  • 2016 Tinta Barocca, Momento Red Wine

    2016 Tinta Barocca, Momento

    £2750

Cherries, cassis, roses and cinnamon joined by porcini mushroom and soy make this an alluring and complex nose added to by the ripe phenolic grip and textured coating palate. The balance between lifted and bright primary red fruit notes and that savoury gravitas mimics high-end Pinot Noir. Tightly wound and complex, this wine can age beyond 2025.

This wine is a tribute to all old vine Tinta Baroccas of South Africa, which for a long time have supported some beautifully fine ‘red blends’ but seldom got the recognition they deserve. A blend of three special vineyards all aged over 40 years – of origin Bot River, Stellenbosch and Swartland – grown on a soil combination of Bokkeveld shale, decomposed granite and clay.

  • 2014 ‘Cariñena’ Huaso de Sauzal, Bodegas El Viejo Almacén de Sauzal Red Wine

2014 ‘Cariñena’ Huaso de Sauzal, Bodegas El Viejo Almacén de Sauzal

    £2750

Renan Cancino is one of Chile’s most sought-after viticulturists, and while he has made his name for tending vines, his wine production under the Huaso de Sauza brand is also turning heads. Cancino is a natural winemaker whose philosophy is making wines how they were always made historically in Chile – naked. Everything is done the traditional way here: vines are worked by hand, the vineyards are worked by draft horse, and there has never been any use of irrigation or chemicals.

Cariñena is made from Carignan grafted onto free-standing País rootstock on granitic soils in the town of Sauzal.  Cariñena is a rustic wine with expressive aromas of violet, rose petal, oak, smoke and mushroom.  The palate is brimming with flavours of cherry, strawberry, raspberry, liquorice and anise.   The finish is mouthwatering, like a mountain breeze!

“I have never seen such an artisanal and true to tradition way of making wines. The nose is a clean, focused and pure expression of the grape, with the violets and earthy, slightly rustic aromas. No sulfur is ever used at the winery, yet the wines are so clean and pure that it’s hard to believe. The palate is medium-bodied with some earthy, slightly grainy tannins and with great acidity. This is more serious, closed than the Garnacha, but at a similar, very high-quality level. Simply unbelievable. 5,000 bottles produced.”  93 Luis Gutierrez – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

  • 2016 Directors`Cut Cabernet Sauvignon, Heartland Wines Red Wine

2016 Directors`Cut Cabernet Sauvignon, Heartland Wines

    £2750

Made by Ben Glaetzer from 70+ year old vines this wine is Heartland’s most powerful expression of Langhorne Creek’s classic varietals. Only the best fruit makes the Directors’ Cut.

The 2016 vintage of Directors’ Cut Cabernet Sauvignon gives a very clear understanding of the power and finesse of Langhorne Creek. Here the fruit of old vines are showcased by Ben Glaetzer’s refined winemaking and matured in the finest oak to bring the intensity of the Cabernet Sauvignon to the forefront. Look for delicate floral and herbal notes to act as a counterpoint to the raw majesty of the fruit.

Ben reckons this might be the finest vintage he has ever seen from Langhorne Creek. Only time will tell. Harvest was more generous than the previous few years, with above-average quantity and quality. Total degree days were up from the last three years, with wonderful ripeness levels recorded leading to amazing fruit intensity. This may supersede the 2012 vintage for overall quality and has led to a very happy winemaker.

2018 Godello ‘Mais Ala’, Xosé Lois Sebio

    £2795

Made from 100% Godello, this refreshing white combines delicate floral notes with fresh fruit, spice and mineral tones. Harmoniously balanced with a textured palate through to a long and elegant finish.

The grapes for Mais Ala come from 30-year-old vines, grown in a single vineyard named ‘A Barca en a Falcoeira’. The vineyard is set on the hillside at an altitude of 600 to 650 metres above sea level, where cooler nights give diurnal temperature differences encouraging the natural acidity to remain in the grapes resulting in a fresh style of wine. The vines are planted at a density of 4,000 vines per hectare and are nourished by granitic soils; specifically the local decomposed granitic-sandy soil known as ‘Xabre’. Manual harvest takes place at optimal maturity.

  • 2017 ‘Superheroe’, Xosé Lois Sebio Red Wine

    2017 ‘Superheroe’, Xosé Lois Sebio

    £2795

The ‘Superheroe’ from Xosé Lois Sebio is a layered fragrant blend highlighting notes of violet, blackberry, redcurrant and plums, combined with subtle hints of black pepper and mineral tones. Elegant and expansive on the palate, offering concentrated fruit, fine tannins with a balancing freshness. The rich yet vibrant finish is wonderfully intense and long.

This wine is from the DO Ribeiro, which means ‘River Bank’ in Galician, as it is located along the Miño river and its tributaries, in Galicia, North West Spain. A blend of indigenous varieties, the vines range from 40 to 70 years old. These vines are low yielding and produce small, concentrated, flavoursome berries. Planted at an altitude of 150 to 350 metres above sea-level, the vines are free-standing and trained with a stake in the traditional manner, at a density of 1.25 x 1.25 metres. The soils are clay with schist, the latter imparting mineral tones to the wine. The 35% of ‘other grapes’ in the blend is a field blend of Ferrol, Souson, Brancellao, Bastardo, Caiño Longo, Caiño da Terra, Carabuñeira and Tinta Marela. The grapes are grown mixed together in the same parcel which was planted between 70 to 90 years ago in the traditional manner at the time. The grapes are manually harvested simultaneously with each variety offering a unique characteristic to the blend.

The Sancerre appellation in Central France surrounds the eponymous town, which sits atop a hill overlooking the River Loire. The grapes for this cuvée are grown in vineyards which are located on these hilly slopes and are planted across the three main soil types of Sancerre. Les Caillottes, which is made up of a high proportion of stony fragments of coarse Kimmeridgian limestone upon a clay subsoil and the wines from these soils impart aromatic structure and freshness; Les Terres Blanches which are made up of Kimmeridgian marl and is extremely rich in fossilised shellfish and has the distinctive characteristic of turning white when it dries, hence its local name, which translates as ‘white earth’. 2023 Pouilly-Fumé, J. de Villebois

    £2795

The subtle combination of smoky and ripe fruit aromas preludes a palate of candied pineapple, peach and mango flavours. Elegant and fresh, with the characteristic smoky note of a great Pouilly Fumé.

Pouilly-Fumé is the Sauvignon Blanc appellation located on the Right Bank of the Loire River. The appellation was created in 1937 originally as Blanc Fumé de Pouilly. Pouilly- Fumé takes its name from Pouilly-sur-Loire, the village from which the wines originate; while ‘Fume’ refers to Blanc Fumé, the local synonym for Sauvignon Blanc. Fumé translates as ‘smoky’, which denotes the struck gunflint notes that characterise the wines. The Sauvignon Blanc grapes that produced this cuvée are grown on the main Pouilly Fumé terroirs of Villiers and Barrois, where the soils are made up of limestone, marls with oyster shells and clayey-flint ‘Silex’ soils. This is fabulous cool climate shiraz, that is achingly drinkable and great value for money.   The Peninsula label represents the first tier in the Paringa Estate range and are sourced from the Estate managed vineyards in Red Hill, and from a few other carefully selected vineyards around the Peninsula. These wines are an exceptional expression of the Mornington Peninsula style, with an emphasis on lively fruit.
