  The indigenous variety of Thrapshathiri (pronounced Thrap-sah-THEE-ree) is grown in the Dafnes region, in vineyards located at an altitude of 400 to 500 metres above sea level. At this elevation, the cool Aegean summer breezes refresh the vines during the summer, when temperatures can reach 35°C. The cooler nights can drop to 15°C and this diurnal temperature difference retains natural acidity in the grapes, balancing this rich and intensely aromatic variety.

  Winemaker David Depuydt makes Chablis as it should be; mineral, fresh and light but with interest and texture.   The area of Lussac is an up and coming satellite appellation of the renowned Saint Emilion region on the the Right Bank of Bordeaux. There is no doubt that one of Lussac’s most prized properties is Château Lucas, owned by the Vauthier family of Château Ausone fame. From just 18 hectares of vines, three cuvée are produced. The top wine, aptly called Château Lucas, is produced from a 12-hectare vineyard, comprising equal parts Merlot and Cabernet Franc. While so much of the Right Bank focuses on Merlot, the high percentage of Cabernet Franc brings a polished lift to the cuvée, vintage in and vintage out.

  In the glass it opens with aromatics of raspberry and blackcurrant interlaced with plum and vanilla notes.  The palate is round and balanced with flavours of earthy spices, tobacco and blackcurrants that lead into a sustained finish.

  This 2017 Shiraz comes from a single-vineyard sourced from the Florita vineyard in Watervale.  The Shiraz block is planted on a gentle northwest facing slope that takes full advantage of Clare Valley climate.

  It is an opulent wine with expressive aromas of rich, bright red fruits that are supported by classic Clare Valley spice. Beautifully structured with fine savoury tannins and terrific length of vibrant fruit on the palate.  This is not your typical Clare Valley Shiraz!   The opulent nature of the wine could be due to winemaking that saw one-third of the grapes being co-fermented with 15% of whole bunch fruit to impart complexity and an aromatic lift to the wine.   The wine then went through malolactic fermentation (a process where tart malic acid in wine converts to softer, creamier lactic acid) before being transferred to oak barrels for 12 months of ageing.

  A terrific mouthful of wine!

  This knockout wild Ferment Sauvignon Blanc from Harry Hartman Wines is made from fruit picked in the premium regions of Elgin and Bot River.  Elgin fruit has a higher level of acidity adding to the more citrus notes and making the wine more linear. Botrivier fruit is more rounded, with bigger tropical notes.

  In the glass, the wine paints a picture of a basket filled with freshly picked kiwi and yellow plums. The fruit is clean and welcoming, backed with a perpetual herbaceous note that blows off as the wine evolves in your glass, leaving hints of spice and a creamy note of old-fashioned lemon candy.   The grapes were sourced from small plots within selected vineyards in the Leyda Valley, 14 kilometres from the Pacific Ocean, where the vines are cooled by the South Pacific breezes and the morning coastal summer fog. Located to the west of the coastal mountain range, the Leyda Valley’s finely textured soils are developed from granite rock on the coastal batholith formed 200 million years ago during the Jurassic period.
