  Sauvignon is the most popular white wine in the UK and for good reason, it’s easy to drink and you know what you are getting.

  But there is another more adventurous side to Sauvignon Blanc, the one where winemakers push the envelope in terms of vineyard locations, the use of oak and wild yeasts. These are the ones we focus on with this selection.

  Here’s what’s in the case:

  2021 Outer Limits Sauvignon Blanc, Montes, Aconcagua Valley, Chile

  The Outer Limits wines were born out of Aurelio Montes’ desire to push Chilean viticulture in a new direction. The 45 hectare Zapallar Vineyard in the Aconcagua Valley was Montes’ first venture into the ‘outer limits’. Due to the balance and concentration in the Outer Limits wines, they can be enjoyed now or allowed to age for a few years, rewarding with a wonderfully complex bouquet.

  2020 ‘Summer’ Wild Ferment Sauvignon Blanc, Harry Hartman, Western Cape, South Africa

  his knockout wild Ferment Sauvignon Blanc from Harry Hartman Wines is made from fruit picked in the premium regions of Elgin and Bot River. Elgin fruit has a higher level of acidity adding to the more citrus notes and making the wine more linear. Botrivier fruit is more rounded, with bigger tropical notes.

  2019 Taihoa Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc, Astrolabe, Marlborough, New Zealand

  This is a unique New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, the fruit for this wine is grown by Paddy and Anna Trolove at Taihoa Vineyard on Marlborough’s southern Kēkerengū coast. It is an outlier, both geographically and in a winemaking sense, to the typical sauvignon blanc wines of Marlborough; it is all about complexity, texture and age-worthiness.

  2019 Sancerre Cuvee Silex, Domaine Serge Laloue, Loire, France

  Serge Laloue has always been one of our favourite winemakers in the Loire, making incredible Sancerre. This we think is their finest Cuvee, crafted by Franck Laloue the Sancerre Silex has intense aromas of smoky graphite with mineral notes of oyster shell that are complemented by zesty orange peel and Mirabelle plum. This fresh, supple cuvée delivers concentrated citrus flavours through to a bright and uplifting mineral finish.

  2023 Puligny-Montrachet, Ropiteau Frères

  Ropiteau Frères has been a standard-bearer in Meursault and Côte de Beaune since 1848, when Jean Ropiteau capitalised on the new railway to promote Burgundy wines across France. Over generations, the house has collected prime parcels, including key holdings within Puligny‑Montrachet, becoming recognised for its expressive, terroir-driven whites.

  The 2023 Puligny‑Montrachet presents a bright, citrus-forward bouquet of lemon and sesame blossom, layered with delicate vanilla toast from just 20% new French oak.  On the palate, it is fresh and elegantly proportioned, with invigorating acidity and a minerally spine. Flavours of white peach and apricot glide across a creamy texture, finishing with a discreet woodiness and lingering charm.

  Paringa’s and arguably Australias top Pinot Noir – made from barrels which were selected as clearly superior at the time of blending and bottling. The wine has rich powerful aromas of spice and dark cherry, combined with charry oak, secondary barrel-ferment mocha/coffee characters that will integrate further to become more Burgundian like with bottle age. On the palate the wine has rich ripe fruit, firm fine-grained tannins helping provide excellent texture and length.

  This outstanding aged Shiraz from Hobbs is made using the Appassimento style and matured for approximately 24 months in French oak.

  Appassimento wines are produced through a process of partially rack-drying grapes to increase concentration of both natural grape flavours and sugars.  The result is a wine of atypical power, concentration and alcohol content with an ability to benefit from long periods of maturation.

  Named in honour of a very fond memory from early in Greg and Allison’s relationship – a skiing instructor who had a hard time pronouncing ‘Gregory’.

  Aromas of citrus, melon and honeysuckle complement hints of white fig, gardenia and toasted hazelnuts on a background of mild toasted oak that adds supportive warmth and richness. A silky palate with a rich texture surrounds a sweet core of melon and citrus, with notes of white floral and toasted vanilla and spice, through to a long bright finish.

