  • 2021 Chardonnay, BrokenwoodWhite Wine

    2021 Chardonnay, Brokenwood

    £2495

Established in 1970 Brokenwood Wines is one of Australia’s most reputable premium wine labels and a must-visit in the Hunter Valley. Consistently listed as a 5 star winery, Brokenwood is home to the famous Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz, the highly acclaimed ILR Reserve Semillon, and the popular Cricket Pitch Range.

Brokenwood, along with a large number of Chardonnay producers, are harvesting much earlier than 10 years ago. This is partly due to a lot of vineyards reaching maturity, and therefore having great fruit flavour and concentration at lower sugar levels. Additionally, consumers are demanding more finely structured Chardonnay, meaning lower alcohols and less oak.

Approximately two-thirds from Beechworth the balance being from a combination of the Yarra Valley, Tumbarumba and the Hunter Valley.

Brilliant very pale straw almost water like core with greenish tinged edges. Aromas of white peach and dried honey mix with some biscuity oak notes, cashew and delicate citrusy nougat. Light to mid weight with good focus and a refined feel, the palate is detailed with nectarine and white peach fruits which meld into a back drop of subtle dried honey, nougat, biscuity oak and infusions of gun flint. Good intensity finishing with a burst of fresh acidity. Elegant medium to long aftertaste.

    £2495

The Domaine Chignard Fleurie ‘Les Moriers’ is crafted from Gamay vines with an average age of 65+ years that are south facing to maximise their exposure to the sun and aid ripening. • 2017 Semillon, Geyer Wine CoWhite Wine

    2017 Semillon, Geyer Wine Co

    £2500

Old vine Semillon – what an absolute joy and example of the amazing heritage of Australia. Whilst much of the Barossa is ripping out old vines to replace with money-making, high yielding Shiraz, Dave Geyer is working with some of the great farmers of the area, devoted to preserving the old vines and varieties of the area. As Dave says, “once a century-old vine is gone, several generations must wait to see what it could produce again. This instant gratification is one of the downfalls of the industry. We work closely together to preserve this part of our history to ensure these vines stand the test of time and to produce some epic wines! “

Punchy fruit-driven nose, with pink grapefruit, lemon balm and moringa flowers. Textured, nutty palate with flavours of dried mango, tangerine, lemon sherberts and a firm, grippy finish. The end of the bottle might be a little cloudier, but don’t worry, it’s just due to the choice of producing wine without filtration or fining.

The Geyer Semillon is a blend of fruit from three different vineyards, each vinified in a way to best represent the site. Component 1 and 2 are sourced from two 90-100-year-old sites in the Barossa Valley, one which goes straight to stainless steel to best retain its vivid, fruit aromas, whilst the other, with more reductive, smokey aromas goes to old oak. The third site is a younger vineyard in the Eden Valley – and this portion spends two weeks on skins, with 50% whole bunches. All components were blended upon completion of fermentation and aged in a 1950’s fortified wine foudre for six months. This old wood infused with sherry and flor characters really twisted the Semillon in an amazing Jura-esque way – crack a bottle and see! Bottled without any addition of sulphur or fining/filtration.

  • Offer 2018 Shiraz, Tahbilk *Magnum*Red Wine

    2018 Shiraz, Tahbilk *Magnum*

    £2500 38% saving

Tahbilk Shiraz is sourced from nearly 30 hectares of vines planted at various times from the 1930s through the early 2000s. Made using traditional Tahbilk techniques; fermentation takes place in 150 + year old open vats, before maturation in French and American oak for 18 months before bottling. The resultant releases are noted as being fruit-driven wines of much flavour and substance, proven over the years to develop added character when cellared. Varietally expressive with ample plum and blackberry fruits, there is warm earth and spicy savouriness that immediately appeals with a backbone of fine, opulent tannins and a rich, persistent finish.

Tahbilk’s vineyards are grouped along the banks of the Goulburn River, a branch of it which flows through the estate. The vines are grown at around 134 metres elevation of gently undulating and flat terrain. The soils are sandy loam with ferric oxide content, which vary from very fine sand near the anabranch to denser loams on the plains. Tahbilk has Shiraz vineyards dating back from the 1860s to the 1990s. The oldest surviving block is the ‘1860 block’; planted on its own roots in sandy soils, which has made it impossible for phylloxera to colonise the vine roots.
