuller flavoured. All the vines in the Assyrtiko blocks are planted in shallow soils over the bedrock, which makes them struggle just a little, producing intensely flavoured wines.

Interesting facts: The vines are planted bush-style in order to save water and protect them from over-exposure to the sun. In the soil, which is calcareous clayey and poor in organic matter, the use of chemical products is avoided and biodynamic preparations are used.   In the winery, the grapes are destemmed but not pressed. Once they arrive, they undergo spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts. After pressing the juice is then decanted into barrels to rest on its lees for approximately 10 months.

Due to the altitude of the vineyards, Kyperounda invariably harvests approximately one month later than vineyards at half their elevation and the long hang time results in concentrated flavours in the fruit, while preserving refreshing acidity.

In the glass, it has delicious aromas of citrus fruits, candied lime, lychee and a touch of spice and vanilla. 2023 Chianti Classico ‘San Jacopo’, Castello Vicchiomaggio

    £1995

The wines of Castello Vicchiomaggio truly show off the Sangiovese grape at its best. Vicchiomaggio is consistently classified amongst Italy’s top estates and winemaker John Matta has been named IWSC Italian Winemaker of the Year four times in the last 14 years.

The 2023 Chianti Classico ‘San Jacopo’ is named after an antique farmhouse located on the wine estate.   It is a lovely expression of Chianti, with red cherry and cranberry fruits, the palate has good substance and a lingering, rounded finish.

The vineyards are located in the heart of the Chianti Classico region and sit at an altitude of 255 to 265 metres above sea level. The Chianti Classico area is characterised by a Mediterranean climate and the soil, which is called “Galestro”, is rich in clay and large stones. The soils in this vineyard are made up of a high proportion of heavy clay- approximately 30%- which is renowned for its cooling properties and water retention for the vine, as well as for producing bold wines from the Sangiovese grape. Planted at a density of 5,600 vines per hectare, the vines are pruned according to the Single Guyot method which ensures low yields of approximately 52 hectolitres per hectare. Particular attention is paid to the direction in which the vines are planted; they are all south-facing, ensuring maximum exposure to the sun throughout the day.