  Far Niente Chardonnay is a blend of superlative Napa Valley vineyards, many of which are located in a little-known area called Coombsville, a cool growing region nestled in the rolling countryside and protected by the hills east of the city of Napa. Coombsville offers the characteristic climate of Carneros, with less wind, along with deeper, well-drained gravelly loam and volcanic ash soils. The combination of these vineyards results in subtle, tropical flavours, complex aromas and rich texture.

  The Seghesio family-owned winery started in the year 1895 when Edoardo Seghesio, an Italian immigrant and winemaker, planted the first Zinfandel vineyard in the Alexander Valley located in Sonoma County.

  In the glass this 21 year old Zinfandel has lost none of its sleek smoothness, bursting with black cherry and raspberry aromas with a core of flavours that includes black cherry, cassis, cocoa, coffee, blackberry, spice and anise. Lush, harmonious, and penetrating.

  This beautiful Marsanne from Domaine Ferraton is perfectly mature and drinking fabulously.   Les Miaux Blanc: 100% Marsanne from soils made up of pebbles. This wine is aged on the fine lees for 10 to 12 months to add body and complexity. The nose is redolent of quince, pear and honied notes, while the palate is richer, with apricots and peaches the dominant flavours. This wine should be showing its full peacock’s tail of aromas and flavours.

  Ed Durell planted the first vines in the rock-strewn, windy hills in 1979. Today, Durell Vineyard spans three AVAs: Sonoma Valley, Sonoma Coast and Carneros. The block TOR sources from lies in the famed Sand Hill section of the vineyard, which overlooks the Sonoma Valley. This 2014 Durell Chardonnay ranks among the best they have ever produced. “This has the classic seamless, almost oily palate weight and texture to it that the best Durells have but with a thread of focus that helps to pull the intensity of the palate together. This shows mandarin oranges, stone fruits and an almost cut wet grass note to it.

  A blend of over 100 Crus, this cuvée is a true voyage of the senses across the terroir of Champagne, from the Marne Valley to south of the Aisne. The composition was completed with 35% reserve wines in order to preserve the consistency of the Champagne Collet house style, year after year. This cuvée reached full maturity after a minimum of three years of bottle ageing in the historic, limestone cellars in Ay, which are centuries old.

Flavours of almond pastry, subtle brioche, and an undercurrent of wet stone lead to a long, clean, and elegant finish. Structured yet expressive, this village-level wine delivers excellent ageing potential.

  This Chassagne Montrachet is a blend of three different climats within the appellation, each imparting subtle nuances to the wine in terms of minerality, acidity and body, resulting in complexity and balance. The old vines are grown in complex, stony clay and limestone soils and are densely planted.

  Kaiyō Whisky is a distinctive Japanese whisky house known for its rare use of Mizunara oak and its pioneering sea-maturation technique. Under the guidance of Master Blender Jeffrey Karlovitch, a Keeper of the Quaich and one of the whisky world’s most refined palates, Kaiyō crafts small batches of whisky aged in handmade Mizunara casks, some of the most precious and difficult-to-work-with barrels in the world. Once matured on land, the casks embark on a voyage at sea, where the dynamic conditions of movement, temperature fluctuations, and air pressure variations coax even greater complexity from the oak. The result is a whisky unlike any other, rich, layered, and deeply expressive of both wood and wave.

  Kaiyō “The Kuri” is one of the most innovative expressions in the Kaiyō Wood Library Series, finished in Japanese chestnut (kuri) wood casks, a bold, creative twist that adds richness, spice, and creamy sweetness to the distillery’s already elegant house style. Bottled at 46% ABV and non-chill filtered, it’s a beautifully textured whisky that showcases Kaiyō’s dedication to craftsmanship and experimentation.

  In the glass, it glows golden amber and opens with an inviting bouquet of toffee, roasted chestnut, cinnamon bark, and orange marmalade, backed by gentle hints of vanilla bean, coconut, and sandalwood from the Mizunara oak. The palate is rounded and luxurious, with layers of hazelnut, dried apricot, maple sugar, and warm baking spice, unfolding over a supple, medium-bodied structure. The chestnut cask influence adds a creamy, nutty richness that plays perfectly against Mizunara’s floral lift and exotic spice. The finish is long and balanced, leaving a trail of caramelised nuts, honeyed malt, and a touch of oak-char minerality.
